This paper presents the results of scientific research aimed at studying processes of obtaining activated carbon from wood charcoal. We presented methods for determining the structure parameters and specific surface of carbonic adsorbents. Scientific research results allow concluding that wood charcoal is a cheap and effective material for the synthesis of activated charcoal.

Peat water can cause diseases such as cholera, hepatitis, dysentery, skin and eye diseases, and digestive diseases. Peat water is source water that is used daily needed by society in Segomeng. Mangrove wood is a material that can be used in the process of water purification because it can be used as activated charcoal which is a carbon compound, which is produced from a material that contains carbon. The research purpose is to know whether activated carbon of mangrove wood charcoal can be a medium of peat water filtering into clean water. This research type is the experiment and the design of this research uses Complete Random Design with some treatment which is arranged randomly for all experimental units. The different treatments are given, among others, using slow sand filtration and clay soil as a coagulant, using a slow sand filter with activated charcoal added mangrove wood with a thickness of 10 cm, and with a thickness of 15 cm. The results showed filtration with the addition of activated charcoal from mangrove wood with a thickness of 15 cm in getting the best results, can increase the pH value and is expected to improve the water quality of the acidic, odor-free, reducing taste, and the rapid filtration process that is 10 minutes. The conclusion is that the addition of activated carbon from mangrove wood charcoal is quite effective in the process of peat water filtration and can improve physical quality of water. The Suggestion is,should be measured of physical, chemical and biological character of peat water before and after filtration process.and also measurement of absorption of activated carbon of charcoal of mangrove wood before used as absorbent in filtration process

Six catalysts containing 5 and 6.1 wt. % Pt were prepared by impregnation of activated carbon (Atlas AET 300) with H2PtCl6 from aqueous solutions and subsequent calcination and reduction with hydrogen at 100, 200, and 300 °C. The specific surface area was determined for the catalysts, saturated supports and the untreated support. The adsorption isotherms of n-pentane at 0 °C were measured for the support, saturated support and catalyst (100 °C), and the experimental data were correlated by the BET, Langmuir, and Dubinin equations; the pore radii distribution was also calculated for them. The activities of the catalysts were evaluated by measuring the initial reaction rates of hydrogenation of 1-octene and nitrobenzene.

<p align="justify">Este trabalho teve como objetivo o estudo de filtros de carvão ativado impregnado com zinco para remoção do protozoário parasita Giardia. Para a impregnação dos íons metálicos na superfície do carvão ativado foi utilizado o método de impregnação por excesso de solvente, para a caracterização textural do material produzido foram analisados os parâmetros: área superficial específica BET, área de microporos (método t), volume e diâmetro de microporos (método HK). A caracterização estrutural foi feita através de medidas de Difração de Raios-X (DRX). Os filtros de carvão ativado impregnado com zinco foram testados com água sintética (água deionizada contaminadas com cistos de Giardia, em uma concentração na ordem de 105 cistos/L). Os resultados desse trabalho mostraram que filtros de carvão ativado impregnados com zinco atingiram uma remoção de aproximadamente 100%, trazendo resultados promissores na remoção do protozoário parasita Giardia.</p><p align="justify">Abstract</p><p align="justify">This work aimed to study the activated carbon filters impregnated with zinc for removal of protozoan parasite Giardia. For impregnation of the metal ions on the surface of activated charcoal was used the method of impregnation by excess of solvent, for textural characterization of the materials produced were analyzed parameters: BET specific surface area, area of micropores (method t), diameter and volume micropores (HK method). Structural characterization was made through measurements of X-ray diffraction (XRD). The activated carbon filters impregnated with zinc were tested with synthetic water (water contaminated with Giardia cysts, with a concentration on the order of 105 cysts / L). The results of this study showed that activated carbon filters impregnated with zinc reached a removal of approximately 100%, bringing promising results in the removal of the protozoan parasite Giardia.</p>

In this study, the hydrothermal method was used to synthesize MIL-101(Cr), and activated carbon (AC) with different content was incorporated in to MIL-101(Cr), thereby obtaining AC-MIL-101(Cr) composite material with a huge specific surface area. The physical properties of MIL-101(Cr) and AC-MIL-101(Cr) were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), nitrogen adsorption and desorption and specific surface area testing, and ethanol vapor adsorption performance testing. The results show that with the increase of activated carbon content, the thermal stability of AC-MIL-101(Cr) is improved. Compared with the pure sample, the BET specific surface area and pore volume of AC-MIL-101(Cr) have increased; In the relative pressure range of 0–0.4, the saturated adsorption capacity of AC-MIL-101(Cr) to ethanol vapor decreases slightly. It is lower than MIL-101(Cr), but its adsorption rate is improved. Therefore, AC-MIL-101(Cr)/ethanol vapor has a good application prospect in adsorption refrigeration systems. The exploration of AC-MIL-101(Cr) composite materials in this paper provides a reference for the future application of carbon-based/MOFS composite adsorbent/ethanol vapor working fluid in adsorption refrigeration.

Microporous carbons prepared from commercial activated carbon WG12 by KOH and/or ZnCl2 treatment were examined as adsorbents for CO2 capture. The micropore volume and specific surface area of the resulting carbons varied from 0.52 cm3/g (1374 m2/g) to 0.70 cm3/g (1800 m2/g), respectively. The obtained microporous carbon materials showed high CO2 adsorption capacities at 40 bar pressure reaching 16.4 mmol/g.

In this study, aspen wood sawdust was used as the raw material, and Fe(NO3)3 and CO2 were used as activators. Activated carbon powder (ACP) was produced by the one-step physicochemical activation method in an open vacuum tube furnace. The effects of different mass ratios of Fe(NO3)3 and aspen wood sawdust on the pore structure of ACP were examined under single-variable experimental conditions. The mass ratio was 0–0.4. The detailed characteristics of ACP were examined by nitrogen adsorption, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The adsorption capacity of ACP was established by simulating volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using ethyl acetate. The results showed that ACP has a good nanostructure with a large pore volume, specific surface area, and surface functional groups. The pore volume and specific surface area of Fe-AC-0.3 were 0.26 cm3/g and 455.36 m2/g, respectively. The activator played an important role in the formation of the pore structure and morphology of ACP. When the mass ratio was 0–0.3, the porosity increased linearly, but when it was higher than 0.3, the porosity decreased. For example, the pore volume and specific surface area of Fe-AC-0.4 reached 0.24 cm3/g and 430.87 m2/g, respectively. ACP presented good VOC adsorption performance. The Fe-AC-0.3 sample, which contained the most micropore structures, presented the best adsorption capacity for ethyl acetate at 712.58 mg/g. Under the action of the specific reaction products nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and oxygen, the surface of modified ACP samples showed different rich C/O/N surface functional groups, including C-H, C=C, C=O, C-O-C, and C-N.

AbstractThis review of how dolphins are portrayed in popular media (including literature, film, television, and music) reveals four themes that may influence public acceptance of current scientific research into dolphin cognition. These themes are: (a) dolphin as peer to humans, of equal intelligence or at least capable of communicating with or helping humans; (b) the dolphin as the representation of a romantic notion of ideal freedom in nature, embodying principles of peace, harmony or love; (c) the dolphin as a naïve, innocent being that is subordinate and in need of human protection; and (d) the dolphin as superior to humans, potentially affiliating with a higher power or intelligence. This review revealed that the use of dolphins in humor reinforced or lampooned the four identified themes, indicating a common acceptance of these themes. The paper concludes with a discussion of the importance of considering popular narratives in the presentation of scientific research results.
