Hip-hop remains a viable method for the teaching of radical theory, emancipatory journalism and Africana Media Theory.  Fight Club is an emergent model that builds from existing hip-hop traditions of freetyle battling where critical thought and intellectual challenges of hueristic norms are upended.  This article argues in favor of bringing the Fight Club model into the classroom which allows for heightened student engagement and the inclusion of radical theoretical approaches to the study of mass media, communication and journalism.

Independent mass media are an important part of democracy. Their task is to control whether democratic principles are truly fulfilled in society. Furthermore, their responsibility is to inform the public about important political and socio-political issues. Mass media provide the platform for bigger citizen participation but also for fun and education. The aim of this article is to characterize the functions of mass media in modern democracies according to two types of sources – ones from scholars which focus on the relationship between mass media and democracy and others from scholars that focus on mass media theory and relationship of mass media with percipients. By the method of analysis it was concluded that the most important function of mass media in both types of sources was to provide information. However, other functions appear in a number of publications as well, e.g., mass media as a watchdog or as a platform to exchange opinions and ideas.

The purpose of this article is to describe how public diplomacy is carried out by the Samosir Regency Government through the festival Samosir Music International 2018. The concepts used in this article are the three dimensions of public diplomacy by Joseph Nye; Soft Power; and Sub-Actors national in Public Diplomacy. This research used qualitative research methods. This research found that festival Samosir Music International 2018 had utilizied the role of mass media as a daily communication. In order to create more efficient and targeted communication, the Samosir Regency Government had conducted a series of events and the Indonesian music community as a strategic communication medium. In the end, the relationships between related actors, such as national and international music communities, artists, and media partners were the supporters of the creation of sustainable long-term Relationships.  Artikel ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan diplomasi publik yang dilakukan Pemerintah Kabupetan Samosir melalui festival Samosir Music International 2018. Konsep yang digunakan ialah: tiga dimensi publik oleh Joseph Nye (Komunikasi Sehari-hari, Komunikasi Strategis, dan Pembangunan Hubungan Jangka Panjang), Soft Power, dan Aktor Sub-nasional dalam Diplomasi Publik. Artikel ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif. Artikel ini menemukan bahwa festival Samosir Music International tahun 2018 memanfaatkan peran media massa sebagai media komunikasi sehari-hari. Demi menciptakan komunikasi yang lebih efisien dan terarah, Pemerintah Kabupaten Samosir melakukan rangkaian acara dan para komunitas musik Indonesia sebagai media komunikasi strategis. Pada akhirnya, hubungan yang terjalin atara aktor-aktor terkait, seperti para komunitas musik nasional maupun internasional, artis, dan media partner yang menjadi pendukung terciptanya pembangunan hubungan jangka panjang yang berkesinambungan

Information warfare is a type of strategic communication realized through models of power such as soft and sharp power. Investigation provides evidence sustaining the theoretical framework and premise that the essential models of power are not just the ability, capability and intent, but also the means, method or technique of both states and non-state actors. The example of a dispute between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, from December 2017 to March 2018, shows Israel wielding soft power and Hamas wielding sharp power. This article reviews the models of power, then uses the methodology of the narrative and counter-narrative of Israel and Hamas to show their information warfare campaign. Hamas, a non-state actor, succeeded in gaining sympathy, but was unable to utilize this to further any other objectives. Winning an information battle by soft or by sharp power does not mean that the conflict is over. The conclusion shows that non-state actors, e.g. Hamas, that prioritize control over openness are deficient in soft power projection, so use sharp power to create distraction by the key attributes of expression and manipulation of mass media and public sensitivities, rather than by the attraction and persuasion (soft power) used by states, e.g. Israel. In both, all that is required is to instil a perception, even without facts, in the minds of the audience, which includes global leaders, the mass population and media outlets.

Most organizations face crisis situations that jeopardize the trust of their stakeholders. Crisis communication has become one of the most prominent areas both in practice and in public relations research. This study presents a quantitative analysis of recent scientific research in crisis communication to assess the situation and discover the main current advances in the area. Journal articles from six prominent international databases were selected: Proquest Research Library, ABI/ Inform Collection, EBSCOhost Academic Search Complete, EBSCOhost Business Source Complete. EBSCOhost Communication & Mass Media Complete and Elsevier’s Science Direct Journals Complete. Specifically, a total of 143 scientific articles published between 2008 and 2018 were collected and analyzed from six international peer-reviewed journals specialized in public relations and crisis communication, as well as the main crisis management journals included in the Web of Science and Scopus: Public Relations Review, Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management, Corporate Communications, Journal of Public Relations Research, Journal of Communication Management and International Journal of Strategic Communication. The review of these texts led to the establishment of five hypotheses corresponding to the six stated objectives. Content analysis was used as the quantitative technique, focusing on the following elements: themes, theories, methods, results, and geocultural characteristics of the authors. The results reveal the research trends in the area over the last decade. Resumen La mayoría de las organizaciones se enfrentan a situaciones de crisis que ponen en peligro la confianza de sus grupos de interés. La comunicación de crisis se ha convertido en una de las áreas más prominentes tanto en la práctica como en la investigación de relaciones públicas. Este estudio presenta un análisis cuantitativo sobre la investigación científica reciente en comunicación de crisis, con el fin de recoger el estado y los principales avances actuales en esta área. Para ello, se han seleccionado artículos de revistas presentes en seis bases de datos internacionales destacadas: ProQuest Research Library, ABI/Inform Collection, EBSCOhost Academic Search Complete, EBSCOhost Business Source Complete, EBSCOhost Communication & Mass Media Complete y Elsevier ScienceDirect Journals Complete. En concreto, se han recogido y analizado 143 artículos científicos publicados entre 2008 y 2018 en seis revistas internacionales revisadas por pares referentes de relaciones públicas y comunicación de crisis, así como la principal de gestión de crisis, incluidas en las bases de datos de evaluación Journal Citation Reports (JCR) y Scopus-CiteScore: Public relations review, Journal of contingencies and crisis management, Corporate communications, Journal of public relations research, Journal of communication management e International journal of strategic communication. La revisión de los textos ha desembocado en el establecimiento de cinco preguntas de investigación, correspondientes a seis objetivos. La técnica cuantitativa empleada ha sido el análisis de contenido, que se ha enfocado sobre los siguientes elementos: temas, teorías, métodos, resultados y características geo-culturales de los autores. Los resultados muestran las tendencias investigadoras del área en la última década.

Abstract The society is in a turmoil neither because globalization, high technology or immigration crises, but rather from the race of regional (China and Russia) or world power (US) to develop a new strategies to influence the countries. Europe is not bypassed by these phenomena because Russia as a regional actor is trying to create new sphere of influence at its periphery (especially in Baltic States, Poland and Romania). Romania, as NATO and European Union member, is one of the Russia’s targets not only because geographically it is in the Russia’s proximity, but because it is an area of American’s interests. Russia is developing a real hybrid war, using all the line of effort: political, economical, but specially the social one. The social field is covered by propaganda, promoted by mass-media, as a tool of political power. To counter-attack Russia’s hybrid war, NATO decided, at the Warsaw Summit to develop some operational lines, one is being strategic communication and the second is related with social resilience. The political, administrative and educational institutions are asked to apply this strategy, to find the way to educate people (almost via mass-media) in what is resilience and more important how it works when it is realized
