1-C-(1-Acetylacetonyl)-2-deoxy-2-(1-methyl-3-oxobut-1-enyl)amino -d-galactitol is obtained from the condensation of 2-amino-2-deoxy-d-galactose with pentane-2,4-dione in anhydrous solvent. On treatment with hot alkali it gives 2-methylpyrrole with 37% yield. By acid hydrolysis under mild conditions the compound loses the N substituent and from the resulting unstable derivative 2-methylpyrrole is obtained (52% yield). It is concluded that derivatives of aminohexoses substituted at C-1 with a dioxopentyl chain are the precursors of 2-methylpyrrole in the Cessi & Serafini-Cessi (1963) modification of the Elson–Morgan reaction. As demonstrated previously, products of condensation of aminohexoses with pentane-2,4-dione at the amino group are not converted directly into 2-methylpyrrole, but this step provides protection of the amino group during condensation at C-1.

Abstract Different parameters, namely polymerization temperature, polymerization time, monomer/initiator ratio, nature of the initiator, amount of water or other impurities etc. are very significant for polymerization reactions either in bulk or solution. Monomer to initiator ratio has a very significant role in polymerization reactions and a value ranging from 50 to 5000 that has been reported by different researchers. Recrystallization of the monomer removes the meso compounds from the monomer, which absorbs the moisture and effects polymerization reaction. So, it is necessary to recrystallize the monomer with any anhydrous solvent like dry toluene, ethyl acetate etc. Prolonged reaction time cannot increase the polymer yield; it generally causes the decrease of molecular weight and broadening of molecular weight distribution of formed polymers. This is probably due to the transesterification side reaction in polymerization, intensifying at prolonged time periods. Several groups like hydroxyl and carboxylic acid affect the polymerization rate.

The soluble chloride salts in soils may be divided into two parts, one which is freely soluble even at low moisture contents and may be extracted by a suitable anhydrous solvent, and a second which becomes soluble only when ample moisture is present. The chloride retained in the less soluble form may be estimated by the difference between the chloride extracted from a dry soil sample by an anhydrous mixture of 90% ethanol and 10% ethylene glycol and that extracted by an aqueous solvent, 17% glycerol with 83% water. This technique could be used to identify weakly and strongly salt-retentive soils, and to follow changes in salt retention caused by various types of land use.
