Different types of violence have been present in Mexico but there have been few studies that have analyzed their relationship with mental health in adolescents, especially in cities with high rates of social violence. It is important to compare different violence types and their relationship with mental health since not all relationships are the same. It appears that social violence has a stronger relationship with mental health, and for this reason it receives more attention, but other types of violence have a stronger relationship and do not receive as much attention. Chihuahua has been one of the most violent states in Mexico, and Juarez has been the most violent city in the world in 2009 and 2010. The purpose of the study is to compare the relationship of different types of violence (social, cyberbullying, partner violence, and child abuse and neglect) with mental health indicators (depression, anxiety, stress, self-esteem, and paranoid thoughts). There were 526 high school students, from the cities of Juarez ( n = 282) and Chihuahua ( n = 244). The mean age was 16.5 ( SD = 1.4) years and 50.6% reported being males. The relationships among the variables were analyzed using Pearson’s correlations and multiple linear regressions. Both cities that have experienced social violence like carjacking, kidnapping, and sexual assault, but they have very small or no relationships with mental health indicators. Other types of violence have stronger correlations. Our findings suggest that interventions should not focus only in preventing and dealing with social violence, but that other types of violence must also be addressed in adolescents.

COVID-19 is a highly contagious virus that first appeared in China in December 2019. It has affected over 157 million people and killed over 3.2 million. The paper reviews the function of the immune system for COVID-19 prevention, depression, and anxiety due to COVID-19 and their effects on the immune system and the relationship of aging with the immune system and depression and anxiety. It has been found that several elderly people lack the coping mechanisms required to deal with the stress caused by COVID-19. Hence, identifying the factors and mechanisms that lead to this resilience will aid in the development of preventive measures for certain elderly people and groups with more severe mental health problems. Additionally, it would be beneficial to understand how technology could be leveraged to accomplish this goal. During the pandemic, various steps such as social isolation, quarantine, and self-isolation are needed to be implemented properly to slow the spread of the virus. Meanwhile, to help halt the pandemic, everybody must be vaccinated as soon as possible until any bans on social gatherings and social isolation can be removed, allowing other sectors such as schooling, social activities, and life to resume normalcy.

THE Thirty-sixth Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics terminates an eventful year of increased activities expansion, and new responsibilities of far-reaching importance. The Academy membership continues to increase rapidly and the total membership following the recent Executive Board meeting is well over 10,000. The new responsibilities have necessitated the addition of new personnel to the Central Office staff. Mr. George Degnon will work with the Council on Pediatric Practice, especially on pending legislation planned by governmental agencies. Dr. Robert S. Mendelsohn will administer the consultation program of the Academy for all Head Start programs throughout the country. The current year has also brought increased activity in the relationship of the Academy to the other medical organizations. The Medical Intersociety Council, the AMA Interspecialty Committee, the Council of Medical Specialty Societies, and the more recently organized Joint Council of Pediatric Societies have continued to meet and work together along many lines of mutual interest and concern. The Joint Commission on Mental Health for Children has been exceedingly active and now has six task forces composed of extraordinary talent in every aspect of mental health. It is hoped and expected that the final report of this joint commission will be a monumental document. It would be impossible for me to delincate the accomplishments of all the various committees of the Academy. However, I would like to pay tribute to two of these committees whose diligence and productivity have been particularly outstanding. The Council on Pediatric Practice has met many times and the workshop conferences both last October and at this meeting have been very highly successful.

Applied Linguistics is a diverse field, comprising a substantial number of sub-fields, sub-specialisations and related fields. To see that this is the case one need only examine the various hand- books and encyclopaedic references that have been published in the last ten years to see the wide range of topics that have been covered. As with many professional areas in academia, Applied Linguistics is organised around national organisations, with its international structure being a loose confederation known as the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA). Given these diverse academic and structural arrangements, it should not be surprising if academics within different national associations were to cluster around different interests within the field. This study explores the question of what emphases are found in various parts of the world in Applied Linguistics, and in particular, the relationship of Australian Applied Linguistics to international trends using a structural text analysis of abstracts related to Applied Linguistics as well as an historical review of the trends involved.
