AbstractAnalogical reasoning plays an important role in design. In particular, cross-domain analogies appear to be important in innovative and creative design. However, making cross-domain analogies is hard and often requires abstractions common to the source and target domains. Recent work in case-based design suggests that generic mechanisms are one type of abstractions useful in adapting past designs. However, one important yet unexplored issue is where these generic mechanisms come from. We hypothesize that they are acquired incrementally from design experiences in familiar domains by abstraction over patterns of regularity. Three important issues in abstraction from experiences are what to abstract from an experience, how far to abstract, and what methods to use. In this short paper, we describe how structure-behavior-function models of designs in a familiar domain provide the content, and together with the problem-solving context in which learning occurs, also provide the constraints for learning generic mechanisms from design experiences. In particular, we describe the model-based learning method with a scenario of learning feedback mechanism.

Towards a case-based computational model for the creative design of electromagnetic devicesIn order to explore creativity in design, a computational model based on Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) (an approach to employing old experiences to solve new problems) and other soft computing techniques from machine learning, is proposed in this paper. The new model is able to address the four challenging issues: generation of a design prototype from incomplete requirements, judgment and improvement of system performance given a sparse initial case base library, extraction of critical features from a given feature space, adaptation of retrieved previous solutions to similar problems for deriving a solution to a given design task. The core principle within this model is that different knowledge from various level cases can be explicitly explored and integrated into a practical design process. In order to demonstrate the practical significance of our presented computational model, a case-based design system for EM devices, which is capable of deriving a new design prototype from a real-world device case base with high dimensionality, has been developed.

During product design process, conventional case-based reasoning (CBR) has shown significant applications in coping with new problems by recalling and reusing solutions in old context. However, conventional CBR still lacks effective methods to assist designers in generating creative design solutions of identified problems during modification stage. To make up for this deficiency, an extended CBR (ECBR) method characterized by two retrieval stages is proposed in this paper. The former retrieval stage is aimed to retrieve the most similar source case for design reusing, and the latter one is designed to assist designers in searching for relevant function units to generate creative design ideas for final design solution. A five-tuple knowledge model of product case is presented. It includes both specific design information for design reusing and abstract function units for generating creative design ideas. To effectively organize these case information, a hierarchy knowledge model of case base is established. It consists of case type layer, product case layer, and function unit layer. A corresponding retrieval strategy is presented to deal with different retrieval goals. To improve the performance of ECBR method in modification stage, the substance-attribute-function-cause analysis model and TRIZ tools are integrated together to aid problem analysis and problem-solving of retrieved product case. Finally, a new product conceptual design process is proposed based on ECBR method and the conceptual design of a smokeless barbecue equipment is employed as an example to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of ECBR method.
