Welcome to the fifth collection by Wyvern Poets, in collaboration with the University of Dundee. 2021 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), father of the historical novel and, effectively, of a new kind of mass ‘time travel’. Scott’s prolific output exported an image of his homeland with global appeal, if not always scrupulous authenticity. Stuart Kelly’s 2011 biography, Scott-land, is subtitled The Man Who Invented a Nation, perhaps without too much exaggeration. Scott’s antiquarian vision transformed a turbulent past into a pre-industrial landscape for the Romantic imagination, virtually overwhelming its place of origin or at least melding with it, as he rapidly became one the best-selling authors on earth. John Davidson’s ‘The Salvation of Nature’ (1891), fantasised a future Scotland bought out by an entertainment conglomerate. The World’s Pleasance Company, Ltd. demolishes anything built after 1700, ‘rewilding’ Scotland into a kind of neo-medieval theme park re-staging the past for tourists. Davidson’s story was both satirical exaggeration and backhanded tribute to Scott’s work for bringing history to life in a certain form. Hence this collection considers the many ways in which Scott’s evocative, but also problematic reimagining of his homeland remains relevant to our time and beyond.

After Sir Walter Scott made the historical novel popular with his Waverley novels, many other writers, including the major novelists Dickens and Thackeray and the minor novelists Ainsworth, G. P. R. James, Bulwer-Lytton, and Reade, took up the form. But while the major novelists are credited with artistry in their use of history, the minor ones are generally regarded as hacks who used history indiscriminately in any way they wished in order to “make saleable novels.” The disparaging criticism of William Harrison Ainsworth's use of history exemplifies this unreflective critical tendency.For several probable reasons, critics have not been inclined to credit Ainsworth with using history responsibly; however, none of the reasons is based on an examination of his sources: his rapid ascension and decline as an important literary figure, his popularity with the common reading public, and his failure to progress artistically after his first few good novels. His artistic growth seems to have ended in 1840, forty-one years before the publication of his last novel. These critics have seen him as a “manufacturer of fiction,” and therefore not responsible in his treatment of historical fact and his use of historical documents, even though time and place are of crucial importance to Ainsworth. One could hardly regard Ainsworth more incorrectly. A close reading of Ainsworth's historical sources demonstrates that Ainsworth's history is extremely reliable in both generalities and particulars; his alterations, usually minor, serve only to adumbrate his concept of history as cycle. Thus, even though he is a novelist and not a historian, the faithful revelation of the past is central to his work. He examines history carefully in order to present truths about life and in order to demonstrate how history reveals these truths.

This chapter focuses primarily on Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe (1819) and the novels—including Scott’s subsequent crusading fictions—that paid tribute to it through their engagement with roughly the same period of English history. In the hands of writers such as Edward Bulwer-Lytton and Charles Kingsley, the historical novel after Scott tended to present the Norman invasion as an enduringly formative moment in the making of modern imperial Britain. Popular fictions by Charlotte Yonge and G. A. Henty, composed for child readers, were similarly inspired by Scott, though in their reductive rewriting of Ivanhoe they further contributed to Scott’s ‘descent to the school-room’. Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Black Arrow (1883), by contrast, I will argue in conclusion, recovers the playfully reflexive scepticism of Ivanhoe and detaches the adolescence of its confused hero from any idea of an analogous national emergence.

The initial premise of Georg Lukács's The Historical Novel is well-known and can be found outlined in its opening sentence: “The historical novel arose at the beginning of the nineteenth century at about the time of Napoleon's collapse (Scott's Waverley appeared in 1814)” (15). According to Lukács, the classical historical novel inaugurated by Sir Walter Scott was distinguished from what had preceded it by the conscious employment of a historical sense, already implicitly present in the realist fiction of Smollett and Fielding, combined with an understanding that progress is driven by the conflict of social forces.

