PurposeCurrently, the evaluation of scientific performance of universities is one of the important indicators in various ranking systems. One way to evaluate the academic performance of universities is to analyze the scientific documents of universities in reputable international databases. The purpose of this article is to analyze and evaluate the scientific publications of Alzahra University (Iran) as the top 100–200 universities during 1986–2019.Design/methodology/approachThis study was performed using bibliometrics and visualization techniques. The Scopus database was used to collect data. Affiliation search and advanced search were used to retrieve the data. Excel, VOSviewer and CRExplorer software were used to analyze the data.FindingsThe results showed that the scientific publications and received citations by Alzahra University documents during the time have been upward. At the national level, it was the most scientific collaboration with researchers at the University of Tehran. Also at the international level, the most scientific collaboration has been with the United States, Canada and Germany. In total, 80% of scientific publications were published by 20% of authors. Also, 70% of the highly cited articles were published in journals with quartile 1. Finally, clustering results showed that Alzahra University's scientific publications are in five main categories, including “chemistry,” “physics,” “biology,” “psychology and educational sciences” and “accounting sciences, management, and computer science.”Originality/valueThis study could be a good model for evaluating the performance of scientific productions of universities and scientific institutions with bibliometrics and visualization approaches.

Role of the library in documenting the scholarship of Lublin University of Technology academicsThe paper presents new functions and roles performed by Lublin University of Technology Library in context of the university parametric marks. A library has always played an important role in the scientific environment of universities. The primary aim of its activity is supporting the academics’ scientific performance. It has been done by providing the documentation of their scholarship. The composites of information on publications from various sources not only register the items but also positively influence the scholarly communications by enhancing discoverability. These databases, additionally equipped with tools necessary to analyse citations, start to play a more and more important role. Our bibliographic database has been enriched recently by new parametric indicators: journal mark indicators, citations, for example, according to the Web of Science. It allows the library to support the system of evaluation of scientific institutions conducted by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Poland. The paper presents a description of the important role played by the Scientific and Technical Information Department at the University as the main coordinator concerning documentation and information including parametric evaluation of the university 2013–2016.

Abstract Scientometric studies are enduring studies that portray an organized visual of messy data. The current study is a scientometric study based on secondary data sets included in Scopus. A corpus of 311 documents published in the journal Annals of Library and Information Studies (ALIS) from 2011 to 2020 was the population of the study. The study focused on several characteristics of the journal, including article distribution, average author per document, average document per year, authorship productivity, collaboration index, country-wise distribution of documents and citation analysis. The study retrieved the most prolific author contributing to this journal with 19 articles. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the University of Delhi were the top literary contributors to the ALIS journal. The University of Kerala got the most citations per document (6.833). The maximum count of author keywords (Scientometrics) used in the journal from 2011 to 2020 was 135.

The study analyses the Brain Tumors research Publications in during 2009 to 2018 based on the Web of Science database. The objectives of the study were to perform a scientometric analysis of all brain tumors research publications by scientist. The criterion studies include an increase of publication, document wise distribution of records country-wise distribution of publications, recognition of the most prolific authors, praise highly journals and extremely motivated institutions and language wise distribution of publications. The results showed that 44604 of records were published in of records were published in the world. All most productive countries and their publications top 30 countries was top most contributed 10 places of India on Brian tumors research with 1613 (2.54%) records. Most of the articles were published in the form of articles, review, meeting abstracts, and editorial material. USA was the most productive country on Brain tumors. The study also found that only 21 authors were contributed above 100 numbers of articles and the author Wang Y with 246 publications has occupied the first position. The University Texas MD Anderson Cancer Centre was topmost top most contributed institution on Brain Tumors research with 782 records.

Numerous studies have evaluated the publication performance of universities worldwide, but studies examining intra-institutional performance still remain scarce. In this paper, as a case study, we provide an in-depth quantitative-qualitative analysis of University of Belgrade? (UB) leading institutions performance. The results show that the UB scientific institutes, faculties of sciences and mathematics, together with the Faculty of Medicine and several faculties of technology and engineering sciences exhibit excellent scientific results. The Faculty of Medicine and Institute Vinca lead the way in terms of number of published papers, while Institute of Physics excels when taking into account the quality of journals. Results pointed out that the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy, besides the number of papers, has a strong showing in terms of citation metrics. In addition, using a network graph we present collaboration patterns within the UB. This analysis may be a step in the right direction towards a model for evaluating and ranking institutions within a particular university.

Nowadays more and more of the reductions of astronomical data are made with electronic computers. As we in Uppsala have an IBM 1620 at the University, we have taken it to our help with reductions of spectrophotometric data. Here I will briefly explain how we use it now and how we want to use it in the near future.

During the past several years, a systematic search for novae in the Magellanic Clouds has been carried out at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. The Curtis Schmidt telescope, on loan to CTIO from the University of Michigan is used to obtain plates every two weeks during the observing season. An objective prism is used on the telescope. This provides additional low-dispersion spectroscopic information when a nova is discovered. The plates cover an area of 5°x5°. One plate is sufficient to cover the Small Magellanic Cloud and four are taken of the Large Magellanic Cloud with an overlap so that the central bar is included on each plate. The methods used in the search have been described by Graham and Araya (1971). In the CTIO survey, 8 novae have been discovered in the Large Cloud but none in the Small Cloud. The survey was not carried out in 1974 or 1976. During 1974, one nova was discovered in the Small Cloud by MacConnell and Sanduleak (1974).

A “new charts program” for the Americal Association of Variable Star Observers was instigated in 1966 via the gift to the Association of the complete variable star observing records, charts, photographs, etc. of the late Prof. Charles P. Olivier of the University of Pennsylvania (USA). Adequate material covering about 60 variables, not previously charted by the AAVSO, was included in this original data, and was suitably charted in reproducible standard format.Since 1966, much additional information has been assembled from other sources, three Catalogs have been issued which list the new or revised charts produced, and which specify how copies of same may be obtained. The latest such Catalog is dated June 1978, and lists 670 different charts covering a total of 611 variables none of which was charted in reproducible standard form previous to 1966.
