AbstractA new poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane electrode using 2-benzoylpyridine semicarbazone as membrane carrier with dioctylphthalate as plasticizer and sodium tetraphenylborate (NaTBP) as anion excluder has been fabricated and investigated as Zn(II)-selective electrode. Best potential response is observed for the composition PVC 30%, plasticizer 58%, NaTBP 8% and ionophore 4% (w/w). The sensor showed a linear stable response over a concentration range of 1.0 × 10−2–4.56 × 10−6 M with a detection limit of 2.28 × 10−6 M and a response time <10 s. The electrode can be used for at least six months without any divergence in potential.

As an essential electrolyte for the human body, the potassium ion (K+) plays many physiological roles in living cells, so the rapid and accurate determination of serum K+ is of great significance. In this work, we developed a solid-contact ion-selective electrode (SC-ISE) using MoS2/Fe3O4 composites as the ion-to-electron transducer to determine serum K+. The potential response measurement of MoS2/Fe3O4/K+-ISE shows a Nernst response by a slope of 55.2 ± 0.1 mV/decade and a low detection limit of 6.3 × 10−6 M. The proposed electrode exhibits outstanding resistance to the interference of O2, CO2, light, and water layer formation. Remarkably, it also presents a high performance in potential reproducibility and long-term stability.

The authors studied the influence of the extraction properties of a PVC membrane plasticizer of a coated-wire type ion-selective electrode on its response in titrations of brucine and atropine with sodium tetraphenyl borate, as well as in potentiometric determinations of these compounds. The highest attainable value of the ion pair concentration in the plasticizer, which is limited by the distribution coefficient of the ion pair, determines the interval in which the electrode potential can be changed; and a linear dependence of the potential range of the titration curves on the logarithm of the ion-pair distribution coefficient was found. The slope of the dependence of the electrode potential on the logarithm of the ion concentration to be determined, found in potentiometric measurements, is proportional to the distribution coefficient of the ion which forms a pair with the ion to be determined and in whose solution the electrode membrane is activated between the measurements. The dependence of the slope of the electrode function on the logarithm of the product of the mentioned distribution coefficients is linear.
