Abstract A novel sheath-core poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) composite fiber was designed and manufactured to improve the hydrophilicity of the PET fibers. The thermal stability of EVOH was first examined to determine the possible processing temperature. Second, the rheological characteristics of EVOH were measured to obtain the appropriate spinning parameters. Then, PET/EVOH composite fibers with various sheath-core ratios were manufactured and the effect of sheath-core ratio on the stable spinning process was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that the PET/EVOH fibers possess a round sheath-core cross-section and a smooth surface, indicating successful spinning. Finally, the mechanical properties and moisture absorption of the PET/ EVOH composite fibers were measured. For PET/EVOH composite fibers, the PET content contributes to the mechanical properties and the EVOH content contributes to the moisture absorption. For the PET/EVOH composite fibers with a sheath-core ratio of 50:50, the moisture regains at room conditions reach to 2.8% and the breaking strength is 2.53 cN/dtex. These good mechanical and moisture properties attract good application prospects.

The Fourier Transform

A novel nanocomposite fibers were prepared from poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) via melt spinning and their thermal and mechanical properties were investigated. Graphite oxide and rGO were characterized by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). FT-IR spectrum of GO and rGO showed the same peak of O-H stretching of the hydroxyl and C=C stretching of aromatic rings as well as C-O stretching. The thermal stability of pristine PET and rGO/PET composite masterbatch was characterized by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The thermal degradation temperature of PET and rGO/PET nanocomposite masterbatch was found at 413.9 °C and 418.1 °C, respectively. The mechanical properties of rGO/PET nanocomposite fibers were investigated and it was found that the mechanical properties were improved in all aspects comparing with neat PET fiber, including tensile strength, young's modulus and elongation at break.

This paper reports on a melt-spinning process of glycol-modified poly(ethylene terephthalate) PETG and regranulate of PETG. The effect of the processing temperature and winding reel velocity on the diameters of fibres was examined. It was observed with a scanning electron microscope that the surface of fibres produced from recycled PETG are thicker but smoother than fibres made of fresh PETG. Applying a higher drawing velocity helped to decrease the diameters, which were between 75-150 μm. Under static deformation, fibres showed different behaviour, with higher flexibility and lower strength observed for fibres made of PETG regranulate. Both types of fibre were chopped and added to carbon fibre reinforced polymers as interlayers to investigate their effect on mechanical properties. It was found that the flexural strength decreased in the presence of PETG fibres, while interlaminar shear strength improved, but only in the case of fresh PETG fibres.
