Effect of nitrogen and bio-fertilizer on growth and productivity of hybrid rice (cv. PHB 71) was assessed during dry seasons of 2017 and 2018 at Research Farm of BCKV under new alluvial zone of West Bengal. The experiment was laid out in factorial randomized block design with 12 treatment combinations having 4 levels of N and 3 types of bio-fertilizer replicated thrice. Application at 180 kg N/ha produced tallest plants at 90 DAT with maximum LAI (60 DAT), DMA (90 DAT), tillers/hill (90 DAT) and CGR (30-60 & 60-90 DAT). The same N rate resulted in highest panicles/m2, panicle length, panicle weight, filled grains/panicle and 1000-grain weight. A decrease in N dose from 180 to 150 kg/ha caused reduction in all those yield components; however, the variation was non-significant except for number of panicles/m2. Maximum grain yield, straw yield and harvest index was also achieved with 180 kg N/ha accounting 120.1, 34.9 and 32.8% more than the values obtained with zero-N; however, it was statistically at par with the yields and HI obtained with 150 kg N/ha. The Azospirillum application increased all the growth parameters, yield components and yield of hybrid rice over other tested bio-fertilizers (Azospirillum > PSB > K mobilizer), accounting 5.9 and 8.8% more than the yields obtained with PSB and K mobilizer. The interaction of N and bio-fertilizer exerted significant effect on growth attributes but failed to record any significant variations in yield components and yield of hybrid rice. The maximum economic benefit was achieved with combined application of 180 kg N/ha and Azospirillum.

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of mulch (non-mulch and straw mulch) and different levels of nitrogen (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg ha-1) and potassium (0, 37.5, 75 and 112.5 kg ha-1) on the growth and yield of onion. Plants grown with straw mulch gave higher bulb yield (10.89 t ha-1) which showed 13.79% increase over non-mulch. Nitrogen increased the bulb yield significantly.The highest nitrogen level gave the highest bulb yield (12.13 t ha-1), which was 41.54% increase over control. Potassium increased bulb yield compared to control, but its different levels had identical results on yield. Nitrogen and mulch together produced significant variations. The Nitrogen at the highest level (120 kg ha-1) along with straw mulch gave the highest yield (13.31 t ha-1). Potassium together with mulch also exhibited significant variation on yield and yield components. Plants grown with the highest level of potassium (112.5 kg ha-1) along with straw mulch gave the highest bulb yield (11.58 t ha-1). Nitrogen and potassium as 120 kg N ha-1 × 75.0 kg K ha-1 gave the highest bulb yield (13.07 t ha-1). Three popular tomato varieties namely, Ratan, BARI tomato-3 and BARI tomato-6 were experimentally evaluated to identify the potential mulch on growth and yield, where the experiment consisted of four mulching treatments viz. water hyacinth, straw, am-ada leaf and banana leaf with a control (no mulch). The experiment was conducted under rainfed condition. In the experiment, mulching showed significant effect on growth, yield components and thus on the yield of tomato. Yield contributing characters were significantly higher when water hyacinth mulch was used. The variety Ratan produced the highest (53.74 t/ha) fruit yield, while BARI tomato-3 showed the lowest (48.89 t/ha) fruit yield. The combination of mulching and variety exhibited significant variation in some yield components and yield. The combination of water hyacinth and Ratan produced the maximum yield (62.16 t/ha) and thus the experiment revealed that water hyacinth and straw mulches have potentiality to increase the yield of tomato.
