Two New Species of Recent and Upper Holocene Coccolith-agglutinated Foraminifera from the North Icelandic Shelf, North Atlantic

Abstract Two new coccolith-agglutinated foraminiferal species, Pseudobolivina islandica n. sp. and Haplophragmoides atlanticus n. sp., are described from Recent and Upper Holocene sediments at Húnaflóaáll on the North Icelandic shelf. Specimens of the two species have been found only in the small (63–106 µm) fraction using the wet-counting method. This method allows preservation of these fragile tests, which are predominantly composed of coccoliths, mainly of the species Coccolithus pelagicus (Wallich, 1877).

Broch (1913) described two new species of the coronate scyphomedusa Nausithoë from the North Atlantic, N. atlantica and N. globifera. Bigelow (1928, p. 498) was inclined to think that these two species might finally prove to represent extreme variants of the one species N. rubra Vanhöffen, though a much larger series of specimens in a better state of preservation would be needed to give a definite decision. Kramp (1947, p. 46) considered that N. globifera at any rate was a good species.

Two new species of cranchiid cephalopod are described. These were both collected by opening-closing midwater trawls (RMTs) when vertical series were fished in the North Atlantic from R.R.S. ‘Discovery’.

The enteropneust family Torquaratoridae, discovered in 2005, has the fewest species of the four living families. It is composed of seven species that live on the cold, deep-sea floor. Torquarator bullocki Holland, Clague, Gordon, Gebruk, Pawson and Vecchione, 2005 was the first species described and collected from the Northeastern Pacific. Two new species of Torquaratoridae were collected from the Eastern Pacific and described as Tergivelum baldwinae Holland, Jones, Ellena, Ruhl and Smith, 2009 and Allapasus aurantiacus Holland, Kuhnz and Osborn, 2012. A further three species have been collected from the North Atlantic: Yoda purpurata Priede, Osborn, Gebruk, Jones, Shale, Rogacheva and Holland, 2012, Allapasus isidis Priede, Osborn, Gebruk, Jones, Shale, Rogacheva and Holland, 2012, and Tergivelum cinnabarinum Priede, Osborn, Gebruk, Jones, Shale, Rogacheva and Holland, 2012. The latest Torquaratoridae species was collected from the Russian Arctic in 2013. We add two new species to the Torquaratoridae from Baffin Bay and Viscount Melville Sound, in the eastern Arctic of Canada. Terminstomo arcticus gen. nov. and sp. nov. was collected at a depth of 505 m and is characterized by lacking a heart and a stomochord that extends from the posterior end of the proboscis through the entire length of the collar. Allapasus fuscus sp. nov. was collected from a depth of 444 m and is characterized by a typhlosole process along the dorsal midline of the collar buccal cavity.

Despite a recent revision of the dinoflagellates of the order Dinophysiales on Mexican coasts and a checklist of dinoflagellates from the Mexican Pacific, many records still need to be confirmed, for there are very few reliable illustrations and/or descriptions. In this paper, species composition and distribution of dinoflagellates belonging to the Dinophysiales, the product of the analysis of net phytoplankton material collected from coasts of the tropical Mexican Pacific (Jalisco to Chiapas) are presented. The material has been studied using light microscopy, although a few species were also studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Forty-one species from five genera were identified, with two new records annotated for the Mexican Pacific: Amphisolenia thrinax and Metaphalacroma skogsbergii, and two new species of the genus Amphisolenia, Amphisolenia fusiformis sp. nov. and Amphisolenia michoacana sp. nov. Illustrations, dimensions and distribution data are provided for each species, and descriptions of the new species are also given. Amphisolenia palmata, A. rectangulata, A. truncata, Dinophysis apicata, D. hindmarchii, Histioneis biremis, H. crateriformis, H. pulchra, Ornithocercus cristatus, O. heteroporoides and O. orbiculatus are illustrated for the first time in the waters of the Mexican Pacific. The number of species found in this study is relatively low. The species Dinophysis norvegica and D. sacculus, reported in previous papers, do not seem to occur in Mexican waters, as their distribution is rather limited to the Mediterranean Sea and the North Atlantic, respectively. Finally, the identity of certain species of Dinophysis and the nature of the new species described here are discussed.
