Rapid growth in communication bandwidth has enabled novel uses of mobile wireless technologies in areas such as smartphone-based user participatory sensing for disaster detection and mitigation. In this manuscript, we discuss novel approaches to resolve fundamental problems that currently hamper the effective utilization of user participatory sensing in this critical application domain. Our approaches to address major challenges related to energy efficiency, collaboration, privacy, ease of deployment, and robustness of communication can be integrated with external systems in a complementary manner to overcome the limitations of current disaster detection and mitigation systems that rely on expensive stationary devices.

Abstract Cloud computing has seen rapid growth and environments are now providing multiple physical servers with several virtual machines running on those servers. Networks have grown larger and have become more powerful in recent years. A vital problem related to this advancement is that it has become increasingly complex to manage networks. SNMP is one standard which is applied as a solution to this management of networks problem. This work utilizes SNMP to explore the capabilities of SNMP protocol and its features for monitoring, control and automation of virtual machines and hypervisors. For this target, a stage-wise solution has been formed that obtains results of experiments from the first stage uses SNMPv3 and feed to the second stage for further processing and advancement. The target of the controlling experiments is to explore the extent of SNMP capability in the control of virtual machines running in a hypervisor, also in terms of energy efficiency. The core contribution based on real experiments is conducted to provide empirical evidence for the relation between power consumption and virtual machines.

The Internet is a major driver of e-learning advancement and there was an estimate of over 1000 million Internet users in 2004. The ownership of mobile devices is even more astonishing. ITU (2006) reported that 77% of the population in developed countries are mobile subscribers. The emergence of mobile, wireless and satellite technologies is impacting our daily life and our learning. New Internet technologies are being used to support small-screen mobile and wireless devices. In a field marked by such rapid evolution, we cannot assume that the Web as we know it today will remain the primary conduit for Internet- based learning (Bowles, 2004, p.12). Mobile and wireless technologies will play a pivotal role in learning. This new field is commonly known as mobile learning (m-learning). In this article, the context of m-learning in relation to e-learning and d-learning is presented. Because of the great importance in Web-based technologies to bridge over mobile and wireless technologies, the infrastructure to support mlearning through browser-based technologies is described. This concept represents my own view on the future direction of m-learning. An m-learning experiment, which implemented the concept, is then presented.

The rapid growth of global biodiesel production requires simultaneous effective utilization of glycerol obtained as a by-product of the transesterification process. Accumulation of the byproduct glycerol from biodiesel industries can lead to considerable environment issues. Hence, there is extensive research focus on the transformation of crude glycerol into value-added products. This paper makes an overview of the nature of crude glycerol and ongoing research on its conversion to value-added products. Both chemical and biological routes of glycerol valorization will be presented. Details of crude glycerol conversion into microbial lipid and subsequent products will also be highlighted.

Renewable energies have in Spain become a very dynamic sector. The need to implement European Directives to address climate change issues, has been joined by the requirements to improve energy efficiency and to reduce the external dependence.This article discusses the keys to this process, highlighting both the factors that have enabled the rapid growth of some technologies (preferably wind and solar), and the limitations imposed by both budgetary consolidation pro- cesses as growth accelerated some of them.
