Nigerian Gas Transportation Network Code NGTNC; Emerging Opportunities for Local Gas Transmission Operations

Abstract Historically, both regulatory and contractual constraints have inhibited the overall optimization of natural gas transmission systems. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) currently supplies gas either as source of fuel or as feedstock to different industries. More local industries are now aware of the advantages and benefits of using gas; hence creating an increase in demand. Recent changes in the regulatory framework and the introduction of the Nigeria Gas Transportation Network Code (NGTNC) to deepen the growth of gas market in the country are however, fostering the pipeline companies into a new competitive position, creating strong incentives as well as opportunities. This work provides a section-by-section summary of the Code for the benefit of those who are passionate about understanding the nuances of the Code and of course makes cogent survey and recommendations, to expedite the success of the Code. In the course of this research, questionnaires were administered and 130 respondents were chosen based on their level of knowledge and experience in the industry ranging from operations, management, regulatory and Gas Associations. Responses were collated and analysed using simple statistical tools, tables, and graphs to identify opportunities. The result of the study illustrates the stakeholder's presumption and commitments in using NGTNC for optimized Gas transmission operations.

Abstract The use of edible flowers (EF) in gastronomy is gaining popularity; however, there is still a lack of information about the factors that most contribute to the acceptance of this product. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the habits associated with the usage of EF in gastronomy in three different countries (Portugal, Slovenia, and Brazil) and also to evaluate the major determinants for those habits. In addition, the level of knowledge was also investigated, particularly with regard to the aspects such as perceived risks of toxicity and pesticides. For that, a questionnaire survey of self-response was carried out on a sample of 559 participants, from the above-mentioned countries. To analyse the data, basic descriptive statistical tools were used combined with crosstabs and chi-square tests. Finally, a tree classification was performed using the classification and regression trees algorithm. The results revealed that, regardless of the country, the participants were familiar with the use of EF in gastronomy. The participants had, in general, already consumed EF, and their use was more popular between the Portuguese participants, being the Brazilian those who used them less. Significant differences were found between the countries in the form of consumption of EF and also in the types of EF consumed. There were also significant differences regarding the reasons for eating EF. The classification analysis showed that the country and the level of education were the major determinants for the consuming habits and knowledge about EF. This study highlighted that eating habits are very dependent on the customs and traditions of each country and helped understanding the factors that most affect the participants’ attitudes towards the consumption and knowledge of EF.

As part of an important project to reinforce the natural gas transmission network, a new pipeline has been constructed to transport natural gas from a major UK LNG storage facility into the national transmission system. The project involved the installation of several sections by trenchless methods, namely auger boring for a number of road crossings and significant lengths of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) beneath railroads, canals and marshland. The installation of pipelines using trenchless techniques such as HDD continues to increase in popularity. The various methods available offer advantages over traditional open cut techniques, in particular much reduced disruption during the construction of road and rail crossings. Furthermore, increased awareness and responsibility towards the environment leads us to seek installation methods that cause the least disruption at the surface and have the least impact to the environment. It was required to assess the proposed crossing designs against acceptable stress limits set out in company specifications and against the requirements of UK design code IGE/TD/1 Edition 4 [1], which requires that ‘additional loads’ such as soil loadings, thermal loads, settlement and traffic loading are accounted for within the stress calculations. However, it does not stipulate the sources of such equations and the pipeline engineer must rely on other methods and published sources of information. This paper presents the method used to analyse those sections of the new pipeline installed by auger boring and HDD focusing on the methods and formulae used to calculate the stresses in the pipeline from all loading sources.
