In the construction field, the Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology is becoming increasingly predominant and the standardization of its use is now an essential operation. This method has become widespread in recent years, thanks to the advantages provided in the framework of project management and interoperability. Hoping for its complete dissemination, it is unthinkable to use it only for new construction interventions. Many are experiencing what happens with the so-called Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM); that is, how BIM interfaces with Architectural Heritage or simply with historical buildings. This article aims to deal with the principles and working methodologies behind BIM/HBIM and modeling. The aim is to outline the themes on which to base a new approach to the instrument. In this way, it can be adapted to the needs and characteristics of each type of building. Going into the detail of standards, the text also contains a first study regarding the classification of moldable elements. This proposal is based on current regulations and it can provide flexible, expandable, and unambiguous language. Therefore, the content of the article focuses on a revision of the thinking underlying the process, also providing a more practical track on communication and interoperability.

At the time of changing economic circumstances, adaptation and conversion of historic structures is an increasingly popular approach. Some historical buildings are very suitable for the revitalization into the modern hotels. The paper analyzes the relationship of the hotel, the city and its architectural heritage, as well as some of the factors that led to the eruption of alternative models of hotels, shown through a series of successful solutions. Many challenges of hotel design in historic buildings are listed and corresponding solutions are offered. Some methodological directions are indicated, and certain guidelines and principles for further activities in this field are formulated. In conclusion their applicability in practice is discussed, and certain disadvantages and limitations are listed.

The beginning of restoration works on a scientific base in Turkey dates back on 1933 when a specific committee for the protection of monuments (Anıtları Koruma Komisyonu) was officially appointed by the Ministry of Education. The preliminary working phase, carried on under the direction of this committee, was soon distinguished by the clear attempt to visualize the results in order to cast the monuments as national icons. The present paper's aim is to discuss this process of visualization focusing on the case study of a series of works realized in Edime from 1933 to 1944. Apart from the historical value of monuments included in the protection program, the study explores the ideological side of these works stressing their value as a pioneering enterprise of a modem nation that celebrated its emerging culture in the protection and preservation of monuments as a sign of progress and civilization. Edirne's restoration works in fact arouse a great deal of interest in the national press, becoming the best show-case for the effort of the Ministry. By this point of view the study focuses on the key-role played by the Turkish Historical Society in the construction of a visual narrative in the attempt to disseminate the result of these works. In particular the efforts of the Turkish Historical Society in advertising the scheduled interventions found their outlet in the editing of a set of postcards displaying Edirne's historical buildings. The result is a series of powerful images in which a number of buildings are re-casted as the first cultural-historical assets of the Turkish nation. The construction of this visual material was set according to a powerful aesthetic format, clear and instantly recognizable, in order to assure an immediate public reception of the historical heritage of the country. The collection of these images stands as a prime contribution in the construction of the national identity of the country thanks to the production of a collective visual heritage, that, on the ground of an effective popular aesthetics, was able to feature the idea of nation as a landscape of monuments.

This project's principal intention is developing a structure from a motion thematic applied to an architecture field in both medium and large scale, in order to generate a cloud of points. These are obtained thanks to photographic footage, which can later be used during the H-BIM process. The matter of 3D digitalization is a very current issue for many countries including Cuba. The growth of such a technological application for tridimensional restitution of historical buildings is treated by giving special attention to those belonging to Havana's architectural and cultural heritage.

The chapter presents a reflection on the concept of transparency in digital modeling and visualization of Architectural Heritage. Moving from topics of transparency and from the experiences in using paradata in different fields to state model's source, the degree of reliability of virtual re-constructions, and to made the digital model testable by other professionals, transparency and paradata are studied and declined for a dedicated application to historical buildings. In fact paradata is useful for model's design, use, management, diffusion, archiving, and interoperability. This according to an aim of model's intellectual transparency, and scientific computing and visualization of historic buildings. Follows issues about: the relationship between physical and digital heritage, the design of the digital 3D model and the database, the communication of transparency through spatial visualizations and multiple windowed representations, the transparency as possible methodological workflow for scientific analysis.

Historical buildings are the most visible part of cultural heritage. They make up Latvia’s historical landscape that has been centuries in the making. In the vast majority of cases these buildings are included in the historical cultural heritage of Latvia. However, the practical mechanisms of their preservation (ownership preservation, maintenance, renewal opportunities) and, consequently, their economic potential, still have not yet been fully evaluated. Does cultural value interact with market value? What factors affect urban planning in the Historic Centre of Riga and its PZ – a UNESCO World Heritage site? Answers to these questions, as well as the main challenges in the preservation of values of Riga’s architectural heritage will be discussed in the paper. Istoriniai pastatai – matomiausia kultūrinio paveldo dalis. Jie išryškina šimtmečiais kurtą Latvijos istorinį kraštovaizdį. Dauguma tokių pastatų įrašyta į Latvijos istorinio kultūros paveldo sąrašus. Vis tik praktiniai jų apsaugos mechanizmai (nuosavybės apsauga, priežiūra, atnaujinimo galimybės), o kartu ir ekonominis potencialas dar nėra visapusiškai įvertinta. Ar yra kultūrinės vertės ir rinkos vertės tarpusavio sąveika? Kokie veiksniai turi įtakos Rygos istorinio centro urbanistiniam planavimui – ar tai, pavyzdžiui, buvimas UNESCO pasaulio paveldo sąraše? Bandoma atsakyti į šiuos klausimus, aptariami Rygos architektūrinio paveldo vertybių apsaugos srityje kylantys iššūkiai.

