This chapter reveals the advantages of artificial neural networks (ANNs) by means of prediction success and effects on solutions for various problems. With this aim, initially, multilayer ANNs and their structural properties are explained. Then, feed-forward ANNs and a type of training algorithm called back-propagation, which was benefited for these type networks, are presented. Different structural design problems from civil engineering are optimized, and handled intended for obtaining prediction results thanks to usage of ANNs.

To ensure the safety and the logicality of a structure and to meet the needs by the architectural function and form are the main goals of a structure design. Based on the structural principles of safety, comfort and aesthetics, the mechanical characteristics, the methods of calculation and design, and the key construction technology of the stair by folded steel plates are summarized in this paper combined with the design of a steel stair in Shanghai.

The progressive collapse of the buildings is an extremely harmful disaster, which always leads to serious loss of life and property. It has been one of the hotspots of the civil engineering study. The progressive collapse of the buildings includes a throng of questions: material nonlinearity, geometric nonlinearity, contact-impact problem, so there are still many problems need to be further study, In order to get a kind of method which is feasible, dependable and efficient, to assess structural progressive collapse-resisting capacity. The research of the assessment can provide a scientific basis for structural design, reinforcing and transforming old structures.
