The Impact

The development of natural gas pipeline network towards larger scale and throughput has urged better reliability of the pipeline network to satisfy transportation requirement. Previously, studies of optimizing natural gas pipeline network have been mainly focused on reducing operating cost, with little concern on the reliability of pipeline network. For a natural gas pipeline network with a variety of components and complicated topology, a multi-objective optimization model of both reliability and operating cost is proposed in this study. Failure of each component and the state of pipeline network under failure conditions are taken into account, and minimum cut set method is employed to calculate the reliability of the pipeline network. The variables to be determined for the optimization objectives are the rotating speed of compressors and the opening of valves. Then the solving procedure of the proposed model is presented based on Decoupled Implicit Method for Efficient Network Simulation (DIMENS) method and NS-saDE algorithm. The validity of the optimization model is ascertained by its application on a complicated pipeline network. The results illustrate that the optimization model can depict the relative relationship between reliability and operating cost for different throughput, by which the operation scheme with both satisfying reliability and operating cost can be obtained. In addition, the customer reliability and the impact of the failure of each pipeline on the whole network can be evaluated quantitatively to identify the consumers and pipelines of maintenance priority. The pipeline network reliability can be improved through proper monitoring and maintenance of these consumers and pipelines.

PurposeReliable operation of natural gas pipeline (NGP) is a critical factor in Iran’s economic development. NGP projects go through different ecosystems and considerably affect the environment. Environmental analysis is an essential step toward sustainable development. Tackling the challenges, this paper aims to develop a framework to systematically assess the environmental impact of NGPs.Design/methodology/approachThis study proposes a comprehensive framework for environmental impact analysis of NGPs using Measuring Attractiveness by a Categorical-Based Evaluation Technique (MACBETH). MACBETH protocol is used to calculate the overall environmental scores of projects.FindingsThe results indicate that the impact of implementing NGPs on protected areas is of the highest priority, while the impact on vegetation covers is of least priority for assessing the environmental impact of NGP.Practical implicationsThe practicality and validity of the model in the case of three candidate routes for the Polkale-Neizar project in Iran are examined. According to the results, the third alternative is selected based on its non-interference in protected areas and less environmental impacts. The proposed model can be modified and applied to perform environment appraisal of other linear projects such as energy, road and railway networks.Originality/valueThis model addresses a range of environmental impacts of implementing NGPs at two levels, with the second level being non-additive. The novelty of this study translates into considering the qualitative and quantitative features of each evaluation criterion applied to linear projects simultaneously using a multi-criteria value measurement.

The Impact

The Second West-East Gas Pipeline (2nd WEP) Project, consisting of one trunk line and eight branches, has a total length of 8,704 km and a designed annual transportation capacity of 30 billion cubic meters. The outside diameter of trunk line is 1,219 mm (48″). According to the plan, 2nd WEP will parallel with several existing or planning pipelines in long distance, some will even be located in rocky area. However, there are neither requirements of separation distance nor other related provisions of parallel pipelines in current domestic regulation and codes in China. It is an urgent critical problem to reasonably design, construct and operate multiple pipelines in same corridor. In order to design 2nd WEP in parallel with other existing and planning pipelines, a series of technical studies were carried out. This paper describes the main work. First of all is the literature review, including regulation, standards, codes etc. and similar work on parallel pipelines and applicable practices in other countries. Second, for the primary concern-separation distance, the main factors are considered. Then, the computational results of some 2nd WEP paralleling with other pipelines based on the impact of the failure of natural gas pipeline to adjacent pipelines are introduced. Third, the experiments and some related researches in rocky areas where 2nd WEP parallels with existing pipelines are introduced. Forth, analysis of Direct Current (DC) stray current interference resulted from Cathodic Protection (CP) Systems located along each parallel pipeline is briefly introduced. Then is the mitigation and monitoring requirements for unbounded (separate) CP system. According to the works above together with engineering practices as well as experiences, the design guideline of parallel pipelines is established. When 2nd WEP parallels with other pipelines not locating in rocky areas, the reasonable separation distance is based on integrated considerations of adjacent pipeline’s survival in the event of failure of gas transmission pipeline, easiness to construct, less CP interferences, adequate space requirements for maintenance and repair. For other paralleling cases, engineering requirements are established separately. This guideline has been applied in design of parallel pipelines and provides management requirements for future operation in 2nd WEP project.
