This article focuses on the increased relevance and urgency to pay explicit attention to complexity-informed perspectives on real-world issues in Dutch higher professional education. Moreover, it describes lessons learned from experiments with so-called Embedded Complexity Workshops. These workshops, comprised of activities like network visualization, yield promising results and can serve as a starting point for further development.

This chapter describes the important role that the concept of ePortfolio plays in new pedagogical paradigms in The Netherlands. ePortfolio can be seen both as a consequence of and a stimulus for the movement towards student-centered, competence-based learning in Dutch higher education. The authors present lessons learned in ePortfolio implementation, derived from experience from the past five years in the Low Countries, both in local institutional projects and in large-scale national projects. They then describe the cases of their own universities, being Windesheim University for Professional Education and the University of Amsterdam. The chapter ends with conclusions and future developments in the field of ePortfolio in The Netherlands.

In this chapter, developments and issues in the Netherlands with regard to work-based learning (WBL) and its relevance for higher professional education (HPE) and lifelong learning (LLL) are discussed. While traditionally in LLL the emphasis was on formal and non-formal learning in organized settings (adult education), nowadays there is growing awareness of the importance of informal LLL in the workplace. Different and more intensive patterns of interaction between companies and HPE are being developed to improve the connection between learning in education and in the workplace. There are steps towards an effective pedagogy of WBL as employers and HPE strive for high-quality outcomes. As a final point, the authors discuss the recent developments with regard to accreditation of prior learning as a way to raise the qualification levels of the working population.

Is there a way to know how to deal with and to act when unexpected challenges press on? In this article, I will explore how to educate for learning new knowledge in value-based professions. Taking a starting point in the sociomaterial learning theories of Paavola and Hakkarainen (2005) I analyse the course descriptions in the professional pastor education in the Netherlands and in Norway. The findings show unexpected and various practices of learning new knowledge in the Dutch and the Norwegian pastor education. Within the implementation of the national strategy for improving financial competency and financial education in Russia, aimed at the broad masses of the population, any experience in promoting financial competency among young people, accumulated in the system of training bachelors of Economics, will be useful. The purpose of the article is to present the methodological and practical aspects of teaching the basics of financial calculations of future economists and the formation of computer modeling skills in the field of financial and economic activity. The reason for writing the article was the problem of interdisciplinary integration in the system of financial and economic education. The analysis of educational literature and curricula of the system of secondary and higher professional education, as well as the study and generalization of pedagogical experience showed weak integration of mathematical and economic disciplines with information technologies. The article also presents the problems associated with the calculations in the financial and economic activities with the use of computer modeling. The elements of the presented methods of teaching the basics of financial computing in conjunction with the modeling of financial problems on the computer can be useful for both school teachers and university teachers of mathematics and computer science.

AbstractAs a work of propaganda, graphics Austroseraphicum Coelum Paulus Pontius should create a new reality, make appearances. The main impression while seeing the graphics is the admiration for the power of Habsburgs, which interacts with the power of the Mother of God. She, in turn, refers the viewer to God, as well as Franciscans placed on the graphic, they become a symbol of the Church. This is a starting point for further interpretation of the drawing. By the presence of certain characters, allegories, symbols, we can see references to a particular political situation in the Netherlands - the war with the northern provinces of Spain. The message of the graphic is: the Spanish Habsburgs, commissioned by the mission of God, they are able to fight all of the enemies, especially Protestants, with the help of Immaculate and the Franciscans. The main aim of the graphic is to convince the viewer that this will happen and to create in his mind a vision of the new reality. But Spain was in the seventeenth century nothing but a shadow of former itself (in the time of Philip IV the general condition of Spain get worse). That was the reason why they wanted to hold the belief that the empire continues unwavering. The form of this work (graphics), also allowed to export them around the world, and the ambiguity of the symbolic system, its contents relate to different contexts, and as a result, the Habsburgs, not only Spanish, they could promote their strength everywhere. Therefore it was used very well as a single work of propaganda, as well as a part of a broader campaign

This chapter takes as its starting point the contemporary idea that the Netherlands is one of the least corrupt countries in the world; an idea that it dates back to the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. In this chapter, the authors explain how corruption was controlled in the Netherlands against the background of the rise and fall of the Dutch Republic, modern statebuilding and liberal politics. However, the Dutch case also presents some complexities: first, the decrease in some forms of corruption was due not to early democratization or bureaucratization, but was rather a side-effect of elite patronage-politics; second, although some early modern forms of corruption disappeared around this period, new forms have emerged in more recent times.
