Three-dimensional wave propagation in an elastic half space is considered. The half space is traction free on half its boundary, while the remaining part of the boundary is free of shear traction and is constrained against normal displacement by a smooth, rigid barrier. A time-harmonic surface wave, traveling on the traction free part of the surface, is obliquely incident on the edge of the barrier. The amplitude and the phase of the resulting reflected surface wave are determined by means of Laplace transform methods and the Wiener-Hopf technique. Wave propagation in an elastic half space in contact with two rigid, smooth barriers is then considered. The barriers are arranged so that a strip on the surface of uniform width is traction free, which forms a wave guide for surface waves. Results of the surface wave reflection problem are then used to geometrically construct dispersion relations for the propagation of unattenuated guided surface waves in the guiding structure. The rate of decay of body wave disturbances, localized near the edges of the guide, is discussed.

Current design procedures for complicated three-dimensional structural components with component interactions may not necessarily result in optimum designs. The wrist pin end design of the connecting rod with an interference fit is governed by the stress singularity in the region where the wrist pin breaks contact with the connecting rod. Similar problems occur in a wide variety of structural components which involve interference fits. For a better understanding of the problems associated with obtaining optimum designs for this important class of structural interaction only the design problems associated with the wrist pin end of the rod are addressed in this study. This paper demonstrates a procedure for designing a functional and minimum weight wrist pin end of an automobile engine connecting rod with an interference fit wrist pin. Current procedures for Finite Element Method (FEM) model generation in complicated three-dimensional components are very time consuming especially in the presence of stress singularities. Furthermore the iterative nature of the design process makes the process of developing an optimum design very expensive. This design procedure uses a generic modeler to generate the FEM model based on the values of the design variables. It uses the NASTRAN finite element program for structural analysis. A stress concentration factor approach is used to obtain realistic stresses in the region of the stress singularity. For optimization, the approximate optimization strategy in the COPES/CONMIN program is used to generate an approximate design surface, determine the design sensitivities for constrained function minimization and obtain the optimum design. This proposed design strategy is fully automated and requires only an initial design to generate the optimum design. It does not require analysis code modifications to compute the design sensitivities and requires very few costly NASTRAN analyses. The connecting rod design problem was solved as an eight design variable problem with five constraints. A weight reduction of nearly 27 percent was achieved over an existing design and required only thirteen NASTRAN analyses. It is felt that this design strategy can be effectively used in an engineering environment to generate optimum designs of complicated three-dimensional components.

Exact solutions to the three-dimensional (3D) contact problem of a rigid flat-ended circular cylindrical indenter punching onto a transversely isotropic thermoporoelastic half-space are presented. The couplings among the elastic, hydrostatic, and thermal fields are considered, and two different sets of boundary conditions are formulated for two different cases. We use a concise general solution to represent all the field variables in terms of potential functions and transform the original problem to the one that is mathematically expressed by integral (or integro-differential) equations. The potential theory method is extended and applied to exactly solve these integral equations. As a consequence, all the physical quantities of the coupling fields are derived analytically. To validate the analytical solutions, we also simulate the contact behavior by using the finite element method (FEM). An excellent agreement between the analytical predictions and the numerical simulations is obtained. Further attention is also paid to the discussion on the obtained results. The present solutions can be used as a theoretical reference when practically applying microscale image formation techniques such as thermal scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and electrochemical strain microscopy (ESM).

This paper presents a new method of contact plasticity analysis based on Galerkin vectors to solve the eigenstresses due to eigenstrain. The influence coefficients relating eigenstrains to eigenstresses thus can be divided into four terms the one due to the eigenstrains in the full space, others due to the mirrored eigenstrains in the mirror half space. Each term can be solved fast and efficient by using the three-dimensional discrete convolution and fast Fourier transform (DC-FFT) or the three-dimensional discrete correlation and fast Fourier transform (DCR-FFT). The new method is used to analyze the contact plastic residual stresses in half space.

The three-dimensional problem of contact between a spherical indenter and a multi-layered structure bonded to an elastic half-space is investigated. The layers and half-space are assumed to be composed of transversely isotropic materials. By the use of Hankel transforms, the mixed boundary value problem is reduced to an integral equation, which is solved numerically to determine the contact stresses and contact region. The interior displacement and stress fields in both the layer and half-space can be calculated from the inverse Hankel transform used with the solved contact stresses prescribed over the contact region. The stress components, which may be related to the contact failure of coatings, are discussed for various coating thicknesses.

The research on the propagation of surface waves has received considerable attention in order to improve the efficiency and natural life of the surface acoustic wave devices, but the investigation on complex Rayleigh waves in functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) is quite limited. In this paper, an improved Laguerre orthogonal function technique is presented to solve the problem of the complex Rayleigh waves in an FGPM half-space, which can obtain not only the solution of purely real values but also that of purely imaginary and complex values. The three-dimensional dispersion curves are generated in complex space to explore the influence of the gradient coefficients. The displacement amplitude distributions are plotted to investigate the conversion process from complex wave mode to propagating wave mode. Finally, the curves of phase velocity to the ratio of wave loss decrements are illustrated, which offers extra convenience for finding the high phase velocity points where the complex wave loss is near zero.
