Natural gas (NG) not only emits fewer greenhouse gases and air pollutants than coal but also plays the role of a peak power source that can respond immediately to the variability of increasing renewables. Although the share of NG generation worldwide is increasing, it is difficult for South Korea to increase its NG generation significantly in terms of fuel supply security, since it depends on imports for all of the NG used for power generation. Therefore, the optimal share of NG generation in electric power generation is a serious concern. This note attempts to estimate the optimal share by modelling the plausible relationship between NG generation and national output in the Cobb–Douglas production function setting and then deriving the output-maximizing share of NG generation. The production function is statistically significantly estimated using annual data from 1990 to 2016, allowing for the first-order serial correlation. The optimal share is computed to be 20.3%. Therefore, it is recommended that South Korea increases the share of NG generation slightly and makes efforts to secure a stable NG supply, given that, according to the national plan, the share will be 18.8% in 2030.

The anaerobic biodigestion is as an alternative treatment for vinasse that preserve and even increase its fertilization potential (phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen content), dramatic reducing the BOD, making safer the use of treated vinasse for field fertirrigation. The process also yield methane, a very convenient and eco-friendly fuel gas, so the paper deals with a methodology for the calculation of the cost of the biogas, considering also the benefits of the fertirrigation using the liquid effluents from the digester, as well as the solids residues, very rich in organic matter. An analysis of the economical feasibility of the use of the biogas, obtained from the vinasse anaerobic digestion, as fuel, is also carried out. Different scenarios are evaluated, like: electric power generation through Reciprocating Combustion Engines (RCE), gas turbines and microturbines (MT), the cofiring of the biogas and bagasse in the mill’s boilers, the sale of the substituted bagasse, its utilization for electric power generation and the use of the biogas, as fuel, in spray drying of thermal sensible bioproducts (yeasts) to be commercialized. The possibility of selling the certificates of avoided greenhouse gasses emissions (carbon credits) due to the use of the biogas in substitution to fossil fuels, is also considered.

The design, construction, and development of micro-turbines using 3D printing has been an important advance in the wind energy field to explore the possibility of offering viable alternative for the electric power generation, reducing the pollution caused by fossil fuels. In this work, a five blade vertical axis wind turbine prototype was tested. The components were designed using CAD and the turbine was manufactured by additive technology in a 3D printer. The material employed for 3D printing was commercial polylactic acid. The mechanical properties of the material used were obtained by tensile tests under the ASTM D-638 standard. On the other hand, a static structural simulation was performed by finite element method. Maximum tensile stress safety factor, maximum principal stresses, and fatigue analyses of the main turbine components were computed. The turbine performance as function of rotational velocity and relative wind velocity was analyzed implementing an experimental set-up.

INTRODUCTION. The Brazilian electricity sector and parts of society are experiencing the impacts of COVID-19, which spreads throughout the world, paralyzing all or part of its activities. The reduction in electricity consumption leads to an analysis of the stability of the Brazilian energy matrix that serves different social segments. OBJECTIVE. The objective of this work was to carry out an analysis of the electric power generation sector and its standardization, the perspectives of its post-Covid-19 behaviour and the role of renewable energy sources, in particular the photovoltaic industry. METHOD. An analysis was made of the electric power generation sector and its standardization, the prospects for its post-Covid-19 behaviour and the role of the solar photovoltaic systems. RESULTS. Scenarios evaluated: updating of the regulatory framework for the Brazilian electric sector, the solar energy market photovoltaic, electricity consumption and the solar photovoltaic systems as a complementary source in this climate change scenario. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS. It is concluded that sustainable transitions on the planet, associated with economic growth, promote human development for a low carbon community.
