Objective.To describe the respiratory trajectories and their correlation with motor function in an international paediatric cohort of patients with type 2 and non-ambulant type 3 spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).Methods.Eight-year retrospective observational study of patients in the iSMAc natural history study. We retrieved anthropometrics, forced vital capacity (FVC) absolute, FVC% predicted (FVC%P.), Non-Invasive ventilation (NIV) requirement. Hammersmith functional motor scale (HFMS) and Revised performance of upper limb (RULM) were correlated with respiratory function. We excluded patients in interventional clinical trials and on Nusinersen commercial therapy.Results.There were 437 patients with SMA: 348 type 2, 89 non-ambulant type 3. Mean age at first visit was 6.9(±4.4) and 11.1(±4) years. In SMA type 2 FVC%P declined by 4.2%/year from 5 to 13 years, followed by a slower decline (1.0%/year). In type 3 FVC%P declined by 6.3%/year between 8 and 13 years, followed by a slower decline (0.9%/year). 39% SMA type 2 and 9% type 3 required NIV at median age 5.0(1.8-16.6) and 15.1(13.8-16.3) years. 84% SMA type 2 and 80% type 3 had scoliosis, 54% and 46% required surgery, which did not significantly affect respiratory decline. FVC%P positively correlated with HFMS and RULM in both subtypes.Conclusions.In SMA type 2 and non-ambulant type 3 lung function declines differently, with a common levelling after age 13 years. Lung and motor function correlated in both subtypes. Our data further defines the milder SMA phenotypes and provides novel information to benchmark the long-term efficacy of new treatments for SMA.

Background Persistent primitive trigeminal artery (PPTA) is the most common permanent carotid-basilar anastomosis. Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) has become the primary non-invasive imaging technique for evaluation of cerebral vascular anatomy and can provide detailed 3D imaging of intracranial vessels. Purpose To evaluate the usefulness of MRA for the detection of PPTA and to re-classify its variations based on the embryologic types of PcomA and its relationship with the basilar artery and its branches. Material and Methods Of the total 7329 patients who underwent MRA at our institution from March 2008 through November 2010, we retrospectively analyzed the MRAs of 24 patients with a PPTA. Special attention was given to defining the relationship of the PPTA and the basilar artery with PcomA and to determine the site of origin, size, and course of the PPTA. The PPTA classification included five types based on their anatomic relationship to the neighboring arteries. Clinical features and associated vascular anomalies are also described. Results Twenty-four (17 women and seven men, 34 ∼ 81 years of age, mean age 59.67 years) of the 7329 patients had a PPTA (0.33 %). Eleven cases (45.8%) were classified as type 1, three (12.5%) as type 2, five (20.8%) as type 3, one (4.2%) as type 4, and four (16.7%) as type 5b. Fifteen PPTAs (62.5%) were located on the left side and nine were located (37.5%) on the right side. The basilar artery proximal to the insertion of the PPTA showed severe to moderate hypoplasia in 13 cases (54%). Nine intracranial artery aneurysms were detected in seven (29%) of the 24 study patients. Conclusion This study revealed five types of PPTA and necessitates an adjustment of the previous classification of PPTA on the basis of our MRA examinations. A PPTA should be considered by both the clinician and the radiologist who interpret MR angiography.

THERE is limited information on the activity of the southern hairy-nosed wombat, Lasiorhinus latifrons, due predominantly to the cryptic nature of this species and its burrowing lifestyle. As part of a recent field study of L. latifrons, temperature data loggers were employed to determine the usefulness of this equipment for studying activity patterns in this species including; emergence times, total length of bouts of activity, patterns and variation in activity throughout the year. Data from this pilot study suggest that temperature dataloggers provide an extremely useful and relatively non-invasive means of determining activity patterns in a semi-fossorial mammal.

Цель работы - оценка изменений функционального состояния микроциркуляторного русла, изучение особенностей морфологических параметров кожи неинвазивными методами исследования при различных морфотипах старения. В исследовании приняли участие 55 человек 35-65 лет с инволюционными изменениями нижней трети лица. Выделены четыре морфотипа старения, в зависимости от которых пациенты были разделены на группы: 1-я - 19 пациенток с деформационным типом; 2-я - 17 пациенток с усталым; 3-я - 8 пациенток с мелкоморщинистым; 4-я - 11 пациенток со смешанным морфотипом. Для изучения состояния кожи использовали лазерную допплеровскую флоуметрию и УЗИ кожи (22 Mhz). Методом лазерной допплеровской флоуметрии выявлены достоверные изменения при сравнении показателей микроциркуляции и ультразвуковым методом исследования кожи - деформационного и мелкоморщинистого типов (p<0,05). У деформационного и смешанного типов наблюдали преимущественно атонический тип микроциркуляции (9,42±3,71 и 9,56±2,31 перф. ед. соответственно), а при мелкоморщинистом - спастический тип (7,86±1,6 перф. ед.), при усталом морфотипе показатель микроциркуляции был в пределах нормы (7,86±1,6 перф. ед.). Данные УЗИ кожи позволили выявить у пациенток с деформационным морфотипом старения наиболее высокие значения толщины эпидермиса (125,94±27,84 мкм), дермы (1 439±118,11 мкм), плотности дермы (12±2,59 у. е.) по сравнению с толщиной эпидермиса (85±22,01 мкм), толщиной дермы (1 130±68,55 мкм) и плотностью дермы (7,87±2,1 у. е.) при мелкоморщинистом морфотипе старения. The purpose of the work is to assess changes in the functional state of the microvasculature, study of the features of the morphological parameters of the skin by non-invasive research methods for various morphotypes of aging. The study involved 55 patients with involutional changes in the lower third of the face aged 35 to 65 years, included according with the inclusion and exclusion criteria. 4 morphotypes of aging were identified, depending on which patients were divided into corresponding groups: 1 - 19 patients with deformational type, 2 - 17 with tired type, 3 - 8 with fine wrinkled type, 4 - 11 with mixed morphotype of aging. To study the condition of the patients’ skin, laser Doppler flowmetry and ultrasound examination of the skin (22 Mhz) were used. The method of laser Doppler flowmetry revealed significant changes when comparing microcirculation indices and the ultrasound method for examining deformational and fine wrinkled type (p<0,05). In the deformational type and mixed type, a predominantly atonic type of microcirculation was observed (9,42±3,71 and 9,56±2,31 perf. u., respectively), and in fine wrinkled spastic type of microcirculation (7,86±1,6 perf. u.), in the oral morphotype the microcirculation index was within the normal range of 7,86±1,6 perf. u. The data of ultrasound examination of the skin made it possible to reveal in the deformational morphotype of aging high values of the thickness of the epidermis (125,94±27,84 μm), the dermis (1 439±118,11 μm) and the density of the dermis (12±2,59 a. u.) compared with the thickness of the epidermis 85±22,01 μm, the thickness of the dermis (1 130±68,55 μm) and the density of the dermis (7,87±2,1 c. u.) in the fine wrinkled morphotype of aging.

We have long felt that some form of electronic information retrieval would be more desirable than conventional photographic methods in a high vacuum electron microscope for various reasons. The most obvious of these is the fact that with electronic data retrieval the major source of gas load is removed from the instrument. An equally important reason is that if any subsequent analysis of the data is to be made, a continuous record on magnetic tape gives a much larger quantity of data and gives it in a form far more satisfactory for subsequent processing.
