Objectives: (1) To examine trends in level of student loan indebtedness for groups of pharmacists that were first licensed between 1980 and 2006; (2) To examine if demographic variables are associated with level of student loan indebtedness; (3) To examine the association between student loan debt and choice of practice setting while controlling for demographic variables. Methods: Data for this study were collected from a national random sample of 3,000 pharmacists using a self administered survey. Descriptive statistics were used to examine trends in level of indebtedness. The relationships between level of indebtedness, demographic variables and practice setting choice were examined using Chi-square statistics. Multinomial logistic regression was used to determine the independent association of student loan debt and choice of practice setting while controlling for demographic variables. Results: The proportion of licensed pharmacists reporting student loan debt after graduation, and the mean amount of debt incurred increased between 1980 and 2006. Non-white pharmacists incurred debt at a higher proportion compared to white, and they also incurred significantly higher levels of debt. A lower level of indebtedness was associated with choosing independent practice over chain practice. Conclusions: Student loan indebtedness has been increasing over time, especially for non-white pharmacy students. Future research should be done to examine other factors that might influence student debt load, work contributions and choice of practice settings. The affordability of pharmacy education for students of color and how salaries may or may not help off-set these costs also should be examined closely.   Type: Original Research

<p align="JUSTIFY">For almost seven years, Street Law has been a part of the curriculum of the Prague Law School. Over the years, law students have taught law at public and private grammar schools, high schools, business schools and also some vocational schools, mostly located in the Prague region. They were all secondary schools and predominantly ethnically homogenous, since members of the largest Czech minority, the Roma, for various reasons hardly ever attend these schools. Last summer, however, a group of Prague Law School students and recent graduates travelled to Eastern Slovakia to organize Street Law workshops for Roma teenagers. This text tells the story of their journey, reflects their teaching methodology and experience and offers a perspective of a law student participating in the workshops.</p>

It is frequently suggested that law school debt is preventing new law school graduates from entering public service careers. The basis for this contention is largely anecdotal, however. This study puts the presumption to empirical scrutiny. Aggregate data from law schools and individual-level data from law students both point to the same conclusion: law students may indeed be competing in a money chase, but it is not because of their indebtedness. Private firms with prestige and high salaries are appealing to many students regardless of their debt burden. And government and public interest jobs may be in too short supply to meet the demand of non-elite students who are essentially closed out of the high-paying jobs in larger firms. The biggest barrier between these students and public service jobs may be the lack of supply of these jobs, not the lack of demand for them.

Whenever the discourse of clinical legal education (CLE) ascends, the likely injudicious assumption that may come to one’s mind, especially of a layman is that, it concerns only classroom or clinically confined pedagogy marked by simulations; in-house law student learning activities that end up with their regular experiences of the learning processes. However, CLE in reality, beyond parochial thinking is a socio-legal justice tool for addressing motley challenges of humanity particularly those that confront poverty-stricken and vulnerable citizens who are always undid from equal opportunities and access to the court system. Thus, this article argues that CLE transcends what goes on in typical classrooms or law clinics. The article explores different realistic clinical legal education justice initiatives (CLEJIs) that university and law school students can work with in fostering social justice in a wider societal context. To achieve this purpose, the article considers a rethink of the concept of CLE to capture its historical rationales against definitional setback offered by some authors. It further highlights some critical issues indispensable for the sustainability of CLE initiatives around the world. While the argument of this study draws upon existing findings, it presents new ideas achieved through synthesis of thinking in a qualitatively analytical perspective.

11024 Background: There are multiple factors influencing future career plans for US hematology/oncology fellows. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of student loan debt and visa status as potential factors affecting their career choices. Methods: A total of 159 US hematology/oncology fellowship programs were contacted, program directors forwarded the survey to current hematology/oncology fellows and recent graduates (classes of 2019, 2018 and 2017). The survey consisted of 13 questions regarding their student loan debt and visa status, research experience, initial career plan, current career for graduates, the influence of student loan debt and visa status on their career decisions (academic, private practice, industry), and whether or not their training programs had resources or mentorship to help them deal with those factors. We used a scale of 1-5 to determine how much each factor affected career choice (1 = extremely unaffected, 5 = extremely affected). Results: A total of 220 physicians have participated, 177 (80.5%) fellows and 43 (19.5%) graduates. For graduates, 35% had student loans during fellowship, 40% of them thought that their loans affected their career choice with a score of 4-5. 93% of graduates with student loans answered that they weren't aware of resources/mentorship to address their loans effect on their career. 44% of graduates were on J1/H1 visa during training, 74% of them thought that their visa status affected their career choice with score of 4-5. 63% of graduates who were on visa answered that they weren't aware of resources/mentorship to address visa status as a factor influencing their career options. For current fellows, 51% have student loans, one third of them thought that their loans affected their career choice with score 4-5. 77% of fellows with student loans answered that they weren't aware of resources/mentorship to address their loans effect on their career. 16% of current fellows are on J1/H1 visa, 66% of them thought that their visa status is affecting their career choice with score 4-5. 62% of fellows who are on visa answered that they weren't aware of resources/mentorship to address visa status as a factor influencing their career options. Conclusions: Hematology/oncology fellows report that student loan debt and visa status are important factors affecting their career decisions. The majority of hematology/oncology fellows in this survey weren’t aware of resources or mentorship to help deal with these factors. Mentors need to be aware of these factors to help fellows achieve their career goals.

In 1899 seventeen-year old Ahmad Lutfī al-Sayyid (1872–1963) nearly entered the Cairo School of Engineering instead of the School of Law.1 Had he done so, he might never have climbed to fame as a writer, educator, and cabinet minister. An occasional engineer did reach national prominence in Egypt during the first half of the twentieth century, but it was the lawyers who ran the show. Upon entering law school in the fall of 1889, Lutfī had as colleagues three future prime ministers (Ismā'īl Ṣidqī, 'Abd al-Khāliq Tharwat, and Muhammad Tawfīq Nasīm) as well as the enthusiastic nationalist Mu⋅⃛afā Kāmil.2 He had made a wise choice.

Working with ideas of performance and performativity, the geographies of law, and the sociology of the legal profession, this paper reports on a study of the microgeography of a social space in a major Canadian law school, and, more specifically, questions what it means to be a law student there. ‘Coffee House’ at McGill University Faculty of Law is a weekly social event sponsored for half the academic year by prominent Canadian law firms who supply free alcohol and food to the students attending in an effort to ‘brand’ their firm. These events contribute in different ways to the socialisation and identity of the law students present. We argue that a performativity of what it is to be a McGill law student heading towards corporate success begins to be structured through the repetition of a range of performances undertaken in this space.
