The research approach used is a qualitative type of critical discourse analysis model Roger Fowler et al. The main data source is in the revised edition of the High School Indonesia History textbook 2013. The research data was collected by means of documentation. While the data are analyzed with two levels, namely the micro-level which takes into account the composition of words and sentences in the text, and the macro-level that links with the history books and the value of character education. Data checking is carried out holistically, historically situated, and theoretically by observing PPK in Indonesian History textbooks. The results of this study present nationalism as the theme of character values that most often appears in Indonesian History textbooks, followed by values of independence, religion, integrity, and mutual cooperation. The discourse of nationalism is very dominant in almost every textbook, especially narratives about the spirit of nationalism in the process of nation and state formation.

The research approach used in the exploration stage was a qualitative descriptive approach. The data were collected through documentation study, observation, in-depth interview, and questionnaire. The data were then analyzed by using interactive analysis model. Model testing was done by experimental research. The results of this research were: (1) the exploration stage showed that the Theater Education Textbook used in Undergraduate Elementary Teacher Education (ETE) Program of Sebelas Maret University, Muhammadiyah University, and Slamet Riyadi University Surakarta did not meet the students’ and lecturers’ needs, (2) the theater education textbook was developed through preliminary field testing; and (3) testing phase of textbook effectiveness was done through main field testing. The value of t-obtained is 0.17 and t-table (0.05; 173) = 1.64. Thus, the critical area {t <-1.64 or t> 1.64}. Since t-obtained (0.17) < t-table (1.64) H0: μ1 ≠ μ2 was accepted. Tolerance is one of the most important elements for the formation of a multicultural society. Indonesia as a country with ethnic diversity requires a high tolerance from every citizen to realize a peaceful nation life. These tolerance values can be developed through historical learning which has the main function as a form of national character. The history lesson itself cannot be separated from the use of textbooks as a tool of supporting the learning process. This research tries to analyze the content of tolerance values in Indonesian history textbooks using discourse analysis methods, especially Norman Fairclough's representation analysis. The concept of critical discourse analysis uses  three-dimensional models consisting of text, practice of discourse, and social practice. The results show that tolerance in Indonesian history textbooks is represented in various themes such as diversity,  integration, unity and so on. These themes are packaged in historical stories that are adapted to the prevailing curriculum, namely the 2013 curriculum. Tolerance needs to be understood as a result and an ongoing process. The long history of the Indonesian people shows that tolerance has been embedded as the identity of the Indonesian nation itself. Historical textbooks have a strategic role in instilling the values of tolerance to students. This history textbook is structured with a more popular regressive approach so  the delivery of moral values including tolerance values is more easier understood by students.

This study examines the year-to-year development of militaristic discourse in Indonesian secondary education history textbooks since 1975. Historical descriptions written since the fall of Soeharto’s military regime and its replacement by a civilian government in 1998 tend to emphasize Indonesia’s military history and pay little attention to its civilian leadership. To what degree did political change influence the production of historical discourse in recent textbooks in Indonesia? This article attempts to answer this question by applying Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to textual sources, in order to expose their historical and socio-cultural dimensions. The results show that in the post-Soeharto era, militaristic perspectives continue to dominate discourse production in history textbooks, denying the role of civilian leadership. This glorification of the military demonstrates that the Indonesian army continues to influence the country’s history textbook production in the modern era.

The tendency of the younger generation now prefers outside cultures and many younger generations are less able to sort out most of which have negative impacts rather than a positive impact on themselves and others as well as the environment. There is a need for character education so that the younger generation can be relied upon in the future according to the nation's culture, such as being responsible for mutual cooperation, mutual assistance and good manners.
