Probabilistic Aggregation of Oil and Gas Field Resource Estimates and Project Portfolio Analysis

Summary Probabilistic aggregation and dependency estimation are essential in portfolio methods, production forecasting, and resource estimation. The use of arithmetic addition understates the true value of the resource estimates within a portfolio of fields. Potentially, this could result in deferral of a project, or loss of lucrative business and commercial opportunities, such as project investment, facilitysizing decisions, or incremental gas-supply commitments. A statistically robust method for aggregation of resource estimates that appropriately uses expert opinion is presented in this paper. Using two integrated-project examples, this paper introduces new methods for (1) probabilistic aggregation of the resource estimates for multiple fields and (2) estimating a measure of dependency between the resource estimates of individual fields. The new analytical method for probabilistic aggregation is based on multivariate skew-normal (MSN) distributions, which can model a wide range of skewness through a shape parameter and are used heavily in financial and actuarial applications. In studies of the fields in which the multiple-realizations approach is used as a basis for the uncertainty framework, tornado diagrams are generated routinely to describe the dependence of the field resources on reservoir parameters. The improved method for evaluating measures of dependency between the resource estimates within a portfolio of fields uses these tornado diagrams as a basis. Incorporating the expertise and knowledge of geologists and petroleum engineers is a critical element of the method. These methods for probabilistic aggregation and estimating dependencies were developed within the context of the oil industry, but their use is not limited to the oil industry. They are general and can be used in other probabilistic-aggregation problems. Application of these techniques requires limited time and effort, compared to individual-field studies, and can have a profound impact on the uncertainty range of the total resources for the portfolio of fields.

To date, the development of the oil and gas industry can be characterized by a decline in the efficiency of the development of hydrocarbon deposits. High water cut-off is often caused by water breaking through a highly permeable reservoir interval, which often leads to the shutdown of wells due to the unprofitability of their further operation. In this paper, the application of straightening the profile log technology for injection wells of the Muravlenkovsky oil and gas field is justified. In the course of this work, the results of field studies are systematized. The reasons for water breakthrough were determined, and the main ways of filtration of the injected water were identified using tracer surveys. The use of CL-systems technology based on polyacrylamide and chromium acetate is recommended. The forecast of the estimated additional oil produced was made.

Abstract When surfactant is used as emulsifier, the stability of emulsion is often greatly reduced with the influence of reservoir conditions (temperature, pressure, salinity, etc.), which shortens the validity period of emulsion. Pickering emulsion has a wide range of applications in the oil and gas field due to its advantages of good stability and easy regulation. In this article, the formation, stabilization mechanism, and influencing factors of Pickering emulsions were introduced, and the application status and prospects of Pickering emulsions in oil and gas field were summarized. It was pointed out that Pickering emulsion has many advantages and important research value when applied in deep strata and complicated reservoirs. It is expected that this article can effectively reflect the application value of Pickering emulsion in oil and gas field and promote the application of Pickering emulsion in petroleum industry.

The development of the Hibernia offshore oil and gas field is one of the largest ventures undertaken by the oil industry in Canada. It is also the first field to be developed on Canada's Grand Banks. Located in waters adjacent to the east coast of Canada's least developed, its discovery led to hope of prosperity for Newfoundland. The project offers the prospects of employment royalties and development of other offshore fields. With these prospects in mind, federal and provincial governments have provided substantial inducements to a consortium of oil companies to ensure that it would develop the field. This paper reviews Hibernia's controversial past and assesses the extent to which it may serve as a catalyst for economic recovery in Newfoundland.

Internationally the research of low permeability oil reservoir is a difficult point in the exploration and development of oil and gas field. This thesis, based on the research methods of low permeability reservoirs at home and abroad, summaries several major problems encountered in the process of low permeability oil exploration and development under the current technical conditions as well as the corresponding, but more effective technical measures that need to be constantly improved. And that exploration and development of low permeability of the reservoir will be the main battle field for some time in the future of oil exploration and development.
