Purpose The purpose of this paper is to design an adaptive nonlinear controller for a nonlinear system of integrated guidance and control. Design/methodology/approach A nonlinear integrated guidance and control approach is applied to a homing, tail-controlled air vehicle. Adaptive backstepping controller technique is used to deal with the problem, and the Lyapanov theory is used in the stability analysis of the nonlinear system. A nonlinear model of normal force coefficient is obtained from an existing nonlinear model of lift coefficient which was validated by open loop response. The simulation was performed in the pitch plane to prove the benefits of the proposed scheme; however, it can be readily extended to all the three axes. Findings Monte Carlo simulations indicate that using nonlinear adaptive backstepping formulation meaningfully improves the performance of the system, while it ensures stability of a nonlinear system. Practical implications The proposed method could be used to obtain better performance of hit to kill accuracy without the expense of control effort. Originality/value A nonlinear adaptive backstepping controller for nonlinear aerodynamic air vehicle is designed and guaranteed to be stable which is a novel-based approach to the integrated guidance and control. This method makes noticeable performance improvement, and it can be used with hit to kill accuracy.

A micro air vehicle (MAV) is a class of aircraft that has size restriction. The purpose of this project is to design a MAV, the airplane designed will be an RC (Radio Controlled) which can carry highest payload fraction possible with lowest empty weight, based on the guidelines of flight mechanics, aircraft structures, aerodynamics and control systems. This project aims to fabricate the designed MAV emphazing on all the structural aspects and other constraints respectively and to demonstrate its mission profile. The MAV has a double-bubble fuselage configuration with a rectangular high wing having a conventional tail configuration. The lateral cross-section of the wing is a cambered airfoil whose profile governs the lift distribution over the wing span. The wing span is around 4.8 feet and the model is fabricated using balsawood in this project.

Throughout the last decade, there has been an increased demand for intricate flapping-wing drones with different capabilities than larger drones. The design of flapping-wing drones is focused on endurance and stability, as these are two of the main challenges of these systems. Researchers have recently been turning towards bioinspiration as a way to enhance aerodynamic performance. In this work, the propulsion system of a flapping-wing micro air vehicle is investigated to identify the limitations and drawbacks of specific designs. Each system has a tandem wing configuration inspired by a dragonfly, with wing shapes inspired by a bumblebee. For the design of this flapping-wing, a sizing process is carried out. A number of actuation mechanisms are considered, and two different mechanisms are designed and integrated into a flapping-wing system and compared to one another. The second system is tested using a thrust stand to investigate the impact of wing configurations on aerodynamic force production and the trend of force production from varying flapping frequency. Results present the optimal wing configuration of those tested and that an angle of attack of two degrees yields the greatest force production. A tethered flight test is conducted to examine the stability and aerodynamic capabilities of the drone, and challenges of flapping-wing systems and solutions that can lead to successful flight are presented. Key challenges to the successful design of these systems are weight management, force production, and stability and control.

In many incidents involving amateur drones (ADr), the big challenge is to quickly deploy a surveillance system that countermeasures the threat and keeps track of the intruders. Depending on the area under concern, launching a single surveillance drone (SDr) to hunt the intruder is not efficient, but employing multiple ones can cope with the problem. However, in order to make this approach feasible, an easy to use mission setup and control station for multiple SDr is required, which by its turn, requires a communication infrastructure able to handle the connection of multiple SDr among themselves and their ground control and payload visualization station. Concerning this Issue, this paper presents a proposal of a network infrastructure to support the operation of multiple SDr and its practical deployment. This infrastructure extends the existing Micro Air Vehicle Link (MAVLink) protocol to support multiple connections among the SDrs and between them and a ground control station. Encouraging results are obtained, showing the viability of this proposed protocol extension.
