The publication of this issue was driven by the vision that, in the not too distant future, Cybernetic Transport Systems (CTS) will be seen on city roads and dedicated infrastructures. TheWorld Council for Sustainability has projected that CTS will be seen in cities in as early as 2030 (Mobility 2030: Meeting the Challenges to Sustainability; World Business Council for Sustainable Mobility, July 2004). CTS are based on fully automated driverless urban road vehicles (CyberCars). They can also be based on Dual-Mode Vehicles (DMV) - conventional vehicles with Advanced Driver Assistance Technology (ADAT) and capable of driverless driving, on request by a driver. ADAT covers electronic and software products that assist drivers in driving. DMV assumes that a driver is not in control of the vehicle at all times but is fully responsible for vehicle operation throughout. Both CyberCars and DMVs co-operate through vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication links thus enabling cybernetic transport to achieve higher traffic flows and improve network efficiency. Main CTS building blocks are CyberCars and/or Dual Mode Vehicles, Road Infrastructure Elements and CTS Traffic Management & Control Centre. These four blocks are interconnected, integrated and made interoperable through Communication Architecture and Protocols, and Operational Safety & Reliability Certification Procedures. A variety of CTS concepts have been prototyped and evaluated within the scope of projects such as: (i) Toyota’s Intelligent Multimode Transportation System (http://www.expo2005.or.jp/en/technology/imts.html); (ii) the CyberCars (http://www.cybercars.org); CyberMove (http://www.cybermove.org); (iii) CityMobil (http://www.citymobil-project.eu/); (iv) Safespot (http://www.safespot-eu.org/); (v) CVIS (http://www.cvisproject.org); (vi) Group Rapid Transit (http://www.2getthere.eu/Group Transit). The figure above shows a CTS prototyped by the CyberCars-2 Project Consortium. An extensive infield, i.e., on-road testing of operational performance of co-operative cybernetic transport solutions was conducted at several road tracks, the last being held at La Rochelle, France, in September 2008. This issue addresses a broad spectrum of theoretical and implementational topics related to CTS development and deployment including: • Cooperative Cybernetic Transport System Architecture • Real-time Decision Making by driverless vehicles • On-road testing of operational performance of CTS • Road-Crossing Landmarks Detection algorithm • Landmark Shape Detection algorithm • Road Shape Estimation algorithm, and • Vehicle-to-road infrastructure (traffic lights) communication solutions. In addition, this issue presents papers that deal with ADAT and analyses: • Acceptability and Usability of a Parking Assistance System for Elderly Drivers • Relationships between Car Accidents and a Driver’s Physiology and Psychology • 2D Localization in Urban Environment, and • Sustainability and Reusability aspects of Common Robotic Technology components. The article is devoted to the issue of increasing the level of road safety (RTS), a road infrastructure management system using simulation modeling is proposed. The aim of the study is to develop a simulation model of a problematic section of the road network (UDS) in the city of Elabuga, to select the optimal parameters for the functioning of traffic lights, which will improve the quality of road infrastructure management, while reducing the risk of occurrence and the severity of a road traffic accident (RTA). The analysis of research in the field of traffic management is carried out, methods are considered that allow assessing the risk of accidents, as well as methods for reducing the severity of the consequences of road accidents. AbstractWe present methods for analysing hierarchical and overlapping community structure and spreading phenomena on complex networks. Different models can be developed for describing static connectivity or dynamical processes on a network topology. In this study, classical network connectivity and influence spreading models are used as examples for network models. Analysis of results is based on a probability matrix describing interactions between all pairs of nodes in the network. One popular research area has been detecting communities and their structure in complex networks. The community detection method of this study is based on optimising a quality function calculated from the probability matrix. The same method is proposed for detecting underlying groups of nodes that are building blocks of different sub-communities in the network structure. We present different quantitative measures for comparing and ranking solutions of the community detection algorithm. These measures describe properties of sub-communities: strength of a community, probability of formation and robustness of composition. The main contribution of this study is proposing a common methodology for analysing network structure and dynamics on complex networks. We illustrate the community detection methods with two small network topologies. In the case of network spreading models, time development of spreading in the network can be studied. Two different temporal spreading distributions demonstrate the methods with three real-world social networks of different sizes. The Poisson distribution describes a random response time and the e-mail forwarding distribution describes a process of receiving and forwarding messages.

Using intelligent transport systems in cities is gaining popularity. The fundamental aim of their existence is to improve safety and traffic flow and prevent congestion in city centres. All people moving around the city, such as public transport passengers, as well as truck and emergency vehicle drivers and drivers of passenger vehicles, are users of intelligent transport systems. Research which was carried out for the article entirely concerns functioning and utility of intelligent transport systems from truck drivers’ experience. The main aim of the research was to evaluate services and tools within intelligent transport systems in European cities which are visited by Polish truck drivers. Our research indicates that most drivers (almost 98%) stated that they find intelligent transport systems useful and 92.5% of interviewed pointed that intelligent transport systems help with their everyday work duties. Of all the tools in the survey drivers agreed that variable content signs, accommodative traffic lights, and extra road illumination have most influence in road safety. Identifying the most useful and helpful tools of intelligent transport systems will allow to define their preferred development directions from truck drivers’ point of view.

