The Relationship

Objective - The aim of the study is to identify the determinants of mutual fund performance. Mutual funds have grown in the global financial scene since the 1890s. Past studies have examined various issues associated with mutual funds. However, in Malaysia, mutual fund related studies are rather limited. While most global researches observe the determinants of conventional mutual fund performance, the literature in Malaysia focuses only on a comparison of the performance of mutual funds. Hence, this study aims to fill that gap by providing a framework to assess the determinants of mutual fund performance. More specifically, the study proposes a conceptual framework to determine the effect of historical return, fund governance, timing and selection skills on mutual fund performance. The advancement of the study can be found through the use of theory of performance and mutual fund fees as a mediator in determining the performance of mutual fund fees. Methodology/Technique - A quantitative approach based on secondary data will be used in this study. Multivariate regression analysis and structural equation modelling is also used to evaluate the relationship between the variables. Findings - A conceptual framework is proposed based on the Theory of Performance. The model fit and the mediating role of mutual fund fees will be confirmed after the collection of the research data. It is expected that historical return, fund governance, timing and selection skills will affect mutual fund performance and mutual fund fees will mediate the relationship between the two. Novelty – This study will provide a new perspective on mutual fund performance by using the Theory of Performance. In addition, the mediating role of mutual fund fees is further examined in relation to the specified determinants and mutual fund performance. Type of Paper - Review. The increased wealth invested in mutual funds and recent scandals at many fund firms have led to increased scrutiny of mutual fund governance. We examine measures of the strength of mutual fund governance and the relation of these measures to fund performance. We utilize the Morningstar Stewardship Grade and its determining factors to measure the quality of a fund’s governance and the information ratio to measure risk adjusted performance. We find that strong corporate governance is associated with better risk-adjusted performance, after controlling for investment objective, expenses, and fund size. The key governance components related to performance are board quality, managerial incentives, and fees. Our results support the notion that, in the mutual fund industry, good governance is consistent with good performance.

The Impact

The Indian mutual fund industry is one of the fastest growing and most competitive segments of the financial sector. The extent of under-penetration in the market is a sore point with the financial services industry, with a large amount of savings being channelized into fixed deposits, gold and real estate rather than the capital markets. The mutual fund industry is yet to spread its reach beyond Tier I cities. The top fifteen cities contribute to 85% of the pie, with the remaining 15% distributed among other cities. Performance analysis of mutual funds is usually made on the basis of return-risk framework. Traditionally, excess return (over risk-free rate) to risk ratios were used for the purpose mutual fund evaluation. Subsequently, the application of non-parametric mathematical programming techniques in the context of performance evaluation facilitated multi-criteria decision making. However,the estimates of performance on the basis of conventional programming techniques like DEA and FDH are affected by the presence of outliers in the sample observations. The present, accordingly uses more robust benchmarking techniques for evaluating the performance od sectoral mutual fund schemes based on observations for the second half of 2010. The USP of the present study is that it uses two partial frontier techniques (Order-m and Order- a) which are less susceptible to the problem of extreme data.
