The article explores the city holiday Amur Tiger Day in Vladivostok, which originated as a civic initiative, and later became an official event. The history of the holiday invention and the socio-cultural context of the holiday idea formation are considered, the changes in the structure and the meaning of this holiday over time are analyzed. The hypothesis is formulated that a civil initiative, representing a type of social action, can provide the creation of meanings, their preservation in a group and their transfer to newcomers only if certain strict limits or “rituals” are observed. The conducted empirical research has shown that a deviation from the established ritual results not only distorts the original idea, but also produces a more formal attitude of participants to the event. It can also become a way to solve “external” problems that are completely unrelated to the event. The obtained data make possible to conclude that there is some discrepancy between the initial aim of the holiday to form a new way of life and its nowadays perception as a matter for recreation and entertainment. The city holiday as a social action is now deritualized and this influences the citizens’ perception of the holiday and their involvement in the action.

The city state was the most characteristic expression of the Hellenic way of life; and it is appropriate that the most Philhellenic of Roman emperors should have been distinguished as a founder of cities and an encourager of civic institutions. We are ill informed about the constitution and history of most of his foundations, but concerning one, which was in Egypt, a country whose soil preserves so perfectly the antiquities which it covers, we have a considerable amount of evidence. Antinoopolis is thus of interest not only to the historian of Roman and Byzantine Egypt, but also for the light it may throw on Hadrian's aims and ideals as a founder of cities.

Inserido no campo de história da educação este artigo tem por objetivo analisar como foi constituído o famoso uniforme das normalistas da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Nesse sentido, abordamos questões relacionadas a história do Curso Normal e de seus distintivos sociais. Tendo os anos 1900 a 1910 como recorte temporal, buscamos contribuir para o campo no sentido conhecer melhor as bases da formação de professores primários na capital do Brasil. Nossa metodologia foi pautada no trabalho com fontes documentais, com ênfase na legislação escolar e na pesquisa empírica realizada nos acervos do Instituto de Educação Carmela Dutra e do Instituto Superior de Educação do Rio de Janeiro.Inserted in the field of history of education this article has as objective to analyze how the famous uniform of the normalists of the City of Rio de Janeiro was constituted. In this sense, we address issues related to the history of the Normal Course and its social distinctives. Since the years 1900 to 1910 as a temporal cut, we seek to contribute to the field in order to better understand the bases of the formation of primary teachers in the Brazilian capital. Our methodology was based on work with documentary sources, with emphasis on school legislation and empirical research carried out in the collections of the Carmela Dutra Institute of Education and the Higher Institute of Education of Rio de Janeiro.

Historians have long been studying in detail the story of I.V. Stalin visiting V.I. Lenin in Razliv. The main subject of their interest is whether this event took place in reality. Most of modern authors agree that it did not. This article does not dispute this verdict, because it is not about the event itself, but about the history of the mythologeme’s origin and the forms of its representation in the culture of the Stalin era.Researchers have not ye raised the question of why this story was introduced by Stalin into the updated version of his own official biography only thirty years after the events described in it. Meanwhile, appealing to it makes it possible not only to comprehend the reasons and goals of mythologizing individual episodes of the leader’s biography at the culmination stage of building his cult, but also to study the methods and forms of using cultural tools to achieve such goals.The article focuses mainly on visual representations of the mythological story. However, it was important not only to analyze and classify the new unstudied iconographic schemes that had never been studied by anyone before, but also to see them in a historical and cultural context. This approach made it possible to demonstrate how the Soviet representation strategies had been “working” under the conditions of the permanent expansion of the leader’s “life story”, as well as how the universally proclaimed slogan about the immense veneration of the teacher Lenin by his student Stalin had been adjusted over time. The fact that the story of “Stalin in Razliv” had remained for a long time beyond the attention of the leader himself and the ideologists of his cult (i.e. it had been considered unworthy of special efforts) and was included in his biography only seven years before his death, makes the analysis proposed in the article even more comprehensive.

This work begins with a question posed by Machiavelli: ‘In what mode a free state, if there is one, can be maintained in corrupt cities; or, if there is not, in what mode to order it.’ The book analyses the different solutions proposed by Machiavelli starting with the hypothesis of the ‘civil principality’, passing through both the definition of the republican ‘civil and free way of life’ and the examination of the history of the Florentine institutions, to two short writings from the years 1520–22. In the Discursus florentinarum rerum and the Minuta di provisione per la riforma dello Stato di Firenze, Machiavelli exposed publicly for the first time, his proposals to bring back republican freedom to Florence after the fall of the first republic and the Medici’s return. The main thesis put forward in this work is that Machiavelli, when he worked for the Medici, was always a committed republican, even if he believed that the city’s constitution needed to change after the fall of Soderini. In the Discursus and in the Minuta Machiavelli proposed a constitution in which the ‘humours’ were forced to mix together in order to generate a new form of ‘equality’ that according to Machiavelli is the main characteristic of a free, just, and stable republic. The aim was not to obtain equilibrium among the parts of the city leaving them unaltered, but to mix them.

