Pignat, Caroline. Poetree. Illustrated by François Thisdale, Red Deer Press, 2018. Caroline Pignat is a two-time Governor General Award winner and it’s easy to see why when one looks at her latest beautiful book. Each page of Poetree is simply delightful with short simple poems complemented by François Thisdale’s excellent illustrations. The illustrations perfectly invoke the feeling of the poem whether it be the frosty cold of a silent winter’s morning or the pure warm delight of a warm summer's day. The short length of the poetry and the everyday-vocabulary chosen by Pignat makes this book accessible to many readers, even those working on their English skills or who are new to poetry. For educators and librarians, this book would be an excellent addition to a program celebrating poetry. In fact, the style of the short poems and illustrations focusing on daily life could be showcased in the reading of this book and then learners could work on creating their own illustrated poems in the style of Poetree. The combination of eye-catching illustrations with high contrast text will no doubt delight audiences of all ages if used in story times and the overall simplicity of the language would allow newer readers to still engage, making this an excellent addition to classrooms and libraries. The section below contains reports on bioarchaeological remains recovered in the excavations in Areas D and C in the Sanctuary of Poseidon at Kalaureia, Poros, between 2003 and 2005. The excavations were directed by the late Berit Wells within a research project named Physical Environment and Daily Life in the Sanctuary of Poseidon at Kalaureia (Poros). The main objective of the project was to study what changed and what remained constant over time in the everyday life and in both the built and physical environment in an important sanctuary of the ancient Greeks. The bioarchaeological remains, of a crucial importance for this type of study, were collected both by means of traditional archaeological excavation and by processing extensively collected soil samples. This text aims to providing the theoretical and archaeological background for the analyses that follow.

We used experience sampling to examine perceptions of empathy in the everyday lives of a group of 246 U.S. adults who were quota sampled to represent the population on key demographics. Participants reported an average of about nine opportunities to empathize per day; these experiences were positively associated with prosocial behavior, a relationship not found with trait measures. Although much of the literature focuses on the distress of strangers, in everyday life, people mostly empathize with very close others, and they empathize with positive emotions 3 times as frequently as with negative emotions. Although trait empathy was negatively associated only with well-being, empathy in daily life was generally associated with increased well-being. Theoretically distinct components of empathy—emotion sharing, perspective taking, and compassion—typically co-occur in everyday empathy experiences. Finally, empathy in everyday life was higher for women and the religious but not significantly lower for conservatives and the wealthy.

Este ensaio visual trata do mundo da vida cotidiana de camponeses agroextrativistas no Pará, especificamente no baixo Tocantins, região das ilhas do município de Mocajuba. Segue o método da etnografia sensorial, discute a relação entre corpo, ambiente e formas de aprendizagem técnica com a virtuosidade dos indicadores socioambientais e argumenta que tais técnicas não são transmitidas, mas ensinadas e aprendidas por meio de um complexo engajamento sensorial com o ambiente.Palavras-chave: Camponeses agroextrativistas. Turning to the history of the everyday life of an individual or society allows us to preserve historical memory, to identify the mechanisms that ensure the historical continuity and integrity of society at the present stage. An important role in the organization of the management of the regional educational space belonged to civil servant (the trustee, district inspectors, administrative corps of educational institutions), allocated from among the employees of the Ministry of the National Education. Based on historiographical and historical sources, using the methodological provisions of the theory of everyday life, the principles of objectivity, historicism and consistency, the article shows the role of the profession in the structure of the daily life of civil servant of the West Siberian Educational District. It is established that the professional activity was influenced by the scope of official duties established by departmental regulatory documentation, spatial and territorial features of the entrusted management sector, the socio-political situation that corrects professional duties, the established way of life and provides the opportunity to choose within the entrusted professional space. The social status and income level of a civil servant depended on the scope of control and its significance for the activities of the entire system. It was a compensation for the time and effort spent. The proposed approach to the analysis of the role of the professional factor in the daily life of civil servant of the West Siberian Educational District can be applied to other socio-professional groups in different territorial and temporal spaces. The article introduces the methodologies of the study of the everyday life of modern teenagers whiсh can simultaneously be used to traceevents occurring in real and virtual space: “Online and offline diary" and "15 minutes". The data of pilot studies showed that the teenager’s online performance is mainly presented in a form of communication in social networks. We have discovered that the on- and offline convergence of space for growth is inseparable from respondents themselves. Through the active use of social networks, a modern teenager is able to be present in different socialenvironments simultaneously. Constant checking news and posts in social networks is a new, peculiar to teenage daily ritual. The so-called "red zones", where a teenager consciously waives the possibility of "escape" into a parallel reality, are linked to significant events in everyday life, while a feeling of boredom brings to life the compensation through "getting about" in virtual space

This article investigates the influence of Soviet economic policy on the daily life of Siberian townspeople in the 1960s using a wide range of official and personal sources. In particular, it examines how the Soviet state provided the population with food, enacted price policy and currency reform, and implemented housing programs and consumer services. This article also employs popular memoirs to explore the involvement of the scientific revolution in the beginning of the formation of a socially oriented economy. It also provides a novel perspective on the changes that impacted the everyday lives of ordinary people during the period of Khrushchev’s “Thaw.”

