In an effort to promote commercial vegetable production in North Dakota and to determine the cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. Capitata Group) hybrids best adapted to this area, we conducted cabbage variety trials from 1993 to 1997 at the Oakes Irrigation Research Site in North Dakota. We evaluated cabbage yield and quality characteristics, and also demonstrated cabbage production to farmers in this area. Cabbage grows very well in North Dakota. Highest yields were in 1996 when temperatures in May were coolest. Lowest yields were in 1994 when May temperatures were the hottest. Hybrids with the highest yields and best appearance included `Gideon', `Bronco', and `Royal Vantage' for the fresh market, and `Fresco', `Cheers', `Bravo', and `Bronco' for the processing market. Despite differences in weather over the 5 years of the study, cabbage hybrids were fairly consistent as to yield and quality characteristics. Suitability of cabbage hybrids for coleslaw and shredded cabbage was tested through sensory evaluations in 1993. `SCB8101', `Stonehead', `Hinova', `Green Boy', and `Charmant' scored highest on these sensory evaluations in this single-year test.

The Red River valley and surrounding areas of North Dakota are ideal sites for growing high-quality carrots for fresh-market, processing, and dehydrated products. The results of cultivar trials performed for the past 3 years indicate that from 20 to 50 ton/acre of fresh carrots can be produced with or without irrigation in this region. The average sizes of individual carrots are big (260 to 310 g/root) due to high daytime temperatures and large diurnal temperature fluctuations during the growing season. In 1994, the highest yielding carrot cultivars were `Toudo', `Danvers 126', `Delmar', `Babbette', and `Beta III' when evaluated near Absaraka, N.D. Cultivars with highest sugar contents were `Sweetness', `Apache', `Presto', `Comanche', and `Navajo'. A summary of 2-year data on the yield and quality of carrots grown in North Dakota is presented.

Few herbicides are available for weed control in carrot. Many of those that are available are old and are in danger of being discontinued. From 2000–04, field experiments were conducted on sandy loam soils at the Oakes Irrigation Research Site in North Dakota to evaluate some of the newer herbicides for possible use in carrot production. Herbicides were tested with preplant incorporated (PPI), preemergence (PRE), and/or several postemergence (POST) application timings. The major weed in this study was hairy nightshade. Cloransulam applied PRE severely injured carrot. Dimethenamid reduced carrot stand and isoxaflutole injured carrots when they were applied PRE. Neither controlled hairy nightshade when applied either PRE or POST, resulting in carrot yield reductions. Acetochlor reduced carrot stand when applied PRE and did not control hairy nightshade when applied either PPI or PRE, resulting in reduced carrot yield. Mesotrione killed carrots when it was applied PRE, but only slightly injured carrots when applied POST. Carrot yield was reduced in some years due to lack of hairy nightshade control when mesotrione was applied POST. Sulfentrazone reduced carrot stand and yield when applied PRE. It was less injurious to carrots when applied POST, but carrot yields were reduced in some years due to lack of hairy nightshade control. Flumioxazin severely reduced carrot stand when applied PRE. When it was applied after carrots were 8 cm tall, it slightly injured carrots, but did not reduce yield except in one year when it did not control hairy nightshade. None of the herbicides tested did consistently as well as the old standards of linuron, DCPA, and trifluralin, but flumoixazin, sulfentrazone, and mesotrione may hold some promise if applied POST.

Water pumping restrictions of high-quality irrigation water from underground aquifers is affecting vegetable production in Southwest Texas. There is a need to develop efficient deficit-irrigation strategies to minimize irrigation inputs and maintain crop profitability. Our objective was to determine how growth, yield, and quality of cantaloupe (Cucumis melo L. cv. `Caravelle') are affected by irrigation systems with varying input levels, including drip depth position and polyethylene mulch. Stand establishment systems used were containerized transplants and direct seeding. Field experiments were conducted on a Uvalde silty clay loam soil. Marketable yields increased in the order of pre-irrigation followed by: dry-land conditions, furrow/no-mulch, furrow/mulch, drip-surface (0 cm depth)/mulch, drip-subsurface (10-cm depth)/mulch, and drip-subsurface (30 cm depth)/mulch. Pooled across all drip depth treatments, plants on drip had higher water use efficiency than plants on furrow/no-mulch or furrow/mulch systems. Transplants with drip-surface produced 75% higher total and fruit size No. 9 yields than drip-subsurface (10- or 30-cm depth) during the first harvest, but total yields were unaffected by drip tape position. About similar trends were measured in a subsequent study except for a significant irrigation system (stand establishment interaction for yield. Total yields were highest for transplants on drip-subsurface (10-cm depth) and direct seeded plants on drip-subsurface (10 and 30 cm depth) with mulch.

