Food legumes are crops of the family Leguminosae, also called Fabacae. They are mainly grown for their edible seeds and thus are also named grain legumes. Based on world production estimates, Cicer arietinum L. (Chickpea) is the third most important coldseason food legume after the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and pea (Pisum sativum L.). Chickpea is generally consumed as a seed food, being a good source of protein and other essential human nutrients. Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) has recently been shown to have antioxidant, antibacterial, anticancer and antidiabetic activities. This article presents information on the chemical components of Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), antioxidant, antibacterial and anticancer compounds are reviewed in relation to potential medicinal uses.

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is one of the important plants in terms of nutrition. The yield and quality studies on chickpea, which has the highest production value among edible grain legumes, continue at full stem in our country. When it comes to quality, certain consumer expectations such as protein content, cooking time and seed coat ratio dominate the quality improvement. This study was conducted according to the experimental designs of randomized blocks under the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, Uşak University and the laboratory conditions of Faculty of Agriculture, Ondokuz Mayıs University. In this study, a total of 30 chickpea genotypes were used, 13 of them have different varieties. Cooking Time (min), Water Absorption Index (%), Seed Coat Rate (%), Protein Rate (%) and Amylose Rate (%) values of the genotypes have been obtained. The statistically significant differences have been detected between the genotypes in terms of all parameters examined in the variance analysis conducted as a result of this study. Similarly, the result of this study has revealed the correlation between the properties. This study was obtained from a part of the master’s thesis.

El garbanzo (Cicer arietinum L.) es una de las principales leguminosas de grano cultivadas en el mundo. México es de los diez principales productores a nivel mundial con una producción total de 171 mil toneladas de grano. Este cultivo presenta alto nivel de autogamia y de monotonía genética, lo que dificulta la diferenciación de genotipos élite. En este estudio preliminar se evaluó la variabilidad de 57 genotipos de diferentes áreas geográficas mediante caracteres morfológicos y marcadores moleculares tipo RAPD e ISSR. El análisis de correspondencia múltiple mostró que los mayores valores discriminantes fueron el color de la flor azul y semillas grandes y de forma redondeada, pero el agrupamiento respectivo no diferenció a las accesiones, incluyendo las especies silvestres; sin embargo, el análisis UPGMA logró una mejor separación. Los marcadores RAPD aun cuando generaron perfiles de ADN, no fueron informativos, mientras que los ISSR diferenciaron a las 57 accesiones de C. arietinum utilizadas y a la especie silvestre C. reticulatum, lo que los hace buenos candidatos para caracterizar este cultivo. Este estudio sirvió como base para desarrollar otro sistema de marcadores moleculares más eficiente en esta especie.

Background: Plants of the genus Inula are perennial herbs of the family Asteraceae. This genus includes more than 100 species, widely distributed throughout Europe, Africa and Asia including India. Many of them are indicated in traditional medicine, e.g., in Ayurveda. This review explores chemical constituents, medicinal uses and pharmacological actions of Inula species. Methods: Major databases and research and review articles retrieved through Scopus, Web of Science, and Medline were consulted to obtain information on the pharmacological activities of the genus Inula published from 1994 to 2017. Results: Inula species are used either alone or as an important ingredient of various formulations to cure dysfunctions of the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, urinary system, central nervous system and digestive system, and for the treatment of asthma, diabetes, cancers, skin disorders, hepatic disease, fungal and bacterial infections. A range of phytochemicals including alkaloids, essential and volatile oils, flavonoids, terpenes, and lactones has been isolated from herbs of the genus Inula, which might possibly explain traditional uses of these plants. Conclusion: The present review is focused on chemical constituents, medicinal uses and pharmacological actions of Inula species and provides valuable insight into its medicinal potential.

We investigated the impact of dipteran predators on eggs in foam nests of the Common Hour-glass Tree Frog Polypedates cruciger Blyth, 1852 (Anura: Rhacophoridae) in central Sri Lanka.  Foam nests (n=24) of P. cruciger were examined at their natural breeding habitats and infected (n=8) and uninfected spawns (n=16) were identified.  Emerging tadpoles were collected in a water container hung under each spawn and the average number of tadpoles (N) hatched from infected spawns (N=0) was compared with that of uninfected spawns (N=354 ± 67).  Three severely infected spawns were brought to the laboratory and the fly larvae were reared until they metamorphosed to adults.  Morphological and molecular identification of the flies confirmed them as belonging to Caiusa testacea Senior-White, 1923 of the family Calliphoridae.  The infected spawns were completely destroyed and an estimated average of 400 P. cruciger eggs per spawn were lost.  The results revealed a high impact of Caiusa testacea on egg and embryo mortality of P. cruciger.
