The principal aim of this chapter is to provide an overview and synthesis of the diffusion, perpetuation, and contextual transformation of traditional geopolitical thinking throughout the Indo-Pacific region and assess how these concepts and ideas might still form some input into regional geopolitical thinking, particularly among some key individual states within the Indo-Pacific. The re-emergence of these classical ideas and their deployment through different national lenses reveals the construction of vastly disparate Indo-Pacific regionalisms, in which, we argue, narrow national constructions of the region take precedence over more genuine, pan-regional aspirations. In the twenty-first century, to some degree, the Indo-Pacific concept is a useful enabling tool for regional state territorial expansionism and/or for the geographical extension of military power and control. However, this enabling Indo-Pacific concept contains within it the potential for significant regional and even global conflict. This prospect has also been predicted by Haushofer.

Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, we have taken knowledge of numerous economic and financial scandals, each one more amazing than the last. Almost always those scandals are categorized as accounting fraud. In fact, they refer to the manipulation of results and lack of ethical principles. Organizations hitherto unsuspected because of the reputation they built are now a negative surprise for everybody. They are breaking trust relations that were deposited on them. As a result, it is urgent to change some paradigms of management, increasing effective participation methods and control by the stakeholders, where confidence in disclosed financial information, along with other variables, of more qualitative nature, will be unavoidable. This strategy will have the merit to solve a complex problem in a simple and effective way! Gertrude Stein was a modernist writer of the twentieth century, notable for the extremity of her stylistic innovations. During the first half of her career, her radical experimentation made her a target of mockery. In 1933, she published The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, a memoir of modernist activity in Paris written in a more accessible style. Intellectually serious but amusing and filled with gossip about charismatic figures (Picasso and Hemingway, among others), it was a surprise best seller in the USA and made Stein a celebrity; she remained an affectionately regarded public figure for the rest of her life. However, at her death and for decades after, she was not a respectable object of critical attention. To university critics, Joyce, Pound, and Eliot had set the standard for literary achievement, and Stein’s work seemed a formless self-indulgence. It was not until the latter decades of the twentieth century, with the rise of a number of related intellectual and artistic forces — feminist critics and poets, the general US innovative poetic tendency, Language writing, and post-structuralism — that Stein began to be taken seriously. In the twenty-first century, while her writing still raises controversy, it is prominent in the modernist canon.
