This paper presents a finite element (FE) modeling of the nanoindentation test of sapphire, in which the finite element method was employed to study the mechanical characteristic of sapphire under the nanoindentation process. The results demonstrated that the nanoindentation FE models were able to simulate the indentation loading-unloading curves of the sapphire. The load and unload displacement curves of the simulation and experiment results can match with each other well, and then the properties used in the simulation should be the actual properties of the sapphire. The Mises stress field distribution of the sapphire sample was calculated to reveal the alteration from elastic region to plastic region, which are useful for indentifying the ductile to brittle change in the sapphire abrasive process.

JAMK model, developed as part of RFSR-project “VADPsheets”, was applied to analyse different time temperature cycles from industrial time temperature cycle. The results of numerical simulation are compared with experimentally determined mechanical properties and microstructures. By distinguishing of recrystallized ferrite, ferrite after transformation, tempered martensite, bainite and martensite can be explained the experimentally obtained mechanical properties. The results of simulation can be used to optimizing the properties and to generate a better understanding of process parameters.

Remarkable Agreement

Vibration modes and damping behaviour of a Portland cement-based, fibre-reinforced composite, were evaluated experimentally and the results compared to computer simulations performed based on the measured properties of the composite. The remarkable agreement between simulation and experiment demonstrates the feasibility of producing Hi-Tech cement-based materials for non-conventional applications.

Aim to improve mechanical properties of the casting aluminum components, a novel process that combined squeeze casting with local forging was proposed. THERCAST® and FORGE® were used to simulate the combined forming process of the automobile control arm. The effects of pouring rate, forging temperature and T6 heat treatment on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of the samples formed by this combined process were investigated. The results showed that the pouring rate and forging temperature have a negligible effect on microstructure of those samples. The combined process of squeeze casting and forging could obviously refine microstructure, eliminate porosity and improve micro-hardness. After T6 heat treatment, the Si particles were dramatically spheroidized, and the micro-hardness was improved.

Abstract Micro-grooves with special structure can reduce the surface friction resistance. Rolling method can be used to form micro-grooves on metal surface efficiently. However, the micro grooves formed by this plastic forming method still had some defects, which had a serious negative impact on the drag reduction and mechanical properties of the micro grooves. Therefore, it is of great significance to optimize the multi pass rolling process to avoid the micro-groove defects. In this paper, a series of analysis on the microstructure, strain and material displacement of micro-grooves were carried out to explain the causes of micro groove defects. It was found that the overall extension of the plate has an adverse effect on the formation of micro-grooves and the hole types of the roller were optimized accordingly. The results of simulation and experiment showed that the optimized roller could produce the designed micro-groove, which perfectly avoided the generation of micro defects.
