With the instruction of the high resolution sequence stratigraphy and sedimentology theory, and the comprehensive application of 11 wells core, more than 800 mud logging and log data, high resolution sequence stratigraphic characteristics research in the XII Group of the Member III of Qing Shankou Formation in the Qianan oilfield has been finished. The results show that the study area can be divided into one middle-term base level cycle and five short-term base level cycles. The only sequence structure of middle term cycle is (B type) and the short term cycle mainly consists of B types meanwhile there are small mounts of upward deepening structures (A type) and symmetric structures (C type). Based on the classification of base-level cycles, fine stratigraphic correlation is conducted by using isochronous cycle correlations. In addition, 15 high resolution sequence stratigraphic frameworks are established which unify the study area and provide the solid geological basis for the sandstone distribution, the identification of mainly oil-bearing sand bodies and potential oil reservoirs.

AbstractThe scientific program is presented as well a the abstracts of the contributions. An extended account is published in “The Ultraviolet Universe: stars from birth to death” (Ed. Gómez de Castro) published by the Editorial Complutense de Madrid (UCM), that can be accessed by electronic format through the website of the Network for UV Astronomy (www.ucm.es/info/nuva).There are five telescopes currently in orbit that have a UV capability of some description. At the moment, only FUSE provides any medium- to high-resolution spectroscopic capability. GALEX, the XMM UV-Optical Telescope (UVOT) and the Swift. UVOT mainly delivers broad-band imaging, but with some low-resolution spectroscopy using grisms. The primary UV spectroscopic capability of HST was lost when the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph failed in 2004, but UV imaging is still available with the HST-WFPC2 and HST-ACS instruments.With the expected limited lifetime of sl FUSE, UV spectroscopy will be effectively unavailable in the short-term future. Even if a servicing mission of HST does go ahead, to install COS and repair STIS, the availability of high-resolution spectroscopy well into the next decade will not have been addressed. Therefore, it is important to develop new missions to complement and follow on from the legacy of FUSE and HST, as well as the smaller imaging/low resolution spectroscopy facilities. This contribution presents an outline of the UV projects, some of which are already approved for flight, while others are still at the proposal/study stage of their development.This contribution outlines the main results from Joint Discussion 04 held during the IAU General Assembly in Prague, August 2006, concerning the rationale behind the needs of the astronomical community, in particular the stellar astrophysics community, for new UV instrumentation. Recent results from UV observations were presented and future science goals were laid out. These goals will lay the framework for future mission planning.

Background: Deceleration Capacity (DC) derived from 24-hour Holter recordings is a strong predictor of mortality in patients after acute myocardial infarction (MI). This prospective cohort study investigates the predictive power of DC derived from short-term recordings. Methods: 938 survivors of acute MI (age ≤80 years, sinus rhythm) were included. Within one week after index infarction, 30-min high resolution ECGs (1600Hz, supine position and resting conditions) as well as 24h-Holter recordings were performed. Short-term DC (DCs) and long-term DC (DCl) were calculated according to the previously published technology. Primary endpoint was death from any cause at two years. Multivariate Cox-regression analyses were adjusted for LVEF ≤30% and clinical covariates. Results: During the 2-year follow-up, 36 patients (3.8%) died. Both, DCs and DCl were strong predictors of death with areas under the receiver-operator characteristics curves of 76.3% and 77.8%, respectively (p<0.0001). DCs was significantly correlated with DCl (r=0.7, p<0.0001). After adjustment for LVEF, presence of diabetes mellitus, advanced age and history of a previous MI, DCs (≤2.5ms) remained a highly significant predictor of death (Table ). Conclusion: DC derived from high-resolution short-term ECGs is a strong and significant predictor of death in post-infarction patients. The HRTS (High Resolution Telescope and Spectrograph) instrument is a high spectral (0.05 Å) and spatial (<1 arc sec) resolution spectrograph with a slit length of 900 arc sec on the solar disk (see Bartoe and Brueckner 1975, 1978). HRTS contains in addition a double grating, zero dispersion broadband spectroheliograph which images the spectrograph slit jaw plate (see Cook et al. 1983). The central wavelength is tunable by changing the grating geometry. Hα images are also photographed from the slit jaw plate image. HRTS has been flown four times as a rocket payload, and will fly in April 1985 as one of the solar experiments aboard Spacelab 2. The four rocket flights of the HRTS program have each been customized for a particular scientific objective. For the fourth flight, because the original hardware was utilized as the basis of the Spacelab HRTS, the opportunity was used to design and build a new rocket HRTS instrument specialized for observations at the solar limb. In this configuration the photographic speed was increased, a new curved slit was fabricated, and the spectroheliograph was modified for limb observations. The scientific observing program was a study of structure and short term temporal evolution at the limb, with a comparison of quiet and coronal hole areas.

The RV Tauri stars are semiregular pulsating variables located in the brightest part of the Cepheid II instability strip. They have a characteristic light curve of alternating deep and shallow minima. A subset of the RV Tauri stars (the RVb subclass) exhibit long-term (500 to 2600 day) light and radial velocity variations. Although it is well established that the short-term variations are due to pulsations, the long-term behaviour is not well understood.BVRI photometry and high-resolution spectra of U Mon (the brightest member of the RVb subclass) were obtained at the Mt John University Observatory (MJUO) between 1990 Aug and 1994 May. The light and colour curves obtained clearly show the long-term variation in U Mon (Fig. 1(a) and (b)). The reddest colours occur slightly later than the long-term minimum in the light curve. The short-term light and colour variations are ‘damped’ at the long-term minimum.

For more than half a century, microfossils–especially foraminifera–have been widely used as stratigraphic markers and paleoenvironmental indicators. Although increasing emphasis has been placed on their use in high-resolution paleoclimate studies, the time-scales involved in most microfossil-based stratigraphic investigations have remained relatively coarse (hundreds-of-thousands to millions of years). My intent herein is to try to come to grips with the interplay between time-averaging of benthic foraminiferal assemblages and stratigraphic resolution, and the implications for recognition of short-term physical and biological processes. These sorts of considerations deserve much closer scrutiny as the applied Earth sciences continue to move from a base of resource exploration and exploitation to one of paleoclimate modelling and ecosystem management (Martin, 1991; Corliss, 1993). The potential stratigraphic and paleoenvironmental resolution of foraminiferal assemblages is assessed using concepts derived from the age analysis of deep-sea assemblages.
