Survey of awareness of diabetes mellitus among the Arar population, Northern Border Region of Saudi Arabia

The pandemic Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) is an international apprehension, and there exists no effective treatment for it. Therefore, educating people about the necessary information regarding COVID-19 has become an essential tool to fight against COVID-19. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the awareness of COVID-19 among the general people of the Northern Border Region of Saudi Arabia (NBRSA). A self-administered questionnaire containing basic questions was designed and shared with the people after taking their consent. A total of 249 people participated in this study. The data was collected and analyzed. This study has been revealed that the general public of the NBRSA has a passable knowledge of the specific information about the COVID-19. However, the public is not satisfactorily aware of the complications associated with COVID-19. Accordingly, COVID-19 related education programs should be conducted regularly to increase the awareness of the general public of the NBRSA for COVID-19.

Risk of Developing Complications among Contact Lens Wearers in Northern Border Region, Saudi Arabia. A Retrospective Cohort Study.

The present study aims towards investigating the risk of developing complications upon usage of different types of contact lens as well as the role played by different variables related to contact lens usage (replacement time, regular follow-up, etc). This is a retrospective cohort study. The total study sample (n = 143) were recruited from Rafha General Hospital, Northern Border Region, Saudi Arabia. All their data were collected and analyzed using chi square test. A P-Value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Reusable contact lens wearers were noted to have significantly more complications than disposable contact lens wearers (P<0.05). The majority of the sample was reported to use contact lens for cosmetic (decorative) purpose than for therapeutic or optical indications (63%). Regular follow-up was significantly associated with decrease incidence of contact lens complications (P<0.01). Handling of reusable contact lenses must be done with care as complications are more likely to occur by using them than daily disposable contact lenses. Moreover, contact lens wearers must be advised about the importance of frequent replacement and regular follow-up as it showed significant decrease in complications. We can conclude from our finding that cosmetic usage of reusable contact lenses without proper handling and cleaning system is not advisable.

Background: Pharmacists' traditional position as drug dispensers has recently developed into a more active role in risk evaluation and management. Dispensing is often handled by pharmacy technicians in Saudi Arabia because pharmacists are so preoccupied with their managerial and administrative responsibilities. Pharmacists' meetings with patients are limited to medication dosage and frequency, as well as rare adverse effects and drug interactions. Methods: We conducted a quantitative questionnaire study in Saudi Arabia to look into the role of hospital pharmacists in patient counseling, the assessment of pharmacists' patient counseling opinions, and the possible determinants of personal consultation. Results: The number of patient inquiries was found to be very low, ranging from 5 to 20 per month. The amount of private pharmaceutical consultations was also poor. This finding showed that people trust pharmacists. Conclusion: Reorganizing the pharmacist's operations will help to enhance pharmaceutical consultations. This will help patients make better decisions about their medications and improve their quality of life.

Introduction: Northern border region of Saudi Arabia is one of the richest areas of traditional plants. This study was designed with an interest to work on the polysaccharide extracted from Astragalus spinosis leaves (PLAS) collected from rafha province. Methods: Polysaccharide was isolated by hot water extraction, followed by ethanol precipitation. The isolated crude polysaccharide contains 62.43% ±2.09% carbohydrate and 0.29 ± 0.07% protein. The physicochemical characteristics, such as chemical composition, humidity, foaming capacity, solubility as well as water and oil holding capacity were evaluated. The structural feature of polysaccharide was studied through Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Results: Polysaccharide extracted from Astragalus spinosis leaves showed good inhibitory lipase and antioxidant activities. It was observed that the total antioxidant capacity, the 1,1- diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and the 2,2 -azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ATBS) radical scavenging activities were high at 2.0 mg/ml (97 µmol eq tocopherol ± 1.4, 73% ± 2.1 and 93% ± 0.9 respectively). Conclusion: the crude polysaccharide extract demonstrated good emulsion stabilizing capacities, with various hydrophobic compounds. It could be a potential source of natural antioxidants and emulsifiers.
