This study focuses on two discussions. First, to describe the application of character education at SMA Negeri 2 Lhokseumawe. Second, to describe the obstacles in the application of character education so that it is not effective in overcoming student deviant behavior. By using a qualitative approach, this study comes to an understanding that the implementation of character education in SMA Negeri 2 Lhokseumawe is carried out through several strategies, including: a). providing outreach to teachers; b). preparation of syllabus and lesson plans based on character education; c). integrating and applying values in the teaching and learning process in the classroom; d) creating a school culture; e) habituation; and f) teacher exemplary. The implementation of character education in order to reduce students' deviant behavior has not been optimal because it faces a number of obstacles, such as a) minimal family contribution; b) inconsistency of values and norms at school and outside school; and c) teachers' difficulties in adapting to curriculum changes. In addition, the definition of deviant behavior and social dysfunction has so far only relied on "blaming deviant individual behavior", but ignores problems at the school structure level that can lead students to deviant behavior and anomie states.

Teaching and learning practices in sciences: methodological development for the perception of the various registers of daily school life We investigated the various registers, which appear on an introduction of a Chemistry and Physics notebook, to verify if they may disclose aspects of the school culture. We observed the most common procedures of writing and their uses: notations, copies and transcriptions, suggesting practices that favor scientific memorization contents. The transcription of oral language was also evident. Illustrations and notes appeared as a way to personalize the notebook, transforming it in something further than a place to copy lessons and to register concepts obtained from the textbook or the teacher explanations. We synthesized a methodology for notebook analysis that can be applied to a high number of notebooks and reveal relevant aspects of teachers and students’practices in Science education and school culture. Information technology in schools aggressively emerged in the late 1990s to reinvent the teaching and learning process in Malaysia. Schools no longer existed merely for the purposes of traditional teaching and learning but were needed to enhance their knowledge activities so as to be able to cope with the rapid changes that were taking place. The objectives of this study are to determine the contribution of knowledge contextual factors to the knowledge activities, with particular reference to the emergence of information technologies in schools, and to evaluate progress with respect to knowledge activities in school education. The research is designed around questionnaires based on a knowledge-management conceptual framework administered to random samples of teachers in information technologyfacilitated schools and regular schools so as to be able to make comparisons. Interestingly the fi ndings show that the information technology under the “ICT Facilitated school” is not a key factor contributing to knowledge sharing among the teachers. The fi ndings also provide evidence that culture is the most important factor relating to a knowledge activity. Knowledge friendly, motivating staff , committ ed leadership, openness and mutual trust are some examples of positive school culture, whereas management factor remains crucial in facilitating learning and sharing among teachers.   Keywords: Knowledge management, school, culture, management, technology.

The aim of the research was to find out what factors of school culture affect the expected results of teaching and learning processes in basic schools. The research evaluated current and desired school culture in selected basic schools to identify culture gaps. Research using School Culture Inventory explored relations among selected sub-categories, namely between the sub-categories focused on shared objectives, trust in school leadership, and on managerial approach and the important sub-categories focused on innovation process and expected results of teaching and learning processes. The independent evaluators were final year students of the Faculties of Education from two universities in the Czech Republic who assessed schools after one month of their position at the selected schools (the research sample included 182 basic schools). The findings provided the evidence of current culture gaps and of a positive association between higher positive evaluations in the sub-category leadership and management and the sub-category expected results of teaching and learning processes. The results brought by the research will help school leaders when they plan to shape or change the culture of the schools they manage. Keywords: culture gaps, school culture, school culture inventory, shaping school culture.

This chapter focuses on the metamorphosis of teacher leaders, from the roles, responsibilities, and dispositions of teacher leaders, to teacher leaders using technology for self-professional development as well as leading professional development for the improvement of teaching and learning. The underlying premise is that teacher leaders work with diverse populations of both teachers and public school students who are present in schools today. It is strong leadership at the classroom level that makes a difference with colleagues and students, regardless of ethnicity, gender, or social class, and can ultimately impact an entire school culture. This chapter integrates these core tenants in an effort to guide the reader to understanding the necessity of developing teacher leaders to meet the challenges inherent in 21st century schools and classrooms.

This chapter will critically examine the disruptive pedagogies being employed during the initiation, transition, and extension phases of a virtual school culture and its impact upon the virtual school community, pre-service, and ultimately, in-service-teachers. Through the virtual, it is intended that pre-service teachers (who have a placement at this school of ideas) may be able to experience new ways of teaching and learning and, in turn, start to step away from their schooled pasts in order to reflect upon, critically assess and then enact needed change. As pre-service teachers are the potential creators of yet unchartered pedagogies, they are a vital resource. Provocation will be examined using an Action Research model.
