Tracing is a popular method for evaluating, investigating, and modeling the performance of today's storage systems. Tracing has become crucial with the increase in complexity of modern storage applications/systems, that are manipulating an ever-increasing amount of data and are subject to extreme performance requirements. There exists many tracing tools focusing either on the user-level or the kernel-level, however we observe the lack of a unified tracer targeting both levels: this prevents a comprehensive understanding of modern applications' storage performance profiles. In this paper, we present EZIOTracer, a unified I/O tracer for both (Linux) kernel and user spaces, targeting data intensive applications. EZIOTracer is composed of a userland as well as a kernel space tracer, complemented with a trace analysis framework able to merge the output of the two tracers, and in particular to relate user-level events to kernel-level ones, and vice-versa. On the kernel side, EZIOTracer relies on eBPF to offer safe, low-overhead, low memory footprint, and flexible tracing capabilities. We demonstrate using FIO benchmark the ability of EZIOTracer to track down I/O performance issues by relating events recorded at both the kernel and user levels. We show that this can be achieved with a relatively low overhead that ranges from 2% to 26% depending on the I/O intensity.

This article, written by JPT Technology Editor Chris Carpenter, contains highlights of paper SPE 203335, “Using MSE and Downhole Drilling Dynamics in Achieving a Record Extended-Reach Well Offshore Abu Dhabi,” by Nashat Abbas and Jamal Al Nokhatha, ADNOC, and Luis Salgado, Halliburton, et al., prepared for the 2020 Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference, Abu Dhabi, held virtually 9–12 November. The paper has not been peer reviewed. Complex extended-reach-drilling (ERD) wells often present challenges with regard to geological aspects of data requirement and transmittal, reactive geosteering response times, and accuracy of well placement. Such scenarios may require innovative approaches in Middle East carbonate reservoirs. The objective of the complete paper is to illustrate that, by assessing the details of reservoir geology and key operational markers relevant for best practices, drilling approaches can be customized for each reservoir or scenario. Reservoir Background and Geology The planned reservoir section is a single horizontal of approximately 25,000-ft lateral length at a spacing of 250 m from adjacent injectors. The well was drilled from an artificial island. Field A, a shallow-water oil field, is the second-largest offshore field and the fourth-largest field in the world. Horizontal drilling was introduced in 1989, and an extensive drilling campaign has been implemented since then using steerable drilling technologies. This study is concerned only with wells drilled to develop Reservoir B in Field A, which contributes to the main part of initial oil in place and production. The thick limestone reservoir is subdivided into six porous layers, labeled from shallow to deep as A, B, C, D, E, and F. Each porous layer is separated by thin, low-porosity stylolites. The reservoir sublayer B, consisting of approximately 18-ft-thick calcareous limestones, was selected as the target zone for the 25,420-ft horizontal section. ERD, constructed on artificial islands, began on 2014 with a measured depth (MD)/true vertical depth (TVD) ratio approaching 2.2:1 or 2.4:1. A recent ERD well, Well A, was drilled at the beginning of 2020 with a MD/TVD ratio of 5:1. This value is a clear indication of progressively increasing challenges since the start of the project. Mechanical specific energy (MSE) has long been used to evaluate and enhance the rate of penetration (ROP); however, its use as an optimization tool in ERD wells has not been equally significant. This may have been mostly because of historical use of surface-measured parameters, which do not necessarily indicate the energy required to destroy the rock, particularly in ERD wells. Using optimization tools as part of the bottomhole assembly (BHA) downhole close to the bit provides actual weight-on-bit (WOB) and torque-on-bit (TOB) applied to the drilling bit to destroy the rock and, thus, results in more-representative MSE measurements to optimize drilling parameters and ROP in ERD wells.

Given the media frenzy over Hillary Clinton's unsuccessful presidential bid, and the ensuing questions about the state of feminism, it seems a serendipitous moment to feature two pieces—written by the women who conceived and performed them—that offer very different but complementary takes on agency, identity, and the conflation of the public and private as one's body becomes the locus of the gaze. Petra Kuppers's dramaturgical meditation on her experiences as part of Tiresias, a disability culture performance project, investigates erotics, change, mythology, and identity. A collaboration between photographers, writers, and dancers, the project, occurring over six months in 2007, posits the body as the site at which myth might be reshaped and movement might become poetry. Lián Amaris critically analyzes her feminist public performance event Fashionably Late for the Relationship, which took place over three days in July 2007 on the Union Square traffic island in New York City. Informed by Judith Butler's citational production of gender, the piece focused on exposing and critiquing the marked visibility of gender construction and maintenance within an extreme performance paradigm.

The evolution of ballistic tongue projection in plethodontid salamanders—a high-performance and thermally robust musculoskeletal system—is ideal for examining how the components required for extreme performance in animal movement are assembled in evolution. Our comparative data on whole-organism performance measured across a range of temperatures and the musculoskeletal morphology of the tongue apparatus were examined in a phylogenetic framework and combined with data on muscle contractile physiology and neural control. Our analysis reveals that relatively minor evolutionary changes in morphology and neural control have transformed a muscle-powered system with modest performance and high thermal sensitivity into a spring-powered system with extreme performance and functional robustness in the face of evolutionarily conserved muscle contractile physiology. Furthermore, these changes have occurred in parallel in both major clades of this largest family of salamanders. We also find that high-performance tongue projection that exceeds available muscle power and thermal robustness of performance coevolve, both being emergent properties of the same elastic-recoil mechanism. Among the taxa examined, we find muscle-powered and fully fledged elastic systems with enormous performance differences, but no intermediate forms, suggesting that incipient elastic mechanisms do not persist in evolutionary time. A growing body of data from other elastic systems suggests that similar coevolution of traits may be found in other ectothermic animals with high performance, particularly those for which thermoregulation is challenging or ecologically costly.
