Commuter train is a viable alternative to road transport to ease the traffic congestion which requires appropriate planning by concerned authorities. The research is aimed to assess passengers’ perception about commuter train service running in areas near Dhaka city. An Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) model has been developed to evaluate service quality (SQ) of commuter train. Field survey data has been conducted among 802 respondents who were the regular user of commuter train and 12 attributes have been selected for model development. ANFIS was developed by the training and then tested by 80% and 20% of the total sample respectively. After that, model performance has been evaluated by (i) Confusion Matrix (ii) Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and attributes are ranked based on their relative importance. The proposed ANFIS model has 61.50% accuracy in training and 47.80% accuracy in testing.  From the results, it is found that 'Bogie condition', 'Cleanliness', ‘Female harassment’, 'Behavior of staff' and 'Toilet facility' are the most significant attributes. This indicates that some necessary measures should be taken immediately to recover the effects of these attributes to improve the SQ of commuter train.

Purpose of Study: The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficiency of bus bay compare to the curbside bus stop in a midblock road segment of Dhaka city. Methodology: Vehicle composition and traffic volume were counted on-peak hours for the midblock of Azimpur road near the existing bus stop. Simulation models were developed in VISSIM, where Model 1 represented the existing road scenario with curbside bus stop, and Model 2 represented the same road segment with a bus bay. Main findings: The simulation result showed that Model 2 outperformed Model 1 due to the presence of bus bay. Comparing Model 1, travel time and delay reduced by varying 1.80% to 12.5% and 6.25% to 100% respectively in Model 2 during the simulation. Similarly, average speed increased by 1.39% and density decreased by 61.29% in model 2. Application of this study: Curbside bus stops result in abrupt halt, disrupt traffic flow, and queuing of the small-sized vehicle behind buses. These bus stops caused traffic congestion and delays in urban roads which can be alleviated by alternatives, such as, bus bay. The novelty of this study: The bus bay is a good alternative to the curbside bus stop, which can improve existing traffic conditions in urban roads.

The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the land use change in Dhaka City based on the need and purpose to predict future scenario of Dhaka City. Dhaka being a mega city has been challenged by numerous difficulties like unplanned urbanization, traffic congestion, water logging etc. Land use classification and analysis is performed using a GIS and Remote sensing technique, and GIS aided ‘Markov Cellular Automata’ technique is used to model the land use change. Based on the past trend (from 1991 to 2008) of land use changes, the future land use map of Dhaka city for the year of 2020 and 2050 has been generated. And collected maps and images were sorted and classified for analysis and interpretation. Landsat TM image of 1991 and Google image of 2008 were employed in this study to produce land use classification based on Anderson modified version method. IDRISI, Land Change Modeler (LCM) was used to analyze the land use/cover changes between various classes during the period 1991-2008. It is assumed that this kind of research will contribute to shaping the urban form of the city in a planned manner. So, that Dhaka can be a much more livable and planned city in near future.
