AbstractRight-tailed Dickey–Fuller-type unit root tests against the explosive alternative have become popular in economics and finance for detecting asset price bubbles. This paper studies the size properties of fixed sample and recursive right-tailed Dickey–Fuller tests if the relevant series contains a unit root, but a structural break in the drift parameter occurs. It is shown that positive size distortion and therefore spurious rejections of the unit root null hypothesis in favour of the explosive alternative can be a problem for both types of test. Some possible solutions to this problem are briefly discussed.

AbstractStructural break tests are often applied as a pre-step to ensure the validity of subsequent statistical analyses. Without any a priori knowledge of the type of breaks to expect, eye-balling the data can indicate changes in some parameter, e.g., the mean. This, however, can distort the result of a structural break test for that parameter, because the data themselves suggested the hypothesis. In this paper, we formalize the eye-balling procedure and theoretically derive the implied size distortion of the structural break test. We also show that eye-balling a stretch of historical data for possible changes in a parameter does not invalidate the subsequent procedure that monitors for structural change in new incoming observations. An empirical application to Bitcoin returns shows that taking into account the data-dredging bias, which is incurred by looking at the data, can lead to different test decisions.

This paper examines the empirical relationship between unemployment and real output in the Philippines utilizing quarterly data from the Labor Force Survey by the Philippine Statistics Authority for the period from 1990-2014. The study employed three variants of Okun’s Law – the “gap” approach, the “first difference” approach, and a dynamic approach.   Findings show that the Okun’s coefficients based on the gap approach are consistent with the theoretical expectation of a negative relationship.  In the ARDL model, labor force participation rate and trade openness were found to be significantly related to unemployment. The result of dummy variable test revealed the presence of structural break following the re-definition of unemployment in the Philippines in 2005. Recursive least squares and rolling regressions show evidence of parameter instability in several sub-periods.

This research aims to investigate empirically the existence of Indonesian export import cointegration. This Research used the Gregory-Hansen cointegration analysis due to structural break based on Indonesia Export import annual data (period of 1970-2013 ). The results showed that there is no-cointegration of Indonesia export and import which means that Indonesia is facing international budget constraint and trade deficit isn’t a short term phenomenon.
