In recent developments, the ASU HB5 has been modified so that the timing, positioning, and scanning of the finely focused electron probe can be entirely controlled by a host computer. This made the asynchronized handshake possible between the HB5 STEM and the image processing system which consists of host computer (PDP 11/34), DeAnza image processor (IP 5000) which is interfaced with a low-light level TV camera, array processor (AP 400) and various peripheral devices. This greatly facilitates the pattern recognition technique initiated by Monosmith and Cowley. Software called NANHB5 is under development which, instead of employing a set of photo-diodes to detect strong spots on a TV screen, uses various software techniques including on-line fast Fourier transform (FFT) to recognize patterns of greater complexity, taking advantage of the sophistication of our image processing system and the flexibility of computer software.

A prototype miniaturized Total Chemical Analysis System (μTAS) has been developed and applied to on-line monitoring of glucose and lactate in the core blood of anaesthetized dogs. The system consists of a highly efficient microdialysis sampling interface sited in a small-scale extracorporeal shunt circuit (‘MiniShunt’), a silicon machined microflow manifold and integrated biosensor array for glucose and lactate detection with associated computer software for analytical process control. During in-vivo testing the device allowed real-time on-screen monitoring of glucose and lactate with system response times of less than 5 min, made possible by the small dead volume of the microflow system. On-line glucose and lactate measurements were made in the basal state as well as during intravenous infusion of glucose or lactate. The prototype μTAS is currently suitable for trend monitoring but refinements are necessary before application of the system for determination of individual lactate values.

The development of computer software to assist the searcher when carrying out on-line information retrieval procedures using a microcomputer in place of a normal ter minal is described. Criteria for selection of a microcomputer for this purpose are given. A Cifer 2684 microcomputer ter minal which is Z-80 based with CP/M was chosen. The software allows the storage of user IDs, passwords and search data on floppy disc files which can then be sent to a host computer using simple commands. Data coming from the host can also be stored on disc. The system cuts down the time to enter a search, simplifies logging-on, and the accuracy of data can be checked before going on-line. Library staff have adapted easily to the terminal.

In most turbine engine testing facilities, the tools and techniques of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and advanced visualization have never been applied to facilitate (near) real-time analysis of the test hardware. New computer software technology has now been applied which allows server-to-client remote procedure calls (RPC), enabling supercomputers to be called from within the online test scanning program. Coupled with advanced visualization software and graphics workstations, it is possible to view the inside of a test while it is being conducted. Such capability can be as valuable to researchers in steering tests as X-rays are to doctors in diagnosing health. This report presents results from a library of software for on-line visualization. Using this system, a full turbomachine (compressor) has been visually analyzed by interpolating pressure instrument rakes to give a full flow field view of the engine (compressor). All data values at each grid cross-section are non-dimensionalized and viewed at varying ranges of iso-distortion surfaces. Regions of low or high energy can be seen as they proceed through the compressor stages. A full range of capabilities are displayed for both pressure and temperature using computer animation techniques recorded to video. Such views are unique and may provide extra information to help understand flow phenomena such as inlet distortion and how it relates, for example, to stall margin. CFD efforts are also described in conjunction with the use of RPC to supercomputers. A stream function meridional, 2D/quasi-3D solution to five blade rows is shown in context with rotating blade rows and shown on video. The value of the computer work is all generic and can be applied in almost any scientific area where on-line computer systems are used.

Abstract Background This study presents an experiment regarding the introduction of gamification strategies in occupational therapy courses. Based on previous studies, the objective is to adapt the idea of recreational escape rooms to educational environments of health sciences like occupational therapy to increase student motivation and promote game-based learning and key skills, such as teamwork. Methods Computer software was created for a collaborative escape room which allows on-line simultaneous play of up to 24–30 students. It was tested three times in an occupational therapy degree program with 75 students and it was based on two different subjects, although it can be adapted to others. The escape room was evaluated using feedback surveys and comparing students’ performances before and after the game. Descriptive exploratory statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 24. Results An appropriate use of educational escape rooms can have significant positive impacts on students’ engagement and learning. Students were found to prefer using gamification tools in their learning. Their degrees of satisfaction exceeded their expectations. Conclusions Educational escape rooms may have a positive impact on students’ motivation and a statistically significant improvement of test scores after playing was found. Comments from the feedback surveys were used to improve successive versions of the software and design of the game. The internal high temperature of tire not only reduces the service life of the tire, but also increases fuel consumption. An on-line monitoring system of temperature field in tire is designed. The temperature measurement module of lower computer is made up of temperature measurement network of thermocouple, single chip microcomputer and other modules. The upper computer software is designed under the environment of VC ++, making use of the serial port to realize communication. The functions such as temperature collection, analysis, display and storage capabilities were realized. The system has the advantages of convenient use, reliable operation, solving the difficult problem of obtaining tire actual temperature.

The man-machine interface (MMI) is a critical element in the specification of computer software for on-line information systems. To help ensure effective MMI software design, a requirements matrix is proposed to categorize the functional capabilities required for characteristic user tasks. Based on this matrix, design guidelines can be tailored to required capabilities. This approach to specifying MMI design must be tried in system acquisition programs to evaluate its usefulness.
