The initial postbuckling behavior of axially stiffened cylindrical shells is studied with a view to ascertaining the extent to which various effects such as stringer eccentricity, load eccentricity, and barreling influence the imperfection-sensitivity of these structures to buckling. In most cases, when these effects result in an increase in the buckling load of the perfect structure, they increase its imperfection-sensitivity as well. In some instances, however, barreling can significantly raise the buckling load of the shell while reducing its imperfection-sensitivity. The analysis, which is based on Koiter’s general theory of postbuckling behavior and is made within the context of Ka´rma´n-Donnell-type theory, takes into account nonlinear prebuckling deformations and different boundary conditions.

The free vibration analysis of rotating ring-stiffened cylindrical shells with arbitrary boundary conditions is investigated by employing the Rayleigh–Ritz method. Six sets of characteristic orthogonal polynomials satisfying six classical boundary conditions are constructed directly by employing Gram–Schmidt procedure and then are employed to represent the general formulations for the displacements in any axial mode of free vibrations for shells. Employing those formulations during the Rayleigh–Ritz procedure and based on Sanders' shell theory, the eigenvalue equations related to rotating ring-stiffened cylindrical shells with various classical boundary conditions have been derived. To simulate more general boundaries, the concept of artificial springs is employed and the eigenvalue equations related to free vibration of shells under elastic boundary conditions are derived. By adjusting the stiffness of artificial springs, those equations can be used to investigate the vibrational characteristics of shells with arbitrary boundaries. By comparing with the available analytical results for the ring-stiffened cylindrical shells and the rotating shell without stiffeners, the method proposed in this paper is verified. Strong convergence is also observed from convergence study. Further, the effects of parameters, such as the stiffness of artificial springs, the rotating speed of the ring-stiffened shell, the number of ring stiffeners and the depth to width ratio of ring stiffeners, on the natural frequencies are studied.

A symplectic system is developed for dynamic buckling of cylindrical shells subjected to the combined action of axial impact load, torsion and pressure. By introducing the dual variables, higher-order stability governing equations are transformed into the lower-order Hamiltonian canonical equations. Critical loads and buckling modes are converted to solving for the symplectic eigenvalues and eigensolutions, respectively. Analytical solutions are presented under various combinations of the in-plane and transverse boundary conditions. The results indicated that in-plane boundary conditions have a significant influence on this problem, especially for the simply supported shells. For the shell with a free impact end, buckling loads should become much lower than others. And the corresponding buckling modes appear as a "bell" shape at the free end. In addition, it is much easier to lose stability for the external pressurized shell. The effect of the shell thickness on buckling results is also discussed in detail.

The Stability

The buckling problem of circular cylindrical shells under axial compression, external pressure, and torsion is investigated using a displacement function φ. A governing differential equation for the stability of thin cylindrical shells under combined loading of axial compression, external pressure, and torsion is derived. A method for the solutions of this equation is also presented. The advantage in using the present equation over the customary three differential equations for displacements is that only one trial solution is needed in solving the buckling problems as shown in the paper. Four possible combinations of boundary conditions for a simply supported edge are treated. The case of a cylinder under axial compression is carried out in detail. For two types of simple supported boundary conditions, SS1 and SS2, the minimum critical axial buckling stress is found to be 43.5 percent of the well-known classical value Eh/R3(1−ν2) against the 50 percent of the classical value presently known.

Abstract Free vibrations of rotating cylindrical shells with distributed springs were studied. Based on the Flügge shell theory, the governing equations of rotating cylindrical shells with distributed springs were derived under typical boundary conditions. Multicomponent modal functions were used to satisfy the distributed springs around the circumference. The natural responses were analyzed using the Galerkin method. The effects of parameters, rotation speed, stiffness, and ratios of thickness/radius and length/radius, on natural response were also examined.
