The optimal strategy for assessing the ischemic significance of intermediate coronary stenoses with adenosine-induced fractional flow reserve (FFR) and instantaneous wave-free ratio (iFR) is still debated. Few studies have previously assessed the impact of age on FFR and iFR, which was the aim of our study. Patients undergoing FFR and iFR evaluation for intermediate (40%-70%) coronary lesions were included and divided according to age. Fractional flow reserve was performed by intracoronary boluses of adenosine (60-1440 μg). Instantaneous wave-free ratio was automatically calculated. Among 148 patients undergoing FFR measurement of 166 lesions, 45.3% were ≥70 years. Elderly patients had higher minimal lumen diameter ( P = .03). We also observed a linear relationship between iFR and FFR independently of age. Fractional flow reserve values were higher in the elderly patients, whereas iFR was not related to age. A total of 33 lesions had a positive iFR with no difference for age (17.3% vs 22%, P = .56), while FFR <0.80 was more infrequent in the elderly patients (17.1% vs 34.8%, P = .02). In intermediate coronary stenoses, iFR and FFR correlation is unaffected by age. Fractional flow reserve is higher in the elderly patients, whereas iFR is less affected by age. Future large-scale studies are needed to define whether iFR should be the preferred choice in elderly patients.

Summary Rate-time decline-curve analysis is the technique most extensively used by engineers in the evaluation of well performance, production forecasting, and prediction of original fluids in place. Results from this analysis have key implications for economic decisions surrounding asset acquisition and investment planning in hydrocarbon production. State-of-the-art natural gas decline-curve analysis heavily relies on the use of liquid (oil) type curves combined with the concepts of pseudopressure and pseudotime and/or empirical curve fitting of rate-time production data using the Arps hyperbolic decline model. In this study, we present the analytical decline equation that models production from gas wells producing at constant pressure under boundary-dominated flow (BDF) which neither employs empirical concepts from Arps decline models nor necessitates explicit calculations of pseudofunctions. New-generation analytical decline equations for BDF are presented for gas wells producing at (1) full production potential under true wide-open decline and (2) partial production potential under less than wide-open decline. The proposed analytical model enables the generation of type-curves for the analysis of natural gas reservoirs producing at constant pressure and under BDF for both full and partial production potential. A universal, single-line gas type curve is shown to be straightforwardly derived for any gas well producing at its full potential under radial BDF. The resulting type curves can be used to forecast boundary-dominated performance and predict original gas in place without (1) iterative procedures, (2) prior knowledge of reservoir storage properties or geological data, and (3) pseudopressure or pseudotime transformations of production data obtained in the field.

The idea that birth-order position has a lasting impact on personality has been discussed for the past 100 years. Recent large-scale studies have indicated that birth-order effects on the Big Five personality traits are negligible. In the current study, we examined a variety of more narrow personality traits in a large representative sample ( n = 6,500–10,500 in between-family analyses; n = 900–1,200 in within-family analyses). We used specification-curve analysis to assess evidence for birth-order effects across a range of models implementing defensible yet arbitrary analytical decisions (e.g., whether to control for age effects or to exclude participants on the basis of sibling spacing). Although specification-curve analysis clearly confirmed the previously reported birth-order effect on intellect, we found no meaningful effects on life satisfaction, locus of control, interpersonal trust, reciprocity, risk taking, patience, impulsivity, or political orientation. The lack of meaningful birth-order effects on self-reports of personality was not limited to broad traits but also held for more narrowly defined characteristics.