This volume is dedicated to the Anthropological and Ethnological section of the Natural History Museum. First the historical journey of the collections is traced from the antique nucleus of the Medici to the foundation of the National Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology, when Florence was the capitol of Italy, and the discipline of anthropology was born. The second part illustrates the multivariate collections from all over the globe. They are a precious record of the past and present biological and cultural diversity of our species opening wide horizons that rigorously connect science to the many faces of human culture, including art. The third section is dedicated to current research and opens new prospectives on the significance of ethnological and anthropological collections due to new technology and in light of a new appreciation of the museum as a living “zone of contact”.

On Friday September 17 Jim Stitt died quietly in his sleep, ending a long and characteristically tenacious battle with cancer. His passing leaves a void of great magnitude in the geological sciences and in the lives of the many people whom he influenced as family, friends, or colleagues. I was Jim's first Ph.D. student at the University of Missouri, where he spent the past 31 years as a pillar of the geology program, serving at various times as Chair and Graduate Student Advisor. Jim is well known and respected for an impressive body of meticulously crafted taxonomic and biostratigraphic studies on trilobites and brachiopods. His three monographs on faunas in the Arbuckle and Wichita Mountains of Oklahoma (Stitt, 1971a, 1977, 1983) established that area as a standard for correlation of Upper Cambrian and Lower Ordovician strata in North America. This “Oklahoma trilogy” is a treasure trove of taxonomic and biostratigraphic data that has been drawn upon heavily in numerous subsequent biostratigraphic and paleobiologic studies. It provides a biozonation of unparalleled precision for carbonate platform facies of that interval, ironically assembled in an area where rocks of that age yield their fossils only reluctantly. Jim took great pride in extracting useful information from difficult rocks. He passed that laudable attitude on to his academic offspring, along with the sense of satisfaction he derived from seeing his data put to good use in solving geologic or paleobiologic problems, in his own work and in that of others. At the same time, he was always complimentary and supportive of more theoretical or abstract research, an attitude sadly lacking in some practitioners with a bent toward applied paleontology.

The macroalgal flora of the Island of São Miguel (eastern group of the Azores Archipelago) has attracted the interest of many researchers in the past, the first publications going back to the nineteenth century. Initial studies were mainly taxonomic, resulting in the publication of a checklist of the Azorean benthic marine algae. Later, the establishment of the University of the Azores on the Island permitted the logistic conditions to develop both temporal studies and long-term research and this resulted in a significant increase on research directed at the benthic marine algae and littoral communities of the Island and consequent publications. Prior to the present paper, the known macroalgal flora of São Miguel Island comprised around 260 species. Despite this richness, a significant amount of the research was never made public, notably Masters and PhD theses encompassing information regarding presence data recorded at littoral and sublittoral levels down to a depth of approximately 40 m around the Island and the many collections made, which resulted in vouchers deposited in the AZB Herbarium Ruy Telles Palhinha and the LSM- Molecular Systematics Laboratory at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of the Azores. The present publication lists the macroalgal taxonomic records, together with information on their ecology and occurrence around São Miguel Island, improving the knowledge of the Azorean macroalgal flora at local and regional scales. A total of 12,781 specimens (including some identified only to genus) belonging to 431 taxa of macroalgae are registered, comprising 284 Rhodophyta, 59 Chlorophyta and 88 Ochrophyta (Phaeophyceae). Of these, 323 were identified to species level (212 Rhodophyta, 48 Chlorophyta and 63 Ochrophyta), of which 61 are new records for the Island (42 Rhodophyta, 9 Chlorophyta and 10 Ochrophyta), one an Azorean endemic (Predaea feldmannii subsp. azorica Gabriel), five are Macaronesian endemisms (the red algae Botryocladia macaronesica Afonso-Carrillo, Sobrino, Tittley & Neto, Laurencia viridis Gil-Rodríguez & Haroun, Millerella tinerfensis (Seoane-Camba) S.M.Boo & J.M.Rico, Phyllophora gelidioides P.Crouan & H.Crouan ex Karsakoff and the green alga Codium elisabethiae O.C.Schmidt), 19 are introduced species (15 Rhodophyta, two Chlorophyta and two Ochrophyta) and 32 are of uncertain status (21 Rhodophyta, five Chlorophyta and six Ochrophyta).