Goose, Roy & McCluskey, Kerry. Sukaq and the Raven. Illustrated by Soyeon Kim. Inhabit Media, 2017. Inhabit Media is a quality publisher and Sukaq and the Raven matches their usual exemplary quality of story and imagery. The story is a traditional legend from Inuit storyteller Roy Goose illustrated using Kim’s beautiful three-dimensional dioramas. This wondrous illustration style previously earned Kim the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Illustrator’s Award for her work You Are Stardust and it is easy to see how her artwork is award-winning. The depth created by the illustrations perfectly complements the story which follows Sukaq as he falls into his favourite bedtime story—how the raven created the world. As with many of Inhabit Media’s works, this story is distinctly Inuit while remaining understandable to everyone which makes it extremely useful in classrooms and libraries. The audience for this piece could range from pre-reading children to later elementary students as the full-page illustrations provide enough interest to any reader. Most young readers will need a reading buddy due to the amount of text and the complexity of some words. Artistically-minded readers may be intrigued by the three-dimensional diorama illustration style though educators or librarians may find this story to be a great introduction to a craft program involving dioramas. Parents may also find this story works well as a bedtime story due to the flow and lack of interrupting onomatopoeias (boom, beep, etc.). I highly recommend this book given how the illustrations and story combine to create a book that is pleasing to readers of many ages. Nesta comunicação procuramos mostrar a propriedade das idéias de Martin Buber, na obra Eu e Tu (2001), para se pensar as inter-relações na escola. Em termos antropológicos, no cotidiano escolar se configuram, simultaneamente, cultura organizacional e a cultura de grupos, segundo Edgar Morin (1984) e Michel Maffesoli (1998). Buscamos na “filosofia do encontro” uma reflexão sobre as relações inter-subjetivas produzidas pelos sujeitos no cotidiano escolar. São relações que efetivam a comunicação, definida por Buber como um encontro, no qual se dá a complementaridade e reciprocidade das ações entre o Eu-Tu, o dialógico, em detrimento à experiência de contato proporcionada no Eu-Isso, o monológico. A questão a ser iluminada diz respeito ao fato de que, por meio da “filosofia do encontro”, talvez possamos encontrar suportes teóricos consistentes para repensarmos as relações produzidas pelos sujeitos no âmbito escolar, o que evidencia o caráter “ontológico” de uma questão crucial na escola: ensino-aprendizagem. Abstract: This paper will attempt to point out relevance of the ideas of Martin Buber, in the work “I and Thou” (2001), to think the interrelations in school. In anthropological terms, in the school daily life both organizational culture and the culture of groups are established, according Edgar Morin (1984) and Michel Maffesoli (1998). We searched on the “Philosophy of the Meeting" a reflection on the inter-subjective relations produced by the subjects in the everyday life school. They are relations that implement the communication, defined by Buber as an encounter, which gave the complementarity and reciprocity of actions between the “I-Thou”, the dialogical, to the detriment of the experience of contact provided in the “I-That”, the monological. The issue to be enlightened relates to the fact that, through the "philosophy of the meeting," perhaps we can find consistent theoretical support in order to rethink relations produced by subjects within the school, which shows the "ontological" character of a crucial issue in school: teaching-learning.

ResumoEste trabalho pretende trazer para discussão as muitas provocações que as piadas carregam, formas divertidas de distração e de convívio entre amigos que ferem aqueles que são os motivos das piadas presentes nas salas de aula. Esse artigo visa analisar as piadas e apelidos presentes no cotidiano escolar em uma turma de 6º ano de uma escola pública de Campinas/SP. O estudo ocorreu por meio de observações das aulas de Educação Física, registradas em um Diário de Campo, e de encontros entre pesquisadora e alunos em Grupo Focal. Como expressões do bullying, as piadas machucam uns e alegram outros, numa relação perversa de poder social. Por meio do estudo, foi possível constatar não apenas o cotidiano de piadas que desqualificam e fazem sofrem, mas também a necessidade de tempos e espaços de diálogo na escola, em que os alunos possam falar e ouvir sobre questões relacionadas ao meio sociocultural que vivem. As piadas racistas se presentificam como formas de racismo contra pessoas que, pelas suas diferenças e pela estranheza que provocam, são desqualificadas. Laughingof the other: fascism racist jokes in daily life AbstractThis paper aims to bring into discussion the provocations made by jokes, fun ways of distraction and conviviality among friends that hurt those who are the motives of these jokes in classrooms. This article aims to analyze the jokes and nicknames in school everyday life in a class of 6th grade of a public school in Campinas / SP. The study was conducted through observations of Physical Education classes, recorded in a field diary, and meetings between researcher and students in Focus Groups. As bullying expressions, jokes hurt some and rejoice others in a perverse relationship of social power. Through the study, it was possible to see not only the everyday jokes that disqualify and make sufferings, but also the need for time and space for dialogue at school, where students can speak and hear about issues related to socio-cultural environment in which they live. Racist jokes present themselves as forms of racism against persons who, through their differences and the strangeness that cause, are disqualified.Keywords: Microfascism; Racism; Humor; Bullying; Violence.

When young people travel, they are often very dependent on public transport or parents. This study uses interviews with 16–19 years old teenagers in Stockholm to investigate their everyday experiences of public transit. The paper explores the experiences of buses and subways, here conceptualized as mobile places, to understand how they shape teenagers’ daily life. Understanding teenagers’ experiences of public transportation is part of understanding their everyday life, struggles, and possibilities to be mobile and participate in society. It is also a step towards ensuring that they find public transportation inclusive, safe, and worth traveling with today and in the future. Conceptually, the analysis focuses on how these mobile places are experienced as providing weights or reliefs to the everyday and if, how and when they may be places of interaction or retreat, addressing two needs in teenagers’ personal being and development. The study shows how various experiences of traveling with buses and subways shape how the teenagers feel, and how they make strategic choices in relation to this. A quite manifold, varying, and complex picture of public transportation arises, with stories of wellbeing, comfort, discomfort, and exclusion, and with sharp differences between girls and boys, and between buses and subways. These nuances are essential in planning and evaluation of transport systems in regard to how, when, where, or for whom public transport can be a part of social sustainability, as public policies often assume.
