Bulk deposition was studied along an urbanization gradient in the state of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. During a yearlong period seven sites within the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey (MAM) and two rural sites (Allende and Linares) were monitored, with the purpose of characterizing deposition and identifying possible patterns between sites. A total of 32 rainfall events were collected. An average pH of 7.15 ± 0.02 was found, which indicates the presence of neutralizing substances in rainwater, as well as an average Electrical Conductivity of 153.96 ± 6.83 μS/cm. The annual accumulated deposition follows the descending order Ca> K> Mg> Zn> Fe> Mn> Cu> Cd> Ni and does not show significant differences between urban and rural areas, with the exception of Ca (p = 0.017). The Principal Component Analysis shows that metals (Cu, Zn, Ni, Mn, and Cd) represent an important pathway in the deposition phenomena and this behavior is maintained through the urbanization gradient, which denotes that the rural areas could be connected to the air basin of the MAM. Seasonal deposition showed that Zn, Fe, Cd, Cu, Ni, Mn Ca, and Mg are higher during autumn and K during winter. Enrichment Factors shows that Zn and Cd were highly enriched, Cu and Ni were moderately enriched, and Ca, K, and Mn were not enriched. Finally, backward trajectories for rural sites showed that only for Allende site a possible carry-over of pollutants is observed during the summer, since the wind currents come preferably from the northern part of the MAM.

This study aimed to know the differences, if any, in the consumption of tobacco and alcohol among adolescents from urban and rural areas, and if self-esteem and self-efficacy are related to the consumption in these two groups of adolescents from secondary schools in urban and rural areas of Nuevo León México, from January to June in 2006. The study was based on the theoretical concepts of self-esteem, perceived self-efficacy and consumption of alcohol and tobacco. The design was descriptive and correlational with a sample of 359 students. A substantial difference was found in the consumption of tobacco among secondary students from urban and rural areas (U= 7513.50, p = .03). The average consumption in urban area was higher (average chi = .35) than in the rural area (average chi = .14). A negative and significant relation was found between the quantity of drinks consumed on a typical day and self-esteem (r s = - .23, p <.001), as well as for the quantity of cigarettes consumed on a typical day (r s = - .20, p <.001).

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse the spatial disparity between rural and urban areas in Ghana using the Ghana Living Standards Survey’s (GLSS) rounds 5 and 6 data to advance the assertion that an endowed rural sector is necessary to promote agricultural development in Ghana. This analysis helps us to know the factors that contribute to the depravity of the rural sectors to inform policy towards development targeting. Design/methodology/approach A multivariate principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis were applied to data from the GLSS-5 and GLSS-6 to determine the characteristics of the rural-urban divide in Ghana. Findings The findings reveal that the rural poor also spend 60.3 per cent of their income on food, while the urban dwellers spend 49 per cent, which is an indication of food production capacity. They have low access to information technology facilities, have larger household sizes and lower levels of education. Rural areas depend a lot on firewood for cooking and use solar/dry cell energies and kerosene for lighting which have implications for conserving the environment. Practical implications Developing the rural areas to strengthen agricultural growth and productivity is a necessary condition for eliminating spatial disparities and promoting overall economic development in Ghana. Addressing rural deprivation is important for conserving the environment due to its increased use of fuelwood for cooking. Absence of alternatives to the use of fuelwood weakens the efforts to reduce deforestation. Originality/value The application of PCA to show the factors that contribute to spatial inequality in Ghana using the GLSS-5 and GLSS-6 data is unique. The study provides insights into redefining the framework for national poverty reduction efforts.

The construction industry is an indicator of economic development: in good times both individuals and companies invest to increase or improve their houses and facilities. The halted construction is an indication of economic difficulties. Hence the importance of protecting infrastructure investments through diagnostic, recovery and construction rehabilitation procedures. IX National Congress ALCONPAT Mexico 2020 addressed the thematic axes: Materials and nanomaterials, Durability and sustainability, Preservation of built heritage, Preservation, maintenance and rehabilitation, Semi and non-destructive tests, Corrosion in concrete structures, Climate Change. Four Plenary Conferences were presented, given by renowned researchers from Spain, Colombia, Mexico and Argentina. Nine Master Conferences were also presented, given by Researchers from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León, Veracruzana University, CNIC of Havana, Cuba and the Autonomous University of Campeche. 61 papers were received, divided into: 35 oral presentations 26 poster presentations. The participating institutions were: Universidad Autónoma de Campeche, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Universidad Veracruzana, Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo, Tecnológico Nacional de México (Instituto Tecnológico de Chetumal), Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas, Cinvestav Unidad Mérida, Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán , Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco, CIIDIR IPN Campus Oaxaca, Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas de Cuba, Consultor Independiente de Ecuador, Centro Internacional de Matemáticas Numéricas e Ingeniería (España), Universidad Nacional del Sur ( Argentina). Effort and enthusiasm of the participants to carry out the event in virtual mode, due to the existing adverse sanitary conditions, stands out. It is one more indication of the strength of the ALCONPAT community in maintaining the continuity of one of its activities to exchange knowledge and experiences for the improvement of practices aimed at prolonging the durability of the infrastructure.
