Abstract Heath, M. R. 2007. The consumption of zooplankton by early life stages of fish in the North Sea. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 64: 1650–1663. Previous work has shown that during the 1970s, fish and carnivorous macrozooplankton together consumed ∼22 gC m−2 year−1 of mesozooplankton, principally copepods. Consumption declined to ∼17 gC m−2 year−1 during the 1990s, mainly because of a reduction in fish production. The zooplankton production required to meet this demand seems to be approximately accounted for by estimates of new primary production, but there are additional sinks for zooplankton production attributable to predation by, for example, gelatinous species. Additionally, the consumption of zooplankton by early life stages of fish is difficult to assess and could be larger than implied by the earlier analysis. Here, the role of fish early life stages in zooplankton consumption is re-assessed, and found to be approximately double that previously estimated. Some 28% of the zooplankton consumption by fish is now estimated to be attributable to early life stages, resulting in an estimate of zooplankton consumption by the fish community as a whole 14% higher. Taken overall, the consumption of zooplankton production by fish and other planktivorous predators is now estimated to be 19–25 gC m−2 year−1.

<p>The aim of this paper is to explore the specific and symbolic role of the sea in the whole work of Jean Muno (1924-1988), not only in his fantastic narratives. By including in this study some unknown but significant texts of this French-speaking Belgian writer, we will examine the reasons for the recurrence of the maritime landscape. We will highlight the strong links between the fictional creations of the author and his experience on different coasts - especially of the North Sea littoral - during his stays in holiday resorts (illustrated in the photos).</p>

Today Norway is a highly developed country with a predominantly service sector in the economic structure. However, oil continues to play a major role in the life of the state and society as one third of state revenues is based on oil resources, while export of raw materials totals more than a half of the country's overall export. However, it is not quite possible to cover the entire oil sector in Norway within the scope of one piece of work due to the differences in the characteristics of each of the three sources of the country's oil. In this context, the resources of the Norwegian and Barents Seas are associated with the problems of the Arctic and the Arctic law. At the same time, the North Sea is the most regulated area, besides it is the so called "homeland" of the oil production in Norway. Thus, this paper analyzes the role of the North Sea oil in the economy of Norway, which is the basis of its economic prosperity. Due to its oil revenues, Norway was once able to build a welfare state. Also the unique system of accumulation of oil revenues, which is reflected in the functioning of the Government Pension Fund of Norway, is a relevant issue as well. The article deals with the emergence of the oil industry in the country from a historical perspective, and analyzes its current state, including a detailed analysis of the existing fields and pipelines. Furthermore, the authors propose the estimation of state revenues from the oil production in the North Sea.
