As we take up and are taken up by the new multimedia technologies, we cannot overlook the effects of larger economic trends associated with digitization, downsizing, globalization, privatization and free trade. As educators, we are faced with the challenge of trying to develop virtual education as an extension of a culture of education grounded in human-to-human communication as opposed to the business of education in which information is viewed as a commodity.

The United Nations Organization has completed more than sixty-three years of existence. In these six decades, the world has moved far ahead, and power calculations have changed. The days of bi-polarity ended with the demise of the Cold War. International politics, though unipolar in nature at present, is showing tendencies of multi polarity. Globalization has introduced a new economy of free trade in the world. In this altered international political and economic milieu, demands for restructuring the United Nations, which is guided by an old, mostly outdated charter, have been gaining ground, particularly after the end of the Cold War. But reforming the United Nations would not be very easy, because amending the Charter is extremely difficult, and requires political consensus among members, which is not easily achievable. However, minor reforms that do not require the amendment of the Charter may be introduced to make the United Nations more adept to face today's challenges. The present paper analyzes the problems and prospects of the reform proposals, and shows that there is a gap between the hope and the reality.

Subject Uruguay's political and economic woes. Significance President Tabare Vazquez started his second year in office with conflicts within his own Frente Amplio (FA) coalition, clashes with the opposition and an adverse economic climate. In a context of regional recession, low international demand and a small, sluggish domestic market, he is seeking free trade accords to boost investments and expand export capacity. However, this is at odds with the ideological position of most of the FA. Impacts The government faces a difficult year with no credible chance of reversing negative political and economic trends in the short term. Growth is set to stay well below 2% this year and next. The opposition has yet to benefit from disappointment with the FA.

The economic development generally and specifically in the field of industry and national trade has resulted in a wide variety of goods/ services that can be consumed. In addition, globalization and free trade, supported by telecommunications and Information technology advances have expanded the space for the transaction flows of goods and services across borders of a country. The development and progress of information and technology influence the development of the business transactions as well. E-commerce creates a new economy, which connects manufacturers, sellers, and customers via technology in ways that had never been done before.Along with the widespread of e-commerce transaction, Muslims are wondering whether this kind of transaction is acceptable in Syariah (Islamic Law) perspective. Thus, this paper will discuss about some matters regarding this issue and find the conclusion about this brand new kind of commerce.

Recent literature on regional integration has stressed the key role that emerging trading blocs will have in shaping the world economy of the 21st-century. With the end of the Cold War, policymakers have refocused their attention on economic issues. Economic trends — such as rapid changes in research, technology, capital flow, and trade patterns — have assumed a new importance. Increasing competition in world markets has induced industrialized countries to cluster together in regional economic blocs. This has been the case with the European Community (EC), the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) signatories (the United States, Canada, and Mexico), and possibly Japan and its East Asian neighbors. However, these experiments in regional integration differ appreciably in nature. For instance, the EC explicitly seeks an economic and political union, whereas the NAFTA is simply a free trade area whose goal is the eventual elimination of restrictions on investment flows.

The multimodal nature of human communication has been well established. Yet few empirical studies have systematically examined the widely held belief that this form of perception is facilitated in comparison to unimodal or bimodal perception. In the current experiment we first explored the processing of unimodally presented facial expressions. Furthermore, auditory (prosodic and/or lexical-semantic) information was presented together with the visual information to investigate the processing of bimodal (facial and prosodic cues) and multimodal (facial, lexic, and prosodic cues) human communication. Participants engaged in an identity identification task, while event-related potentials (ERPs) were being recorded to examine early processing mechanisms as reflected in the P200 and N300 component. While the former component has repeatedly been linked to physical property stimulus processing, the latter has been linked to more evaluative “meaning-related” processing. A direct relationship between P200 and N300 amplitude and the number of information channels present was found. The multimodal-channel condition elicited the smallest amplitude in the P200 and N300 components, followed by an increased amplitude in each component for the bimodal-channel condition. The largest amplitude was observed for the unimodal condition. These data suggest that multimodal information induces clear facilitation in comparison to unimodal or bimodal information. The advantage of multimodal perception as reflected in the P200 and N300 components may thus reflect one of the mechanisms allowing for fast and accurate information processing in human communication.
