Summary Numerical simulation of coupled multiphase multicomponent flow and transport in porous media is a crucial tool for understanding and forecasting of complex industrial applications related to the subsurface. The discretized governing equations are highly nonlinear and usually need to be solved with Newton’s method, which corresponds with high computational cost and complexity. With the presence of capillary and gravity forces, the nonlinearity of the problem is amplified even further, which usually leads to a higher numerical cost. A recently proposed operator-based linearization (OBL) approach effectively improves the performance of complex physical modeling by transforming the discretized nonlinear conservation equations into a quasilinear form according to state-dependent operators. These operators are approximated by means of a discrete representation on a uniform mesh in physical parameter space. Continuous representation is achieved through the multilinear interpolation. This approach provides a unique framework for the multifidelity representation of physics in general-purpose simulation. The applicability of the OBL approach was demonstrated for various energy subsurface applications with multiphase flow of mass and heat in the presence of buoyancy and diffusive forces. In this work, the OBL approach is extended for multiphase multicomponent systems with capillarity. Through the comparisons with a legacy commercial simulator using a set of benchmark tests, we demonstrate that the extended OBL scheme significantly improves the computational efficiency with the controlled accuracy of approximation and converges to the results of the conventional continuous approach with an increased resolution of parametrization.

Summary Foam injection is a promising enhanced-oil-recovery (EOR) technology that significantly improves the sweep efficiency of gas injection. Simulation of foam/oil displacement in reservoirs is an expensive process for conventional simulation because of the strongly nonlinear physics, such as multiphase flow and transport with oil/foam interactions. In this work, an operator-based linearization (OBL) approach, combined with the representation of foam by an implicit-texture (IT) model with two flow regimes, is extended for the simulation of the foam EOR process. The OBL approach improves the efficiency of the highly nonlinear foam-simulation problem by transforming the discretized nonlinear conservation equations into a quasilinear form using state-dependent operators. The state-dependent operators are approximated by discrete representation on a uniform mesh in parameter space. The numerical-simulation results are validated by using three-phasefractional-flow theory for foam/oil flow. Starting with an initial guess depending on the fitting of steady-state experimental data with oil, the OBL foam model is regressed to experimental observations using a gradient-optimization technique. A series of numerical validation studies is performed to investigate the accuracy of the proposed approach. The numerical model shows good agreement with analytical solutions at different conditions and with different foam parameters. With finer grids, the resolution of the simulation is better, but at the cost of more expensive computations. The foam-quality scan is accurately fitted to steady-state experimental data, except in the low-quality regime. In this regime, the used IT foam model cannot capture the upward-tilting pressure gradient (or apparent viscosity) contours. 1D and 3D simulation results clearly demonstrate two stages of foam propagation from inlet to outlet, as seen in the computed-tomography (CT) coreflood experiments: weak foam displaces most of the oil, followed by a propagation of stronger foam at lower oil saturation. OBL is a direct method to reduce nonlinearity in complex physical problems, which can significantly improve computational performance. Taking its accuracy and efficiency into account, the data-drivenOBL-based approach could serve as a platform for efficient numerical upscaling to field-scaleapplications.

Median filtering is a commonly used technique in image processing. The main problem of the median filter is its high computational cost (for sorting N pixels, the temporal complexity is O(N·log N), even with the most efficient sorting algorithms). When the median filter must be carried out in real time, the software implementation in general-purpose processorsdoes not usually give good results. This Paper presents an efficient algorithm for median filtering with a 3x3 filter kernel with only about 9 comparisons per pixel using spatial coherence between neighboring filter computations. The basic algorithm calculates two medians in one step and reuses sorted slices of three vertical neighboring pixels. An extension of this algorithm for 2D spatial coherence is also examined, which calculates four medians per step.

In this research work, we investigate precoder designs to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of secure multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems in the presence of an eavesdropper. In general, the secure energy efficiency maximization (SEEM) problem is highly nonlinear and nonconvex and hard to be solved directly. To overcome this difficulty, we employ a branch-and-reduce-and-bound (BRB) approach to obtain the globally optimal solution. Since it is observed that the BRB algorithm suffers from highly computational cost, its globally optimal solution is importantly served as a benchmark for the performance evaluation of the suboptimal algorithms. Additionally, we also develop a low-complexity approach using the well-known zero-forcing (ZF) technique to cancel the wiretapped signal, making the design problem more amenable. Using the ZF based method, we transform the SEEM problem to a concave-convex fractional one which can be solved by applying the combination of the Dinkelbach and bisection search algorithm. Simulation results show that the ZF-based method can converge fast and obtain a sub-optimal EE performance which is closed to the optimal EE performance of the BRB method. The ZF based scheme also shows its advantages in terms of the energy efficiency in comparison with the conventional secrecy rate maximization precoder design.

