Abstract: On the basis of data and facts put forth by UN, CEPAL, FLACSO Chile e INSTRAW about the political participation of women, this article analyzes the debates about the application and effects of electoral gender quotas in Latin America. The barriers to women’s political participation are taken into account, analyzing the definition, reach and arguments for and against gender quotas. The cases of Argentina and Costa Rica, the most successful in results, are analyzed. While Mexico shows the increased impact of quotas, Peru makes evident the influence of the strong presidential tradition. Brazil is a paradigmatic case, representing the failure of gender quotes. In conclusion, save for Argentina, other democracies have only accelerated the process of women’s inclusion in election processes, but without results compatible with expectations. Latin American women, with out without quotas, are underrepresented in the spaces of political participation.Key words: feminine political participation, electoral gender quotas, mechanisms of political representation.

Political parties are considered gatekeepers for women’s access to political positions, as they play an important role in institutionalizing women’s inclusion in politics. Ensuring that political parties in Sudan play an active role in the advancement of gender equality and the enhancement of women’s political participation is particularly important as Sudan prepares for its transition to democracy. This Report examines political parties’ internal policies and structures and their impact on women’s access to positions of power and decision-making at all levels, starting from within the political parties themselves. By scrutinizing parties’ constitutions, manifestos and various policy documents, the report highlights how women participate in political parties and the extent to which political parties support gender equality.

South Africa has made considerable progress since 1994 in institutionalising and consolidating the quality of its democracy. However, serious and persistent governance and socio-economic related problems have angered and frustrated the people and motivated increased protest action through both conventional and less conventional channels. The opportunity for citizens to participate in the political process is essential for a healthy democracy, therefore it is important that appropriate procedures and mechanisms are in place to facilitate this participation. Using quality of democracy methodology, the paper addresses several important questions, namely: how developed are the opportunities for conventional participation in South Arica, and to what extent are these taken up? and, what non-conventional forms of participation exist and what is government’s response? In addressing these questions, this paper explores the link between active citizenship and political participation over the last 25 years with a view to ascertaining the quality of South Africa’s political participation.

Women played a crucial role in the Bahraini political sphere over the past decades—through both formal and informal avenues of political activism. They were remarkably successful in shaping the country's political arena as they participated in the nationalist struggle against the British occupation, and in the innumerable subsequent calls for social and political reforms. Despite the regression of women's presence in the political sphere during the 1980s with the rise of Islamism—exacerbated by the political and social stagnation throughout the region—Bahraini women returned to the spotlight in the 1990s and continued to play a major role in the political sphere until the present time. Marwa Shalaby and Ariana Marnicio explain the paradox of women's political empowerment in Bahrain, with a special focus on recent developments post–Arab Spring.

ABSTRACT: Politics is an aspect and a system that is very important in the lives of citizens. All citizens including Christians cannot shy away from politics, because of politics produce various public policies. Thus Christians are supposed to take part in political life, not only in the electoral arena, but also in other areas. In the event the election, churches should not be nae. Churches must wisely give political enlightenment to their congregations, instead of the other way, lead the congregation to elect candidates of certain leaders. Thus the "political letter" issued by PGPI during the 2014 Presidential Election should be criticized as nae, since the content dictated the churches under PGPI. In addition, issues brought up in the letter were entirely unfounded. It is no surprise that PGPI Chairman, Rev. Dr. Jacob Nahuway, MA, received much criticism and scorn. KEYWORDS: politics, political participation, power, nation, country, religion.

She begins with foundational works, lingering controversies, and those explicitly focused on the question of the link between citizen opinion and public policies. The chapter also covers the varied components of the political system and how each serves as a mechanism for policymaking and democracy, including citizenship and political participation, institutions of governance, and elected and appointed officials. She concludes with critiques, future questions, and a call to utilize the great variation of local governments to further our knowledge about the manifestation of democracy and governance.

Any reader of my first published research on the political participation of Lebanese women can easily detect my vehement opposition to the principle of gender quota and its implementation in Lebanon. As a newcomer to research on women’s political empowerment, I lacked in-depth knowledge of the intricacies of the obstacles that faced, and continue to face, Lebanese women who have political aspirations.

Abstract Gender equality and women’s empowerment is taken as an important precondition and driving force for the achievement of all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Despite its highly developed economy and democratic governance system, Japan’s record of gender equality, in particular, women’s political and economic leadership, has stalled for a number of years. Even after the promulgation of laws for promoting economic and political participation and leadership of women, namely, the Act on Promotion of Women’s Participation and Advancement in the Workplace (2015) and the Act on Promotion of Gender Equality in the Political Field (2018), Japan’s global ranking on gender equality was lowered further by a widening of the political gender gap and remaining dearth of female managers. This study analyses the effectiveness of the legal frameworks aimed at improving gender equality, through assessing their regulatory design, compliance, and implementation. It also highlights how gender norms underlining the international human rights law and international development agenda have affected the development and implementation of those legal frameworks. The paper concludes that the laws aimed to promote women’s leadership in the economic and political spheres have not fully performed to achieve intended goals because of their weak enforcement mechanism, the lack of strong political will as well as insufficient awareness raising and advocacy to bring about transformative changes of gendered practices embedded in social context and practice. The partnerships among global and local stakeholders including international organisations, governments, business, media, civil society, and people with diverse backgrounds are essential to provide the necessary momentum to drive the laws to work effectively on the ground, through transnational and local advocacy. Japanese society is standing at a critical juncture to advance equal voice in economic and political decision making, which is a core of democratic governance and sustainable development based on the principle of leaving no one behind.
