If deviating from the optimal operation conditions, flow separation will occur on the blade of the runner in a low specific speed turbine. At this time, the turbulent flow of flow field in the blade duct will be in a strong non-equilibrium state, and thus the blade duct vortexes will be generated. To further study the mechanism of blade duct vortexes and to control the generation of these vortexes, Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) model was used to numerically simulate and calculate the internal flow in the low specific speed turbine runner under low load conditions. The blade duct vortexes in the turbine runner were accurately predicted. The effect of short blade in eliminating and reducing the vortexes in the low specific speed turbine runner was analyzed and compared.

The Relationship

Horizontal axis double-runner Francis turbines have great advantages in the development of small hydropower plants, but the arrangement of double runners aggravates the complexity of the water flow between runners, and the mutual influence of the two runners cannot be ignored. In order to explore the relationship between the performance and the internal flow field and investigate the pressure pulsation characteristics of the double-runner Francis turbine, the steady and unsteady numerical analysis of the full flow channel of a prototype turbine was carried out based on the Realizable k-epsilon model and the polyhedral mesh method. The results show that the relationship between the average efficiency of the two runners and the flow difference between the runners is negatively correlated. As the flow rate difference between the runners on both sides increases, the average efficiency of the runners decreases. The draft tube flow of a horizontal-axis turbine has a profound effect on the flow field characteristics in the runner. When the working conditions change, the turning and converging timing of the mainstream at the outlet of the two runners will change. The movement of the mainstream promotes the change in location of the dead water zone. The existence of the vortex zone makes the pressure distribution at the outlet of the runner uneven, which is an important reason for the asymmetry of the flow in the runner. The analysis of pressure pulsation and its frequency spectrum shows that when the working conditions change, the low-frequency, strong pressure pulsation area on the surface of the guide vane will regularly migrate between the two runners, while the high-frequency pressure pulsation that occurs in the bladeless zone will dissipate in the runner. The doubling of the blade frequency on the pressure surface and back surface of the blades gradually attenuates with the increase of frequency. The pressure pulsation attenuation on the surface of the high-position blade conforms to the linear law, and the attenuation of the pressure pulsation on the surface of the low-position blade conforms to the exponential law. The research in this paper provides a certain reference value for revealing the flow field mechanism and pressure pulsation characteristics of the double-runner Francis turbine.

The numerical simulation of cavitation flow field in a Francis turbine runner with attached blades was conducted based on the no-slip mixture model in the Euler approach and the Singhal cavitation model. The RNG model after correcting viscosity and the pressure correction algorithm (SIMPLE) were supplemented. The distributions of the water-vapor volume fraction under non-design conditions were obtained. The results show that the method based on two-phase mixture model can be used to simulate the position and degree of cavitation flow in Francis turbine.

This paper does unidirectional fluid-solid coupling calculation on the runner strength under three designed head loading conditions of a certain Francis turbine in the north-eastern China. The water pressure on the blade in the flow fields of different operating conditions is calculated by means of CFD software CFX. With the help of ansys workbench, the water pressure is loaded to the blade as structural load to conclude the static stress distribution and deformation of the runner under different operating conditions. The results show that the maximum static stress increases with the rise of the flow and appears near the influent side of the blade connected to the runner crown; the maximum deformation increases with the rise of the flow and appears on the band. The results provides effective basis for the structural design and safe operation of the Francis turbine.

Part load operation of hydro turbines with fixed pitch blades causes complex instable cavitation flow in the diffuser cone. Application of PIV systems provides the opportunity to investigate the flow velocity and turbulent fields in the case of development of cavitation vortex, the so-called turbine rope, at the outlet of a Francis turbine runner. The synchronization of the PIV flow survey with the rope precession allows to apply phase averaging techniques in order to extract both the periodic velocity components and the rope layout. The influence of the turbine setting level on the volume of the cavity rope and its center is investigated, providing a physical insight on the hydrodynamic complex phenomena involved in the development of the cavitation rope at Francis turbine operating regimes.

The fundamental characteristics of rotordynamic fluid force moment on the backshroud of a Francis turbine runner in precession motion were studied using model tests and computations based on a bulk flow model. The runner is modeled by a disk positioned close to a casing with a small axial clearance. An inward leakage flow is produced by an external pump in the model test. The effects of the leakage flow rate, the preswirl velocity at the inlet of the clearance, and the axial clearance on the fluid force moment were examined. It was found that the fluid force moment encourages the precession motion at small forward precession angular velocity ratios and the region encouraging the precession motion is affected by the preswirl velocity. Through the comparisons of the fluid force moment with and without the rotation of the disk, it was found that the normal moment without the disk rotation did not have the effect to encourage the precession motion. Thus, the swirl flow due to disk rotation was found to be responsible for the encouragement of the precession motion.

Abstract The check valve is one of the most important devices for safety protection of the piping system in thermal and nuclear power plants. As the key component of the check valve, the valve disc accounts for a major effect on the flow characteristics especially during the opening and closing processes. In this paper, a typical swing check valve is taken as the research object. In order to make a comparative study, three working conditions of 30% THA (Turbine Heat Acceptance), 50% THA and 100% THA are selected. Focusing on the effects of valve disc, how does the valve disc motion interact with the flow field around the valve disc is analyzed with the help of the dynamic mesh technology. The results show that under the combined action of fluid force and gravity, the check valve can be opened and closed quickly. During the opening process, the maximum total moment of the disc appears between 45° ∼ 50° opening angle, and during the closing process the maximum total moment occurs when the disc fully closed. The flow field near the valve disc has similar variation rules with the rotation of the valve disc in the three working conditions, and the pressure near the valve disc reaches the maximum value at the moment of opening and closing. This study can provide some suggestions for the further optimal design of similar swing check valve.