Block-structured adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) provides the basis for the temporal and spatial discretization strategy for a number of Exascale Computing Project applications in the areas of accelerator design, additive manufacturing, astrophysics, combustion, cosmology, multiphase flow, and wind plant modeling. AMReX is a software framework that provides a unified infrastructure with the functionality needed for these and other AMR applications to be able to effectively and efficiently utilize machines from laptops to exascale architectures. AMR reduces the computational cost and memory footprint compared to a uniform mesh while preserving accurate descriptions of different physical processes in complex multiphysics algorithms. AMReX supports algorithms that solve systems of partial differential equations in simple or complex geometries and those that use particles and/or particle–mesh operations to represent component physical processes. In this article, we will discuss the core elements of the AMReX framework such as data containers and iterators as well as several specialized operations to meet the needs of the application projects. In addition, we will highlight the strategy that the AMReX team is pursuing to achieve highly performant code across a range of accelerator-based architectures for a variety of different applications.

An experimental attitude control algorithm design using prototypes can minimize space mission costs by reducing the number of errors transmitted to the next phase of the project. The Space Mechanics and Control Division (DMC) of INPE is constructing a 3D simulator to supply the conditions for implementing and testing satellite control hardware and software. Satellite large angle maneuver makes the plant highly nonlinear and if the parameters of the system are not well determined, the plant can also present some level of uncertainty. As a result, controller designed by a linear control technique can have its performance and robustness degraded. In this paper the standard LQR linear controller and the SDRE controller associated with an SDRE filter are applied to design a controller for a nonlinear plant. The plant is similar to the DMC 3D satellite simulator where the unstructured uncertainties of the system are represented by process and measurements noise. In the sequel the State-Dependent Riccati Equation (SDRE) method is used to design and test an attitude control algorithm based on gas jets and reaction wheel torques to perform large angle maneuver in three axes. The SDRE controller design takes into account the effects of the plant nonlinearities and system noise which represents uncertainty. The SDRE controller performance and robustness are tested during the transition phase from angular velocity reductions to normal mode of operation with stringent pointing accuracy using a switching control algorithm based on minimum system energy. This work serves to validate the numerical simulator model and to verify the functionality of the control algorithm designed by the SDRE method.

Different types of active materials have been used to actuate origami-inspired self-folding structures. To model the highly nonlinear deformation and material responses, as well as the coupled field equations and boundary conditions of such structures, high-fidelity models such as finite element (FE) models are needed but usually computationally expensive, which makes optimization intractable. In this paper, a computationally efficient two-stage optimization framework is developed as a systematic method for the multi-objective designs of such multifield self-folding structures where the deformations are concentrated in crease-like areas, active and passive materials are assumed to behave linearly, and low- and high-fidelity models of the structures can be developed. In Stage 1, low-fidelity models are used to determine the topology of the structure. At the end of Stage 1, a distance measure [Formula: see text] is applied as the metric to determine the best design, which then serves as the baseline design in Stage 2. In Stage 2, designs are further optimized from the baseline design with greatly reduced computing time compared to a full FEA-based topology optimization. The design framework is first described in a general formulation. To demonstrate its efficacy, this framework is implemented in two case studies, namely, a three-finger soft gripper actuated using a PVDF-based terpolymer, and a 3D multifield example actuated using both the terpolymer and a magneto-active elastomer, where the key steps are elaborated in detail, including the variable filter, metrics to select the best design, determination of design domains, and material conversion methods from low- to high-fidelity models. In this paper, analytical models and rigid body dynamic models are developed as the low-fidelity models for the terpolymer- and MAE-based actuations, respectively, and the FE model of the MAE-based actuation is generalized from previous work. Additional generalizable techniques to further reduce the computational cost are elaborated. As a result, designs with better overall performance than the baseline design were achieved at the end of Stage 2 with computing times of 15 days for the gripper and 9 days for the multifield example, which would rather be over 3 and 2 months for full FEA-based optimizations, respectively. Tradeoffs between the competing design objectives were achieved. In both case studies, the efficacy and computational efficiency of the two-stage optimization framework are successfully demonstrated.

AbstractWe present a concurrent material and structure optimization framework for multiphase hierarchical systems that relies on homogenization estimates based on continuum micromechanics to account for material behavior across many different length scales. We show that the analytical nature of these estimates enables material optimization via a series of inexpensive “discretization-free” constraint optimization problems whose computational cost is independent of the number of hierarchical scales involved. To illustrate the strength of this unique property, we define new benchmark tests with several material scales that for the first time become computationally feasible via our framework. We also outline its potential in engineering applications by reproducing self-optimizing mechanisms in the natural hierarchical system of bamboo culm tissue.

When generating multirow intersection cuts for mixed-integer linear optimization problems, an important practical question is deciding which intersection cuts to use. Even when restricted to cuts that are facet defining for the corner relaxation, the number of potential candidates is still very large, especially for instances of large size. In this paper, we introduce a subset of intersection cuts based on the infinity norm that is very small, works for relaxations having arbitrary number of rows and, unlike many subclasses studied in the literature, takes into account the entire data from the simplex tableau. We describe an algorithm for generating these inequalities and run extensive computational experiments in order to evaluate their practical effectiveness in real-world instances. We conclude that this subset of inequalities yields, in terms of gap closure, around 50% of the benefits of using all valid inequalities for the corner relaxation simultaneously, but at a small fraction of the computational cost, and with a very small number of cuts. Summary of Contribution: Cutting planes are one of the most important techniques used by modern mixed-integer linear programming solvers when solving a variety of challenging operations research problems. The paper advances the state of the art on general-purpose multirow intersection cuts by proposing a practical and computationally friendly method to generate them.