The study of the national language is largely dependent on the study of the history of the people who speak the language. The people are the creators of their own culture and language as well as the creators of their own history. We study the history and culture of the people by learning the language. It is directly related to the study of the linguistic features of the dialects that exist in the language. As is known, everything that occurs in social life is reflected first and foremost in the vocabulary of the language. But over time, some words become consumed and gradually forgotten. Such words are mainly related to the material way of life of the people, but are also a rich source of information about the ethnos' history. This article discusses such words that are preserved in Uzbek dialects of Navoi region.

While Singapore is often considered an island city in the singular sense, the city-state actually consists of many islands, with the Singapore mainland being by far the largest. While most of these islands traditionally had thriving indigenous communities, all have since been displaced over time as the islands were developed to service Singapore's economic and metabolic needs as a rapidly urbanizing and developing nation. Some of the islands have also undergone considerable transformation (through reclamation) which has had significant impacts on the ecologies of the offshore islands. This simultaneously allowed for the ‘ruralization’ of mainland Singapore to provide more green space for nature conservation, recreation and leisure. This paper will provide a brief history of these transformations, drawing on specific examples which serve to illustrate how Singapore's offshore islands have been redeveloped over time to service the nation-state and in response to the changing needs of the urban core. In doing so, the paper examines how spaces on the urban periphery are deeply bound up with processes of ‘urbanization’, given their important role in processes of urban metabolism. In this way, the paper contributes to recent work in urban political ecology which has sought to trace processes of urbanization beyond the city and render visible the socio-environmental inequalities produced therein.

The paper deals with the research of philosophic way of life as an invariant of the Western culture. The author tries to revealthe answers to the questions: What is the influence of the time and place of life on a thinking person? Is it possible to put a question in such away? The first part of the paper gives methodological explanation for such putting the questions. Two conceptual strategies of thinking in the contemporary history of philosophy are mentioned – compartmentalismand biographical method. The latter one allows to understand philosophizing through research of maître à penser. Such approach makes possible cultural studies prospect for the life of a philosopher in the context of unique time and space. To designate the uniqueness of time and space, the category of chronotope (M. Bakhtin) is introduced in the paper. Chronotope sets condensed signs in a definite period at the result of which a unique image of a thinker is born in a definite cultural space. The Antiquity image of philosopher is Socrates. Not a biographical person but a mythologized image, Socrates entered the great time of culture and influenced on the Western civilization. Since Socrates, the philosophizing of Antiquity is considered as the spiritual exercises (P.Hadot), in which the spirit of publicity is combined with the inner dialoguewith oneself. Late Antiquity changed practical orientation ofphilosophy by contemplative one. Plotinus is considered as the example of such life style. Medieval culture transmits philosophizing from agora to the monastery, and since the 13thcentury, philosophizing came back to the city space again – tomedieval university. Two opposite images of medieval philosophers are considered, Thomas Aquinas and Siger de Brabant, who were didactic examples, full of moral content. Stories about Siger’s life were spread at once after his death as the warning from inheritance; later on hewas forgotten. Thomas Aquinas’ life is known as hagiography, didactic story free from details of private life.

The article deals with the problems of creativity and myth making in the Moscow texts by A. Dolmatov. The research is aimed at studying the authors ideas about his lyrical hero and the formation of the narrators self-portrait. A. Dolmatovs texts are dedicated to Moscow and the urban way of life, since it is the Moscow theme that is the sense-making component in the writers work. The article presents a brief history of rap poetry formation in Russia in the XXI century. The main features of problematics and poetics of A. Dolmatovs texts are analyzed. The task is to trace the evolution of the authors ideas on poetics and the meaning of rap as a genre of literature. The relationship of Dolmatovs lyrical hero with the city of roads, Moscow, defines the development of the authors work in alternative poetry of the 21 century.

Uniqueness of time and space sets originality of philosophical quest of a thinker. Analysis of one’s philosophizing through the prism of one’s life allows us to compare proved and practiced dimensions, and affirm a status of “maître à penser”, if these dimensions are coincided. The second part of the paper is focused on the time and space of the epoch of Modernity, where public space of the city as a place of activity for a philosopher is inseparably linked to critically directed an self-organized general public. Special attention is focused on life activity of Albert Schweitzer and Hannah Arendt. The author concludes that unlike Antiquity and Middle Ages where we were focused on the images of philosophers, Modernity deals with personalities of philosophers. Schweitzer as well as Arendt personally testify to their life and philosophical practice. The point is that definite life experience according to personal philosophy is purely important moral milestone, transforming the person to worthy exemplary.