This paper concerns the rehabilitation of historical buildings located in seismic areas, and is organized in two parts. The first part considers some of the new trends in the field of research in preservation and rehabilitation. These are elaborated in the following five-point summary: 1) Maintenance of historical buildings as an efficient means of minimizing damage from an earthquake. 2) Reduction of consolidation. The present-day policy is that of limiting “strengthening work” intervention in favor of “small and timely repairs.” 3) In-depth knowledge as a necessary premise to plan a rehabilitation project. 4) Re-evaluation of traditional techniques by incorporating modern materials 5) Preservation of the function and character of monuments in their changing life (use) and new technological needs. The second part of the paper describes examples of rehabilitation undertaken in the aftermath of the 1980 Irpinia earthquake.

A Budapesti Műszaki és Gazdaságtudományi Egyetem Építészettörténeti és Műemléki Tanszékén a műemléki és történeti épületek felmérése évszázados múltra tekint vissza. Az oktatásban is rendkívül fontos szerepet betöltő felmérőtáborok hagyományát oktatóink, dr. Istvánfi Gyula és dr. Kalmár Miklós hosszú évtizedeken keresztül éltették tovább megszerettetve hallgatóikkal – így velünk is – a régi házak, szerkezetek megfigyelését, rajzolását és kutatását. Tanulmányunkban a Tanszék által 2017-ben a Pest megyei Ipolytölgyesen szervezett nyári felmérőtábor emlékét és tanulságait történeti és néprajzi kitekintéssel szeretnénk összefűzni. A tábor során felmért tíz portát főleg építészeti szempontból vizsgáltuk és dokumentáltuk, de ahogyan az minden épület tanulmányozása esetén fennáll, betekintést nyerhettünk a falu mindennapi életébe és értékeibe is.Surveying monuments and historical buildings at the Department of History of Architecture and Monument Preservation of Budapest University of Technology and Economics dates back to age-old traditions. The tradition of survey camps, that played an all-important educational role, had been kept alive for decades by our tutors Gyula Istvánfi and Miklós Kalmár, thus winning the affection of the students – and so ours – towards observing, drawing and studying historical buildings and structures. In our study, we wish to incorporate the memory and lessons of the 2017 survey camp organized by the Department in Ipolytölgyes, Pest county, with a historical and an ethnographical outlook. During the camp, we studied, surveyed and documented ten vernacular houses with their service buildings, mainly from an architectural point of view, but we could also inspect the everyday life and values of the village.

Resumo: A utilização de rochas ornamentais portuguesas nos países da CPLP (Comunidade do Países de Língua Oficial Portuguesa), desde o Séc. XVI é historicamente conhecida e encontra-se profusamente documentada. Por exemplo, consultando a base de dados do SIPA (Sistema de Informação para o Património Arquitectónico, disponível em http://www.monumentos.pt) encontramos quase 33.000 referências à utilização da “pedra” em monumentos. Infelizmente, na maior parte dos casos não se refere especificamente que pedra, ou pedras, foram utilizadas em determinado monumento, pelo que algo ainda haverá a fazer para completar esta enorme e muito importante base de dados. Concretamente e no que concerne ao Brasil, são referidos 163 monumentos e edifícios onde pedra de origem portuguesa foi utilizada. Partindo do exemplo concreto da cidade de Évora, neste curto ensaio apresentamos os principais tipos litológicos, de origem portuguesa, que podemos encontrar em edifícios e monumentos históricos no Brasil.Palavras Chave: rochas ornamentais portuguesas, lioz, mármore, monumentosAbstract: PORTUGUESE DIMENSION STONES AND BRAZILIAN MONUMENTS. The use of Portuguese Dimension Stones in the countries of the CPLP (Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries) since the 16th century is historically known and widely documented. For example, by consulting the SIPA database (Architectural Heritage Information System, available at http://www.monumentos.pt) we find almost 33,000 references to the use of "stone" in monuments. Unfortunately, in most cases it does not specifically refer to what stone or stones were used in a given monument, so there is still something to be done to complete this huge and very important database. Specifically, as far as Brazil is concerned, 163 monuments and buildings where Portuguese origin stone of was used are mentioned. As is well known, Italy's very consistent buildings stock has become the major field for real estate investments and for the related projects and actions. It is a heritage that is often barely known and extremely complex, whose management has until now been addressed in a rather casual and uninformed manner, with unsatisfactory and sometimes disastrous outcomes. The situation is worse in the case of buildings of particular historical, artistic and architectural value so frequent within the heritage of our country.<br> This paper shows the findings of an ongoing research which is aimed at structuring the cognitive process and assessing enhancement and re-functionalisation scenarios of our historical and architectural heritage through the use and integration of information systems such as BIM and the GIS. The work led to the development of a workflow able to integrate the contribution of the HBIM and GIS methodologies in the structuring and management of a wide range of digital data and information useful for its management. The research, focused on “La Gran Torre di Oristano, is aimed at creating the best conditions for an integrated and multidisciplinary strategy of requalification and refunctionalisation of historical and architectural heritage.
