We propose a surgical manipulator system supporting surgical treatment and intraoperative disease diagnosis. Manipulators fit vertical-magnetic-field open-configuration magnetic resonance (MR) imagers, and surgical tools on the end of the manipulator arm are interchangeable. We evaluated maneuverability using slave manipulators through a surgical input device consisting of a pair of master devices and a console. We conducted basic suturing tasks in training material that mimics human tissue and thin blood vessels.

Snapping hip syndrome is a condition in which the predominant symptom is the snapping feelingaround the hip joint caused by a dynamic impingement between muscles or tendons and boneprominences. The etiology of the snapping hip types and consequently the therapeutic targets havebeen subjects of discussion and controversy along the years. A careful clinical history and physicalexamination is frequently enough for this disease diagnosis. Treatment is typically conservative,however when it is not successful surgical treatment is indicated, consisting on the snapping muscleor tendons lengthening. The authors review in this paper the current scientific literature about functionalanatomy, physiopathology, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of snapping hip.

Stability analysis of parametrically driven surface waves in liquid metals in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field is presented. Floquet analysis gives various subharmonic and harmonic instability zones. The magnetic field stabilizes the onset of parametrically excited surface waves. The minima of all the instability zones are raised by a different amount as the Chandrasekhar number is raised. The increase in the magnetic field leads to a series of bicritical points at a primary instability in thin layers of a liquid metal. The bicritical points involve one subharmonic and another harmonic solution of different wavenumbers. A tricritical point may also be triggered as a primary instability by tuning the magnetic field.

We present analytic solutions of Maxwell equations for infinitely long cylindrical conductors with nonvanishing electric charge and currents in the external background spacetime of a line gravitomagnetic monopole. It has been shown that vertical magnetic field arising around cylindrical conducting shell carrying azimuthal current will be modified by the gravitational field of NUT source. We obtain that the purely general relativistic magnetic field which has no Newtonian analog will be produced around charged gravitomagnetic monopole.

INTRODUCTION: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is probably one of the most prevalent diseases in the world that also compromises the quality of life of the affected significantly. Its incidence in Brazil is 12%, corresponding to 20 million individuals. OBJECTIVE: To update the GERD management and the new trends on diagnosis and treatment, reviewing the international and Brazilian experience on it. METHOD: The literature review was based on papers published on Medline/Pubmed, SciELO, Lilacs, Embase and Cochrane crossing the following headings: gastroesophageal reflux disease, diagnosis, clinical treatment, surgery, fundoplication. RESULTS: Various factors are involved on GERD physiopathology, the most important being the transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxation. Clinical manifestations are heartburn, regurgitation (typical symptoms), cough, chest pain, asthma, hoarseness and throat clearing (atypical symptoms), which may be followed or not by typical symptoms. GERD patients may present complications such as peptic stenosis, hemorrhage, and Barrett's esophagus, which is the most important predisposing factor to adenocarcinoma. The GERD diagnosis must be based on the anamnesis and the symptoms must be evaluated in terms of duration, intensity, frequency, triggering and relief factors, pattern of evolution and impact on the patient's quality of life. The diagnosis requires confirmation with different exams. The goal of the clinical treatment is to relieve the symptoms and surgical treatment is indicated for patients who require continued drug use, with intolerance to prolonged clinical treatment and with GERD complications. CONCLUSION: GERD is a major digestive health problem and affect 12% of Brazilian people. The anamnesis is fundamental for the diagnosis of GERD, with special analysis of the typical and atypical symptoms (duration, intensity, frequency, triggering and relief factors, evolution and impact on the life quality). High digestive endoscopy and esophageal pHmetry are the most sensitive diagnosctic methods. The clinical treatment is useful in controlling the symptoms; however, the great problem is keeping the patients asymptomatic over time. Surgical treatment is indicated for patients who required continued drug use, intolerant to the drugs and with complicated forms of GERD.