Background: In a world where every municipality is pursuing the goals of more sustainable mobility, bicycles play a fundamental role in getting rid of private cars and travelling by an eco-friendly mode of transport. Additionally, private and shared bikes can be used as a feeder transit system, solving the problem of the first- and last-mile trips. Thanks to GIS (Geographic Information System) software, it is possible to evaluate the effectiveness of such a sustainable means of transport in future users’ modal choice. Methods: Running an accessibility analysis of cycling and rail transport services, the potential mobility demand attracted by these services and the possible multimodality between bicycle and rail transport systems can be assessed. Moreover, thanks to a modal choice model calibrated for high school students, it could be verified if students will be really motivated to adopt this solution for their home-to-school trips. Results: The GIS-based analysis showed that almost half of the active population in the study area might potentially abandon the use of their private car in favour of a bike and its combination with public transport systems; furthermore, the percentage of the students of one high school of Palermo, the Einstein High School, sharply increases from 1.5% up to 10.1%, thanks also to the combination with the rail transport service. Conclusions: The GIS-based methodology shows that multimodal transport can be an effective way to pursue a more sustainable mobility in cities and efficiently connect suburbs with low-frequent public transport services to the main public transport nodes.

AbstractIntra-plant transport systems within their operation directly impact on the performance of production systems. For their effective operation, it is, therefore, necessary to realize evaluation of operational performance and effectivity. For the realization of this type of evaluation, in addition to a wide range of sensors that can be difficult for installation and operation, we can also use indirect methods that are equally able to provide reliable operational characteristics. Indirect analytical methods are presented above all by the approach which is based on the use of simulation methods. The method of computer simulation provides a wide range of options for the evaluation of efficiency and performance. The paper describes the use of a simulation model created in the program Tecnomatix Plant Simulation for analyzing the supply of production workplaces within the MilkRun system.

An increasing number of recent discussions have focused on the need for designing transport systems in consonance with the importance of the environment, thus promoting investment in the growth of non-motorized transport infrastructure. Under such conditions, the demand for implementing the most effective infrastructure measures has a profoundly positive impact, and requires the least possible financial and human resources. The development of the concept of sustainable mobility puts emphasis on the integrated planning of transport systems, and pays major attention to the expansion of non-motorized and public transport, and different sharing systems, as well as to effective traffic management involving intelligent transport systems. The development of transport infrastructure requires massive investment, and hence the proper use of mobility measures is one of the most important objectives for the rational planning of sustainable transport systems. To achieve this established goal, this article examines a compiled set of mobility measures and identifies the significance of the preferred tools, which involve sustainable mobility experts. The paper also applies multicriteria decision making methods in assessing urban transport systems and their potential in terms of sustainable mobility. Multicriteria decision making methods have been successfully used for assessing the effectiveness of sustainable transport systems, and for comparing them between cities. The proposed universal evaluation model is applied to similar types of cities. The article explores the adaptability of the model by assessing big Lithuanian cities.

Bicycle Sharing Systems (BSSs) are exponentially increasing in the urban mobility sector. They are traditionally conceived as a last-mile complement to the public transport system. In this paper, we demonstrate that BSSs can be seen as a public transport system in their own right. To do so, we build a mathematical framework for the classification of BSS trips. Using trajectory information, we create the trip index, which characterizes the intrinsic purpose of the use of BSS as transport or leisure. The construction of the trip index required a specific analysis of the BSS shortest path, which cannot be directly calculated from the topology of the network given that cyclists can find shortcuts through traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, etc. to reduce the overall traveled distance. Adding a layer of complication to the problem, these shortcuts have a non-trivial existence in terms of being intermittent, or short lived. We applied the proposed methodology to empirical data from BiciMAD, the public BSS in Madrid (Spain). The obtained results show that the trip index correctly determines transport and leisure categories, which exhibit distinct statistical and operational features. Finally, we inferred the underlying BSS public transport network and show the fundamental trajectories traveled by users. Based on this analysis, we conclude that 90.60% of BiciMAD’s use fall in the category of transport, which demonstrates our first statement.

The traffic signal lights control system automatically controls the statues of the intersection traffic lights and dispatch the traffic vehicles normally that traffic scheduling is an important system and it is the most basic and most important tools in city traffic management. Traffic lights control system made by single chip microcomputer technology has a single working model, low reliability, slow speed, and it can't modify or upgrade online, which is difficult to adapt to changes at different times of the traffic flow. This design of the dual mode of traffic lights control system intelligently controls each intersection traffic lights on and off time in the different period, which will improve the scheduling efficiency of road intersections. The design is based on FPGA with a digital display of traffic lights control system, compile the program design and simulation in Quartus II development environment, and ultimately download to EP2C35F672C6 chip of Altera Company. By the DE2 experiments test platform, the system has stable performance, simple operation, easy to maintenance, high reliability, strong expansibility and good refactoring.