This chapter argues for the interest and importance of Anglo-Saxonist novels when analysing questions of identity in Victorian Britain. Focusing on the nineteenth century’s two longest works of literary Anglo-Saxonism—Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s 1848 historical novel Harold and Charles Kingsley’s 1866 Hereward the Wake—it reveals that, contrary to contemporary opinion, these works do not assert, but rather question and investigate, simplistic notions of national identity. Both books are often dismissed as simply poor imitations of the earlier work of Sir Walter Scott. The chapter traces their literary origins to well before Scott; argues that the texts differ importantly from Scott’s work, in ways that can tell us much about the mid-nineteenth century; and reveals how the books intersect in important ways with other manifestations of Victorian medievalism, and have also had an important legacy in the medievalism of the late twentieth and the twenty-first centuries.


Much of this report will consist of a summary of the mammary work done in the Department of Anatomy during the past 25 years in collaboration with Professor H. M. Evans’s group in the Institute of Experimental Biology and Professor Choh Hao Li of the Laboratory of Hormone Research, all of the University of California. Such a summary may be made most conveniently by using a schema and some photographs representing our main findings in the Long-Evans rat. The more difficult task is to fit this research into proper perspective involving, as it must, some reference to a mass of literature on the mammary gland. Rather than attempt a thorough review of the thousands of papers in this field, relatively few key examples have been chosen to indicate the trend of thought and theory during and just preceding the period of our investigations. For more complete reviews on this subject the reader is referred to Mayer & Klein (1948, 1949), Cowie & Folley (1955) and Folley (1956). Of historical interest is de Rothschild’s (1900) list of about 10 000 references to the literature prior to 1900, with supplements in 1901 and 1902. If a quarter of a century seems a long time to be engaged in elucidating the problem of hormonal control of the mammary gland, some explanation may be found in the fact that this was the period of isolation of the many hormones involved, and of developing satisfactory techniques for multiple endocrinectomies. That the problem would become a complicated one might have been suspected from the knowledge that the mammary gland arrived late, if not last, in the phylogenetic scale of organ evolution. Further, proof that such suspicion was well founded has been adduced in the many experiments showing that the main phases of mammary growth and function are dependent upon all of the hypophysial hormones and their target organ hormones, plus the secretions of that latest arrival on the endocrine scene—the placenta.

Abstract Published anonymously in 1814, Waverley; Or ‘Tis Sixty Years Hence is a historical novel by Sir Walter Scott which unfolds the story of a young English soldier, Edward Waverley, and his journey to Scotland. Regarded as the first historical novel, it contains elements of modernity, heralding a new upcoming era in England. Scott obviously displays the concept of the modern/modernity differently from the perception that writers are conveying today, but he hints at the emergence of a society detached from feudal customs in several aspects through the issue of union between England and Scotland. Highlighting the modern characteristics of Walter Scott’s Waverley, this paper argues that Scott employs elements of modernity in his novel long before their disclosure in literature and politics.

This essay shows how Auguste-Jean-Baptiste Defauconpret's French translations of Old Mortality and Rob Roy followed a politically conservative agenda, reconfiguring Sir Walter Scott's novels for a Legitimist, Catholic, post-Napoleonic readership. Political rewriting went hand in hand with an aesthetic project as Defauconpret refashioned Scott's protagonists to resemble the domestic heroes of the French sentimental novel, exiling them to the private sphere. Yet Defauconpret inadvertently created an influential formal hybrid which not only caused the French historical novel to diverge radically from Scott's model but played a significant role in the evolution of the French realist novel.
