Abstract The privatisation of state-owned companies is still on the agenda of many governments worldwide. One often stated goal in the privatisation process is the increase of efficiency of the company. The question is which factors do lead to an increase in efficiency and performance of a privatised company. Where are the fundamental differences between public and private companies in this respect? One goal of this paper is also to determine if other or additional variables influence the efficiency of privatised companies in transitional countries - in contrast to developed economies. Based on the research literature, a model was developed that displays all major forces and effects in the privatisation process. Two case studies of telecommunications companies in Germany and Romania are utilised to verify the model. It is expected that privatisation will lead to an increase of efficiency, but that the main thrust derives from competition. Regulation and organisational change will typically also increase the efficiency of the company. The variables “laws and policies” and “economic condition” are of special importance for privatisations in transition economies.

In a field experiment with a retail chain (1,300 employees, 193 shops), randomly selected sales teams received a bonus. The bonus increases both sales and number of customers dealt with by 3 percent. Each dollar spent on the bonus generates $3.80 in sales, and $2.10 in profit. Wages increase by 2.2 percent while inequality rises only moderately. The analysis suggests effort complementarities to be important, and the effectiveness of peer pressure in overcoming free-riding to be limited. After rolling out the bonus scheme, the performance of the treatment and control shops converges, suggesting long-term stability of the treatment effect. (JEL D22, J31, J33, L25, L81, M53, M54)

Whereas previous studies have attempted to investigate the correlation between mode of operation (virtual versus face-to-face) and team performance, these studies have been primarily focused on project management and distance learning. However, few studies, if any, have addressed the performance of virtual teams carrying complex technical support tasks in telecommunication companies. The primary proposition of the study that there is a relationship between team performance (comprised of three factors, namely, goals achievement, customer satisfaction, and team health) and the mode of operation was tested. A secondary proposition that team size has a significant effect on the relationship between the mode of operation and support team performance was tested also. One hundred twenty support professionals working for telecommunication companies based in California's Silicon Valley completed web-based surveys, which offered data on support operations in virtual and face-to-face settings and assessment of teams' performance in each setting. Whereas the findings indicated correlations between the mode of operation and the three factors of support team, further analysis indicated weak linear relationships among the variables. In addition, data analysis failed to support a significant effect of team size on the relationships between mode of operation and the three measures of support team performance.

While previous studies tried to study the link between the mode of working (virtual versus face-to-face) and team success; less attention were given to address this topic in telecommunications companies with complex technical support tasks. This study aims to identify the relationship between mode of working and team success in telecommunications companies. This study also aims to clarify whether the team size has a significant impact on the relationship between working mode with the team success. One hundred and twenty Cyberjaya based support professionals have completed web-based surveys, offering data on support operations in virtual and face-to-face settings, and the team success in all settings. The results showed a correlation between working mode and three factors of support team success (rpb = 0,358 and 0,248; 0,395, respectively for achievement objectives, customer satisfaction and team health. In addition, the impact of team sizes on the relationships between working mode and the three factors of team success was investigated. The data analysis did not support a significant team size impact on the relationships between the mode of working and three support team success measures.

It has repeatedly been show that with conventional electron microscopes very fine electron probes can be produced, therefore allowing various micro-techniques such as micro recording, X-ray microanalysis and convergent beam diffraction. In this paper the function and performance of an SIEMENS ELMISKOP 101 used as a scanning transmission microscope (STEM) is described. This mode of operation has some advantages over the conventional transmission microscopy (CTEM) especially for the observation of thick specimen, in spite of somewhat longer image recording times.Fig.1 shows schematically the ray path and the additional electronics of an ELMISKOP 101 working as a STEM. With a point-cathode, and using condensor I and the objective lens as a demagnifying system, an electron probe with a half-width ob about 25 Å and a typical current of 5.10-11 amp at 100 kV can be obtained in the back focal plane of the objective lens.

A cylindrical mirror analyser (CMA) has been built with a parallel recording detection system. It is being used for angular resolved electron spectroscopy (ARES) within a SEM. The CMA has been optimised for imaging applications; the inner cylinder contains a magnetically focused and scanned, 30kV, SEM electron-optical column. The CMA has a large inner radius (50.8mm) and a large collection solid angle (Ω > 1sterad). An energy resolution (ΔE/E) of 1-2% has been achieved. The design and performance of the combination SEM/CMA instrument has been described previously and the CMA and detector system has been used for low voltage electron spectroscopy. Here we discuss the use of the CMA for ARES and present some preliminary results.The CMA has been designed for an axis-to-ring focus and uses an annular type detector. This detector consists of a channel-plate/YAG/mirror assembly which is optically coupled to either a photomultiplier for spectroscopy or a TV camera for parallel detection.
