Abstract It is well documented that mental health outcomes are correlated between spouses. There are several alternative hypotheses for this correlation, including both causal and non-causal pathways. In this paper, I use an instrumental variables/fixed effects approach to examine whether there is evidence that an individual's mental health status spills over on his or her spouse's mental health status. Results from the IV-FE specifications that use spousal job problems as an instrument are large in magnitude. In particular, spousal mental health status is estimated to have a greater influence on an individual's mental health status than his or her own mental health endowment and is similar in magnitude with his or her own physical health status. Although not conclusive, these findings suggest that within-family spillovers of mental illness could be economically important and that policies that reduce mental health problems for individuals likely have unmeasured benefits for their family members.

This paper considers the family as the basic condition for the mental health of a child when adapting to kindergarten. The specific features of the intrafamilial conditions and factors shaping the mental health of a preschool child are shown. Scientific data on the regularities of a child’s passage through the adaptation period and the important role of the family for the dynamics of the adaptation process are provided. Analysis of empirical evidence of long-term interaction with families of pupils attending kindergartens of the Leninsky District of Ekaterinburg served to find out the influence of new social relations on the emotional well-being of a child and its parents upon admission to kindergarten. The intrafamilial problems deteriorating the psychophysical health of a child and complicating its adaptation to kindergarten are revealed. It is shown that these problems lead to emotional instability, developmental delay, as well as the troubled behavior and communication of a child. The peculiarities of how the adaptation period affects the parents are considered when parents reassess their attitude towards parenthood and their child in the process of the socialassessment and new social conditions. The specific activities of the teaching staff when interacting with the child’s family members for the sake of maintaining and strengthening the child’s mental health are outlined. An analysis of the various forms and techniques of communication between teachers and specialists of preschoolinstitutions dedicated to the psychological and pedagogical support of the family for raising the psychological awareness of parents is provided. The participation of parents in the interaction with teachers encourages their further active interaction, and such an active participation forms the background for maintaining and strengthening the mental health of a child while adapting to kindergarten. Abstract This paper presents simple measures of individual and family mental health indices based on axiomatic foundations and integrates mental health into a neoclassical model that allows for proper substitution possibilities in the family preferences and quantifies its significance in family utility. We find that mental health effects are far more important than the effect of consumption or children's schooling in determining family utility. We illustrate the usefulness of our approach by considering the case of HIV/AIDS experience in India. Using our approach, we find that while there are no significant differences in per capita consumption and schooling between HIV and NON HIV families, the welfare loss from HIV/AIDS are still considerably large due to the inclusion of mental health. Integrating mental health in a utility maximization framework helps us quantify this welfare loss.

ABSTRACTObjective: to identify at the brazilian nursing scientific production the role of the family regards to brazilian psychiatric reform and the substitutive psychiatric services. Methodology: it was performed the articles searched in LILACS (2000-2006), the descriptors used were "mental health", and "family" and "mental health services", was selected 16 articles. Results: four main topics were established: The Missing/Presence Family in treatment; Mental Illness, Family and Healthcare Professionals: Divergence/Convergence; Formation of Social Networks of Family Support and Users; Overrun and Deconstruction of Stereotypes about madness Relatives: Field of Practical Nursing. Conclusion: the results indicated the challenges of mental health professionals, are in search of the deconstruction of practices based on the model hospital, are the need to understand the functioning of the family dynamics, as a way to bring the family to the service. The mere existence and functioning of substitute services do not guarantee that the assumptions of the national policy on mental health are being implemented. Metodologia: a busca dos artigos foi realizada no LILACS (2000-2006), através dos descritores “saúde mental”, “família” e “serviços de saúde mental”, selecionando-se 16 artigos. Resultados: foram construídos quatro eixos temáticos: A Família Ausente/Presente no Tratamento; Reforma Psiquiátrica, Família e Profissionais de Saúde: Divergências/Convergências; Formação de Redes Sociais de Suporte à Família e Usuários; Superação e Desconstrução dos Estereótipos sobre Loucura por Familiares: Campo Prático da Enfermagem. Conclusão: os resultados apontaram desafios para os profissionais de saúde mental, seja na busca da desconstrução de práticas alicerçadas no modelo hospitalocêntrico, seja na necessidade de entender o funcionamento da dinâmica familiar, como forma de trazer a família ao serviço. A simples existência e funcionamento dos serviços substitutivos não garantem que os pressupostos da política nacional de saúde mental estejam sendo implementados. Conclusiones: los resultados se refirió a los desafíos de los profesionales de la salud mental, está en búsqueda de la deconstrucción de las prácticas basadas en el modelo de hospital, es la necesidad de comprender el funcionamiento de la dinámica familiar, como una manera de traer a la familia para el servicio. The Family

We investigate the effects of early-life medical treatments on the treated children and their families. We use a regression discontinuity design that exploits changes in medical treatments across the very low birth weight (VLBW) cutoff. Using administrative data from Denmark, we establish that VLBW children have better health and higher test scores. We find that these benefits spill over to other family members: mothers enjoy better mental health and siblings have higher test scores. Maternal mental health improvements seem to be driven by better focal child health, and sibling spillovers by improved interactions within the family and parental compensating behavior.