Home gardeners living in areas with alkaline water sources do not have easy or economically affordable means of acidifying irrigation water for vegetable production. One solution for achieving optimal vegetable yields using alkaline irrigation water is to grow the vegetables in a modified medium. To date, no medium on the retail market suits such growing needs. Therefore, medium recipes with varied levels (0, 4, or 8 lb/yard3) and sources of calcium [dolomitic lime, calcium sulfate (CaSO4)] and magnesium [dolomitic lime, magnesium sulfate (MgSO4)] were tested using an alkaline irrigation on ‘Oakleaf’ lettuce (Lactuca sativa), ‘Earliana’ and ‘Salad Delight’ cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata), and ‘Snow Crown’ cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) crops. Additionally, crops were grown in two environments, under a high tunnel and on a nursery yard. High tunnel and nursery yard sites were used to test media performances in the presence of, and eliminating, rainwater to simulate container-grown vegetables growing in both a home garden situation and a commercial greenhouse production situation. The base mix of all media treatments in the study was 80 bark : 20 peat and fertilized with 12 lb/yard3 slow-release fertilizer at a rate of 1.8 lb/yard3 nitrogen (N), 0.5 lb/yard3 phosphorus (P), and 1 lb/yard3 potassium (K). This initial fertilizer application was incorporated to each medium before filling containers. Four treatments were tested against a commercially available medium, industry standard (IS) treatment (a commercially available bagged medium), and a control medium [treatment C (no supplemental calcium or magnesium fertilizer)] by supplementing the base mix with the following fertilizer levels: 4 lb/yard3 each of CaSO4 and MgSO4 (treatment 1); 4 lb/yard3 dolomitic lime (treatment 2); 4 lb/yard3 each of dolomitic lime, CaSO4, and MgSO4 (treatment 3); 8 lb/yard3 dolomitic lime (treatment 4). Media treatments 1 through 4 outperformed the IS and C media treatments in nearly all crops. All crops grown on the nursery yard, and cabbage grown under the high tunnel, had greater yields when grown in medium treatment 3, compared with the IS and C media treatments (P ≤ 0.05). All crops grown in medium treatment 2 on the nursery yard produced greater yields than the IS and C media treatments (P ≤ 0.05).

Increasing fruit yield and quality of tomatoes under organic low-input conditions remains a challenge for producers and breeders. Therefore, it is necessary to identify superior tomato cultivars that are suitable for production and use as parents in breeding programmes. In the present study, the variations in plant morphology and fruit quality characteristics of tomato cultivars were assessed to reveal the traits associated with improved yield and fruit quality. Sixty diverse tomato cultivars were screened in 2015, and in 2016, a subset of 20 cultivars was selected for further evaluation under organic low-input conditions. The results showed high variability among cultivars in all 28 traits that were observed. Salad cultivars had lower plant growth and fruit quality (minerals, dry matter, total soluble solids, and total phenolics) by 10–70%, but they displayed 10–60% higher fruit yield and leaf minerals than cocktail cultivars. Salad tomato cultivars with superior yield and harvest index were mainly derived from breeding for intensive indoor production. Cocktail cultivars with superior yield were mainly derived from organic and outdoor breeding programs. There was a trade-off between fruit yield and quality, indicating a challenge for simultaneous improvement of yield and quality. The importance of Mg was highlighted because of its contribution to the fruit mineral concentration and fruit quality. Cultivars superior in one trait or trait combination under organic low-input conditions were identified to be used by producers and breeders as superior cultivars to meet their production targets and breeding objectives. The importance of Mg provides a novel path for further research on improving soil-available Mg in organic tomato production to enhance fruit mineral concentration and fruit quality in general.

Garlic is primarily grown for its cloves used mostly as a food flavoring condiment. Previous studies carried out on plant density indicate its direct influence on yield. Plant density depends on the genotype, environmental factors, cultural practices, etc. This study was established to determine the effects of different between-row spacing on growth, yield, and quality of four local accession of garlic. It was laid out on two-factorial Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications during two years. Four local accession of garlic (Langroud, Tarom, Tabriz and Hamedan) were culture in three between-rows spacing (15, 25 and 35 cm) during two years. The results of two cultivated years were different. Plant density changed when garlic cultured with different between row spacing. In present research plant yield increased when the lower between row spacing and high plant density were used but the yield improvement occurring at increased plant stand is offset by the reduction in bulb size and some quality indices such as total phenol and antioxidant which severely affects quality and market value, when garlic is produced for fresh market.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of turmeric supplementation on selected quality features, oxidative stability, and the safety of duck meat burgers. Four burger variants, namely I–control, no additive, II–with turmeric powder, III–with turmeric extract, and IV–with turmeric paste, were tested. The pH, WHC, colour parameters on the CIE L*a*b* scale, finished products’ shear force, TBARS index, and the total number of microorganisms were determined while performing sensory evaluations. Tests were carried out after 24 h, 6, 12, and 18 days of refrigerated storage (4 ± 2 °C). The addition of turmeric powder and paste significantly limited lipid oxidation processes in vacuum-packed duck meat burgers over an 18-day period. Although lipid oxidation processes accelerated after 6 days in all burger variants, burgers with powdered turmeric powder showed the lowest TBARS index values and limited total microorganism increases. Turmeric paste and powder additions resulted in decreased pH, increased water retention, and lighter colouration in refrigerated products. These additives were deemed acceptable during sensory evaluation. The most desirable aroma and taste, including juiciness, were in burgers with turmeric paste addition, while burgers with powdered additions were rated higher for their desired aroma and intensity of taste.
